The gods of metal are confused 0

There is something powerfully ironic about Tim Shaffer’s Brutal Legend, a game designed to be a love letter to heavy metal…a letter which would likely include a parcel containing a still-beating human heart. After all, it got published by the biggest third party developer and subsequently sued over by the second-biggest company over publishing rights. Maybe it’s that “selling out” is the anti-thesis of metal-ideologies (ideologies that  I guess include “don’t sell out” and “get fookin’ smash...

Command the power of rock! 0

Staring at a heavy metal album cover can muster up many thoughts: why is there a Black Panther shooting laser beams from its eyes? Why do I find that so cool? And what in God’s name does this have to do with the actual music? The answer to the latter is normally ‘nothing’, but the crazy, elaborate heavy metal album covers of old never failed to capture the imagination. They definitely inspired Tim Schafer in his teenage years, and now his team at Double Fine have finally brought it all to life ...

I throw up the horns and salute. 1

Brütal Legend is a great game, and I enjoyed it from start to finish. It's not perfect, but it has the quality you expect from a Double Fine game where it counts. Even if you're not a fan of heavy metal, there's lots to enjoy here.  Story: Everybody knows the basic plotline by now. Eddie Riggs is the greatest roadie in the world, but he's stuck working for the worst "metal" band in the world, Kabbage Boy, who completely dismiss the great...

Worth a play but not without its problems. 2

Let's get the important part out of the way right up front: Brutal Legend is a funny, funny game. I liked the story a lot and was glad to see how well Double Fine have captured the ridiculousness of Metal music and lyrics without making fun of them at any point.  While the fact that Brutal Legend is or at least includes elements of a real time strategy game has been made publicly available knowledge for many months now, the demo released on XBL seems almost to be deliberately misleading, contain...

    Funny, enjoyable, and polished 0

Not a masterpiece, and perhaps less than I expected of Tim Shafer, but nevertheless a genuinely enjoyable, sometimes very funny game. The graphics are very good and I haven't noticed any slowdown despite often dozens of units on the screen. The world is a good size, varied and interesting, with many amusing set pieces such as Mount Rockmore, which you can customise with giant busts of yourself and your allies. The voice acting is almost flawless, but the same lines are used often enough outside o...

Brutal Legend is clever, funny, and seriously badass. 4

Headbangers unite! Grab your battle axe and guitar and prepare for some serious, face melting rockin'!The very moment you insert Brutal Legend into your console, you'll notice that Brutal Legend is pretty clever in both its design and writing. After a humorous opening from Jack Black, we are presented with the menu, in the form of a vinyl record. Scrolling through the menu, was actually really enjoyable, as the presentation was so unique and great to look at. I think, this is the first time I've...

Eddie Riggs' [...] Isn't as Long as People Think it Will Be. 4

Let me start off by saying this.  Brutal Legend has one of the better RTS systems on console.  I'd rank it just behind EndWar and lightyears ahead of just about everything else.  However, that in and of itself isn't saying a whole lot.  The open world is standard fare for the genre: 4-5 different events repeated ad nauseam with little incentive to go do them or go exploring in the world.  This is mainly due to the sense of urgency the game's story is told with.    The story itself is pretty good...

Activision can't kill the metal. 1

If you've only seen trailers, official gameplay video or even played the demo of Brütal Legend you might think you know exactly how it plays, but as you experience the game it shows itself as a range of gameplay elements rolled into one. Combined with engaging characters voiced by celebrities of metal, excellent writing and a hard hitting soundtrack this combines into an excellent package, provided you like all the components. When some of the voice cast essentially play themselves, it's not har...

    Roadie Warrior 0

Brutal Legend is a deeply weird game. Half real time strategy, half open world exploration, and a third half hack and slash action game, you could argue that there's just too much going on for any one game to handle. Then there's the story: you play as Eddie Riggs, superstar roadie to a sell-out pseudo-metal band that would prefer singing about girlfriends over the traditionally important things, like sonically kicking ass. An accident happens, and Eddie is magically transported to the primordia...

