Purposely avoiding Nuketown 2025?

So, Black Ops 1 was a pleasant surprise for me. I hated World at War, was disappointed with MW2, so I swore off the franchise and didn't pay much attention to Blops. Months after release I came home for holidays and watched my sister play it and was pleasantly surprised. Map design, the dive to prone, the tomahawk...I picked it up and really enjoyed it.

That said, I could never, NEVER understand the community's love of Nuketown. It was upvoted every single time it came up, and when they added Nuketown 24/7 playlists I couldn't believe how popular they were. The map was tiny, a spawnkill fest, a spawn-and-shoot/throw your grenades-asap fest. Lord I hated it--even if I usually did very well on it because let's face it, the majority of CoD players are hilariously bad. Upside of such a huge community.

So, my question is this: Is anyone else, like me, planning to NOT pre-order the game because Nuketown 2025 is the pre-order bonus? Or, perhaps, pre-ordering but going to leave the code un-vouched for? I think it was rather nice of them to allow me to opt out of this god-forsaken map. Oh and here's a trailer they just put out for it. It looks like the same exact map.

I didn't mind Nuketown. I'd give the new one a shot.

#3 Posted by Fattony12000 (4367 posts) - 6 months, 15 days ago

It's no Lockout.

#4 Posted by EquitasInvictus (1586 posts) - 6 months, 15 days ago

I actually really appreciated how close-quarters Nuketown got with massive amounts of people. It was utter chaos, but a much more survivable, intense and less absolutely insane type of chaos than say, Shipment from the original Modern Warfare. I guess I love when shooters force fast-paced action like that.

#5 Posted by laserbolts (5116 posts) - 6 months, 15 days ago

Preorder it and give me the code. I wasnt a huge fan of nuketown but getting a chopper gunner on that map is so wrong but right.

#6 Posted by _Zombie_ (1287 posts) - 6 months, 15 days ago

The draw for most people was the 'spawn-and-shoot/throw your grenades-asap'. It's fucking chaotic as all hell, and you have to think on your feet if you want to stay alive for more than thirty seconds.

Now that map was chaotic. But goddamn, was it fun.

The only "close quarters map" I've liked since CoD4 was Dome in World at War. I just don't enjoy that shit on Call of Duty.

For me, CoD has always been about moderate-sized maps with separate and distinct battle zones within the map. None of those "close quarters" maps have had that. It's just a "spawn and hope someone isn't nearby" type of thing. There's little strategy to it.

Even stuff like Rocket Arena back in the Quake days had SOME strategy mixed in with its twitch gameplay.

#8 Posted by FluxWaveZ (17840 posts) - 6 months, 15 days ago

FFA Nuketown was the most fun I've ever had in multiplayer CoD.

#9 Posted by CatsAkimbo (429 posts) - 6 months, 15 days ago

COD is a game that revolves around leveling up, and nuketown was the fastest XP per minute of any map. There may be a few people who genuinely enjoy the map, but the rest us only voted it up to unlock that next gun faster.

And yeah, I totally agree with you that it's ridiculous that Treyarch actually thinks there's genuine love for the map. Being the most played map does not equal being the most adored map.

That said, I'm still gonna play it so I can level up quickly.

#10 Posted by SLUSHiNaToR (156 posts) - 6 months, 14 days ago

I agree. I never understood why so many people loved that map to death.. I thought it was alright, but there are much better maps out there.

#11 Posted by MightyDuck (1200 posts) - 6 months, 14 days ago

I'm curious to see how the Nuketown will be. I enjoyed the original and would just run around with a shotgun.

#12 Posted by pweidman (1960 posts) - 6 months, 14 days ago

Looking forward to Nuketown 2025. It was always a riot in Blops. Always.

#13 Posted by deerokus (424 posts) - 6 months, 14 days ago

Pre-order it then sell the nuketown code. There are mad people on ebay who will pay a lot for that crap.

#14 Posted by FluxWaveZ (17840 posts) - 6 months, 14 days ago

@CatsAkimbo: I think it's ridiculous that you think most people who played Nuketown did so because they cared so much about leveling up as you did.

That's exactly what it is. At least on PC.

I remember going back and trying to play some BlOps let's say, a year or so ago. Nearly every single populated server was "24/7 Nuketown fast XP". I really think you underestimate the draw of the progression system in CoD.

