does anyone know if the coop in Bulletstorm will be similar to Gears where you can play the campaign with friends?  Or are the single player campaign and coop campaign separate things?

There is no Co-Op campaign. You get Horde Mode and a Competitive Mode, where you have to out-score your opponent.

Just found this out. Huge bummer for me personally, I find the characters and most of the dialogue I've seen to be juvenile and annoying as hell most of the time, but the one redeeming factor was that I thought I would be able to run through the campaign with 2-3 friends.
 
Now that I know that's not happening, I'm skipping it for now, got too many other games to play.

Co-op was my only interest.

There is a coop mode, but it's like the Echoes mode in that it's discrete chunks of the campaign that you're playing, not the whole campaign at one time.