Sort of a New Genre of Game 0

Apart from its hilarious plot and awesome soundtrack, Brutal Legend combines the fun simplicity of a hack n' slash with the strategy of a RTS, and to top it off it contains small doses of RPG here and there. Simply this is almost a new genre of game. Anyone trying to compare it to another game would fail because this isn't really the kind of game seen often.   Before the release of the game, people were expecting for the game to do one thing: kick ass, which it delivered in a pleasantly epic way...

Worth a rent, wouldn't recommend buying it. 0

Anything I would write here would pretty much be a copy of everything you've read about this game already. I will instead just share a few  misses this game makes.  The humor is great and I would say the story is amazing but at a crucial plot twist point, characters act vastly different just in order to progress to the next act. This took me out of the story a bit and soured the experience. The ending is a bit of a let down as well. Several hints of a back story for the main character are laid o...

    Decapitatioooooooooooooooon! 0

“Brütal Legend” is a really difficult game for me to review, on one hand I love all the characters, the setting and the humor. Yes this is actually one of the very few games that are legitimately funny, which is not something I experience very often. Games that try to be funny often try to hard or else the humor is pretty stupid and not funny at all like “Death Spank”. But “Brutal Legend” just gets it right on that account. The dialogue is well written and delivered by a talented cast consisting...

    Brutal Legend 0

It's a bit unfortunate, because Brutal Legend could have been a really awesome game, but thanks to its reliance on strategy gameplay that no one was really asking for, it's merely a pretty good one. I haven't really played Tim Schafer's older games, but from looking at them and having played Psychonauts, it's pretty clear his strength is in creating unique and interesting settings to go with good stories, and that's the best part of Legend, too. Jack Black plays Eddie Riggs, a roadie w...

Brutal legend (Heavy metal + RTS.........why not?) 0

Have you ever played a game that where two genres’ at the same time? Brutal legend does that. It starts of as a hack’n’slash-game but then evolves into a RTS (and remember “It’s a RTS made for a consol so it’s not like Halo wars”) and it’s combined with an openworld.(Well) in Brutal legend you play as Eddie Riggs who’s the best roadie in the world (at least that’s what people say in the game) but all the bands he wants to be roadie for played in(not the 70’s but……) the early 70’s .Some of the t...

I wanted to love Brutal Legend, even before it was released. I fought with myself, trying be converted by the game, and although there are many part I do indeed love. Ultimately the game here is a failure. Tim Schafer is a genius, and a personal hero of mine. A long storied career including true classics, Monkey Island, Full Throttle, and Grim Fandango. Retuned to the scene after a long absence in 2004 with the incredible Psychonauts. With Brutal Legend we see him team with actor Jake Black ...

O but a man's reach should exceed his grasp... 1

I really wanted to like this game.  Actually, liking it isn't the hard part.  Brutal Legend is an amazingly easy game to love; the setting, the music, the writing are all fantastic.  Unfortunately, it's not a particularly easy game to like to play.  As a hack-and-slash, it compares unfavorably to less conspicuous games like Mini Ninjas.  As a Real-Time Strategy game, it quite simply does not work.  For every genre it attempts, one can easily name five other games that have done it better.  This ...

Great if you can accept that this is not an action game! 0

I don't write user reviews, but the pitiful score given by this game's reviewer just forced me to post this.  Simpley put, the review is flat out wrong.  The controls and gameplay style are perfectly suited for the controller.  The RTS combat is very action heavy, but it is still RTS combat, and if you cannot accept that, then this game is not for you.  However, if that sounds intriguing in the slightest bit, this is one of the best video game experiences you'll ever have.  The story-telling is ...

Compelling, but spread a touch too thin. 0

Aside from a list of memorable titles logged away somewhere in the back of my mind, I don’t have any sort of connection to Tim Schafer.  The attention he’s received in the past for being one of the few minds in game development to successfully incorporate humor into the medium is definitely something I recognize him for, but despite owning a copy of Psychonauts, I have never once played one of his games.     In a way I had no expectations going into Brutal Legend, and in another I’d caugh...

Brutal Legend is fun for a while but... 0

Brutal Legend is incredibly repetitive. When playing the game for the first time, I assumed it would be pretty repetitive but it seemed like the game struggled to move forward. The hack n' slash aspect of the game is pretty decent overall, but the RTS aspect lacks in depth. While an RTS isn't usually too good on the console, I felt that Brutal Legend could have made more of an effort to refine the RTS part of the game. It can be easily completed in around 3-4 hours, and the story is not all that...

