The fourth main Call of Duty game ditches the World War II setting of the past games to tell a story set in contemporary times, and backs it up with a breakthrough multiplayer mode.
Activision likes money. Call of Duty 4 sold gangbusters at full price for like 18 months after release, i imagine they're trying the same again and it's probably working.
They will keep it there until Black Ops comes out at least. By then, it should start to drop.
EDIT: Oh, I am referring solely on Steam by the way. There have been some stores over here in Australia that are preparing an earlier price drop as far as I remember. Should be similar over in the US as well.

It won't, because if it will cost lesss it will compete with Black Ops. Give it a few months after Black Ops comes out.
Yeah I think you're forgetting that Activision is the one making the game. Not Valve, or pretty much every other developer/publisher on Steam who prices things more or less appropriately as time goes on... but Activision.
Also, maybe just wait until Christmas? There's the slightest chance the price will take a bit of a dip then.

I remember getting the 360 version (new) for $30 (maybe $40, my memory is hazy) about four months after the game came out. I think it was the only time the game every went on sale. And it was at Circuit City.
@Mr_Skeleton: no. no business model sells the prequels at higher cost. It makes zero sense. They'll reduce the cost to allow people who haven't played the first games to buy them thus allowing a still steady income. Try thinking next time dude.
If you could get the money to a friend in US, they could buy it for the lesser price on Steam and gift it to you.
EDIT: Actually, I have a CD key I can't use. I have no idea if it is valid or not. If you can grab a copy of the game somehow, I hear you can use any valid CD key with any copy.
Dude, its activision we're talking about here, I'm sure that whenever someone brings up the prospect of a discount in any of the army of suits meetings there's this huge round of laughs and then someone says "now seriously".

It's up to the game publisher (not the system manufacturer) if it wants a successful game to be allowed to go Greatest Hits/Platinum Hits. Activision decided it's time to squeeze out the last money out of those 2 games by giving them more publicity.
MW2 is going to die off ultra quick after Black Ops comes out on the PC. As it stands, peak player count is only at about 60,000 so it can already be a pain trying to find a decent game with a good host. After Black Ops I wouldn't doubt that most players dump MW2 in favor of dedicated servers. If the player count drops to even 20,000 peak for MW2, it's going to be pointless for most people to even play it, effectively killing that game on the PC.

MW1 and WaW will still be going strong for a while, they have massive communities, dedicated servers, mods and a tonne of user made stuff. They'll will probably drop off slowly over time if Black Ops turns out to be a proper PC game, but they'll still have a strong community for a while. MW2 though as I said above is pretty much dead come Nov. 9th.

Call of Duty almost NEVER lowers in price except for the ultra rare sale. It's always been this way since #2.
Australian gamers: start buying cd keys that you can register on download services like Steam for much much less. http://www.cdkeysdirect.com/ I've been buying a few Aussie cd keys for a little while for lower than non-sale Steam prices, and I'm even American. $20 bucks for Cod4 and 40 for MW2. $16 for WaW. (edit: not sure if Activision has a downloader service outside of the Blizzard stuff. But the keys work online for multiplayer, which is what matters.)
