LOCATION
California is a large state on the West Coast of the United States, home to major cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco. California was also home to the Giant Bomb office.


The origin of the name "California" is up for debate, with the most common theory claiming it comes from a Spanish novel, Las sergas de Esplandián, first published in 1510. California was colonized by the Spanish Empire starting in the 16th century. It was admitted to the United States in 1850. Its capital is Sacramento, and its nickname "The Golden State" refers to the Gold Rush that brought almost 300,000 people to California. Since the 20th century, California is considered epicenter of the filmmaking business in Hollywood, Los Angeles, and technology sector in Silicon Valley. Apple, the world's largest company by market capitalization, has been based in California for its entire history. Its economy is the largest in the country by far, with a gross domestic product higher than the entire nation of Japan (Location).

Many video game companies call California home, including pioneers Atari (Company) and Activision (Company), along with Electronic Arts (Company), Blizzard, Naughty Dog, Infinity Ward (Company), Insomniac, Respawn, and The Behemoth (Company).

California is the most populous state in the United States and the third largest by territory. It has extremely diverse geography, climate, and wildlife, as well as population. The state is susceptible to earthquakes, wildfires, mudslides, and water scarcity caused by frequent droughts.

Giant Bomb founders Jeff Gerstmann (Person) and Ryan Davis (Person) were both born in northern California. The two worked for GameSpot.com, based out of San Francisco, before creating the site in 2008. Giant Bomb was originally based out of Sausalito, then moved to San Francisco in 2010.