Brtual Legend Review -- All Metal, No Glam! 0

Brutal Legend Review BRUTAL LEGEND REVIEW XBOX 360, PS3 There are not a lot of times when you can say there’s no good comparison to a game. If media ages, then gaming is probably in its teens, or at least coming up to it, and there’s been sufficient enough time to feel out most genres in gaming. Brutal Legend isn’t a new genre, per se, but it’s highly original in its own right. Following Psychonauts and Grim Fandango is no easy task, and Tim Schafer may not exceed expectations, but he does ...

i wish they spent as much time working on the gameplay as they did on the talent. I had no problem beating this game in 3 days. I don't have all of the achievements but it's not worth the repetition to get them. The art is amazing and voice talent is great but i got trapped in spots on the map where i couldn't move until i quit and restarted.  i don't like that when you drive off of the edge, you go all the way back to where you did your last mission, even if it is all the way across the map.      Tim Schaeffer is a highly-regarded game developer whose games haven't sold shit in years. Psychonauts was an excellent game that bombed unbelievably poorly. With Jack Black providing the lead voice and a wide array of cameos from legends of heavy metal (it's the most coherent Ozzy Osbourne has been in decades now), Brutal Legend hopes to give Schaeffer some commercial viability in addition to his usual quality. So, how does it do?Honestly, it's a very mixed bag. Brutal Legend Review 0

Brutal Legend is a tough game to classify into a genre. It’s an open world action game with elements o f real time strategy. It also doesn’t exactly implement these genres at the same time. You’ll drive around to missions, and the missions will generally either be a driving, hack and slash, or an RTS battle mission. Since there is less focus on each type of mission there isn’t a major amount of polish present, but the universe crafted for us by the legendary Tim Schafer and the folks at Double ...

I have to start this review letting the reader know something… I was completely biased towards this game from the moment I saw the metal setting, Jack Black, Tim Shafer, and panthers that shoot lasers out of their eyes. Now, since that’s out of the way… Brutal Legend is a story of Eddie Riggs, a roadie for a modern day “metal” band. After an accident at the start of the game, Eddie is transported into a mystical age, where metal influenced everything from clothing to architecture. Within the ...

Thankfully the overused song in the title does not exist in Brutal Legend. Double Fine delivered this heavy metal inspired action game in 2009. It might not be fair to categorize it as just an action game since there are lots of elements from RTS, racing and even brawler games. Eddie Riggs is our main protagonist who is voiced by and roughly modelled on Jack Black. Eddie is a roadie who gets involved with ancient Norse-like heavy metal mythology and hooks up with Ophelia, who is the story's love...

An awesome and unique metal inspired world is brought down by a seriously bizarre gameplay direction. What starts out as a fun action adventure game quickly turns into a monotonous and poorly executed real time strategy. I've never loved a 3/5 game as much as I have this one, it has some of the highest highs brought down by the lowest lows, and I really hope a sequel gets made one day. A lot has been made of Brutal Legend not being what it is supposed to be.  Many people thought it would be nothing but a hack and slash game.  It turns out that Brutal Legend is much more than that and has some RTS elements in it as well.   Brutal Legend is about Eddie Riggs, a roadie who travels back in time to kill demons, fall in love and rock.  The story is fairly simple but well written and the ending gives closure but is open enough for a sequel.  Tim Schaefer's writing is good up until th...

I need to admit, I have a huge man-crush on Tim Schafer. This probably came to a head for me with the release of "Psychonauts," easily the best action-adventure game on the xbox system and generally one of my favourite games of all time. Dishonesty May Be the Best Policy 0

People who've seen Brütal Legend in ads or are interested by the heavy metal aesthetic of the game may find themselves confused and perhaps alienated by what it actually is. The thing about Brütal Legend that's most likely to alienate players is the bait-and-switch that occurs as you're playing the game. The game starts out as an action-adventure game that admittedly feels rough around the edges, but what happens is that slowly but surely the game turns into something most players don't expect;...

Although the premise may sound paper-thin, the brilliant pairing of designer Tim Schafer and Jack Black really bring the story and characters to life.