#16 Posted by AlexW00d (5425 posts) - 6 months, 14 days ago

I played Black Ops on a free steam weekend and the first server I chose was fucking Nuketown and it was dreadful so I uninstalled the game.

#17 Posted by FluxWaveZ (17840 posts) - 6 months, 14 days ago

@yinstarrunner: I thought Black Ops had everything unlocked from the start. Or was that MW2? Either way, I suppose that I could be underestimating the appeal of leveling, but as one who's prestiged multiple times, I think it's unfair to immediately think that most people play that map to get fast EXP. If everyone just cared about leveling, people wouldn't play FFA, for example.

Nuketown = small map for easy XP and mindless run in, spray, kill or die gameplay.

It's what Call of Duty does best. (and all it can do)

Easy to see why it was popular.

It's just a map. Rather then focus on the bonus you get for preordering don't preorder because preordering is for suckers.

What kind of logic is this, especially when it comes to a game that one knows they'll get on day 1? Plus, I got a $20 discount for pre-ordering Black Ops 2 and there are so many other such discounts for other games, so I don't see the principle behind not ever pre-ordering.

I really enjoyed Nuketown. It was chaotic especially in free-for-all.

#23 Posted by HairyMike87 (998 posts) - 6 months, 14 days ago

Nuketown was my favorite map out of all the CoD games. I will be happy to know that I can still play it in a way in the new one.

#24 Posted by Fredchuckdave (1686 posts) - 6 months, 14 days ago

Dome from World at War was much better for small maps, particularly on a 32 man server on PC; mass chaos. Nuketown is too linear, needs to be squarish if it's going to be tiny.

#25 Posted by RustySanderke (88 posts) - 6 months, 14 days ago

I loved the constant in-your-face action of the original Nuketown and I'm looking forward to 2025.

#26 Posted by DonutFever (3005 posts) - 6 months, 14 days ago

Not as good as Shipment.

#27 Posted by david3cm (624 posts) - 6 months, 14 days ago

I really hope they have search parameters in this game, like opting out of certain maps a la battlefield 3. That being said I enjoyed nuketown in the original blops, don't know if I will preorder blops 2 or will even buy it on its release, so I hope they release it as paid DLC later.

#28 Posted by Eviternal (121 posts) - 6 months, 14 days ago

In my opinion, the most popular maps of many shooters are the worst:

COD Blops: Nuketown

Battlefield 3: Metro

Team Fortress 2: Two Fort

I prefer tactics to twitch-shooting, so these kill-boxes hold little appeal for me. It's a shame, because these games have great potential to accommodate both twitch players and tacticians.

#29 Posted by aurahack (2031 posts) - 6 months, 14 days ago

Nuketown is the de_dust of Call of Duty. It's frantic, chaotic, and throws any type of self-seriousness out the window. It's, like, the polar opposite of the entire modern military genre and it's why it's so much fun to play on.

But whatever. You can just, you know, quit the lobby if it comes up. (Also I hear it comes in the box with new copies on launch, so... your "not pre-ordering" thing might not be a great plan)

I am also in the anti-pre-order crowd. I find most bonuses game-breaking, immersion-breaking, or otherwise lame and often ignore them, even if I do pre-order. But this Amazon gift card ain't gonna spend itself!

#32 Posted by Phatmac (5245 posts) - 6 months, 12 days ago

Sorry I already pre-ordered it and plan to use the code. :/

#33 Posted by LooseChange (1692 posts) - 6 months, 3 days ago

I played it a few times.

Its too chaotic for me for my tastes though. Seems like fun though if your into that.

#34 Posted by shrinerr (93 posts) - 6 months, 3 days ago

Like Jeff said in the podcast, or was it the QL, more kills = more XP. For me I use it as a warmup. It gets my shooting muscle memory going at full speed. When I've had my fill I move on to a different playlist.

#35 Posted by natetodamax (18926 posts) - 6 months, 3 days ago

I love Nuketown. It puts your reflexes and speed to the test, which makes it really satisfying when you do well.

#36 Posted by Captain_Felafel (1309 posts) - 6 months, 3 days ago

So I picked up my copy of the game yesterday afternoon at a Target, and as it turns out, Nuketown 2025 is not a pre-order bonus, but rather an insert in all first-run copies of the game. I'm glad it's got its own playlist, though, because getting stuck in a Nuketown loop in BLOPS was annoying as hell.

#37 Posted by MikkaQ (9704 posts) - 6 months, 1 day ago

I got the code without pre-ordering, I thought that's what it was so that's a little strange. Anyway yeah, I've avoided the map simply by not playing the game mode, or redeeming the code. Nuketown killed Black Ops for me, rendered it nearly unplayable since it always came up every time. Not a bad map, just not how I like to enjoy my shooters.

#38 Edited by Trilogy (2175 posts) - 6 months, 1 day ago

I think the design of Nuketown is fine, it's the mechanics of the game that make it a problem. I've always hated the grenade design in Call of Duty. The ability to launch a cooked grenade up into the air and have it land on the other side of the map to instakill someone has always rubbed me the wrong way. Overpowered killstreaks don't help matters and only add to the feeling that you're constantly being spawn killed.

Then again, you could argue that the maps should be better tailored to how the game plays.

#39 Posted by ValiantGoat (364 posts) - 6 months, 1 day ago

I redeemed my code for nuketown only so I could get double xp for the weekend. I'll likely never pick the nuketown playlist because it's a garbage level. The sad thing though is when I was on earlier over 1/4 of the players online were in the nuketown playlist, mind boggling.

#40 Posted by jakob187 (20657 posts) - 6 months, 1 day ago

Still haven't redeemed the code for Nuketown 2025. THAT is how hard I'm avoiding that shit.

#41 Posted by FluxWaveZ (17840 posts) - 6 months, 1 day ago

It's not even a map that rotates in FFA. That's fucked up. I was looking forward to playing FFA on the new Nuketown, but I definitely do not have fun in team based modes or objective based ones on it.

#42 Posted by Levio (1389 posts) - 6 months, 1 day ago

Gamers will go where the EXP is, regardless of the game or genre. Even when people know that such tactics may ruin their gameplay experience, they will still do it, completely forgoing other gameplay styles.

It's an odd bit of psychology, since people are perfectly fine with not maximizing their real-life time if there are fun incentives to do other things.

#43 Posted by OneManX (1541 posts) - 6 months, 1 day ago

I remember me and my cousin would just play Nuketown on Split-Screen MP, we'd go RPGs or Crossbow, or something stupid it was the most fun I had playing BLOPS 1 along with Zombies.

#44 Posted by rrcplus (18 posts) - 6 months, 18 hours ago

I didn't mind the old Nuketown, I do however have some issues with the spawning on Nuketown 2025.

#45 Posted by Napalm (9020 posts) - 6 months, 14 hours ago

I'm not sure why you would avoid Nuketown 2025. That map is the ultimate exercise in chaos, weapon management and space control. Also, you get a ton of experience points from Nuketown 2025. I have a blast on that map. I already consider Black Ops II multiplayer to be fairly intense and fast, but Nuketown 2025 just amps that up as far as it can go.

#46 Posted by Hizang (8536 posts) - 6 months, 12 hours ago

The new boat level in the game is pretty much this, the small one not the big one.

#47 Posted by bobafettjm (1000 posts) - 6 months, 11 hours ago

I have always hated the tiny maps in the Call of Duty games, especially Nuketown. I still have a lot of fond memories of Call of Duty 2, like actually being able to have some sort of tactics. However I have noticed that with each game the maps keep getting smaller and smaller. The amount of mid-size maps in Black Ops 2 makes me sad, let alone the complete lack of large maps.

I have been playing this series online pretty consistently since I first bought my 360 and played 2, but this is the first time where I think I might just pass on the next one. The only way I will buy the next installment on launch is if they actually fix the horrible lag compensation that allows me to shoot someone in the back with half a clip only to have them turn around and kill me in just a couple of bullets.

FFA occasionally comes up in the Nuketown 2025 playlist. That mode is especially crazy because people are constantly spawning right behind each other.

i've had FFA come up in match making and i've played it too.

i see what you mean by really popular the server specifically for nuketown has 90,420(or something like that) slots and its OVER LOADED soo many people are trying to play in it i cant even find a game..... off to zombies.

Haters gonna hate. i love nuketown. ill never understand the intense hate that COD gets.i can spend hours playing blops 2 and then go enjoy Dark Souls. i can "PWN SUM NOOBS" and then get lost in the world of Okami.

People seem to enjoy limiting the things they play for the simple reason that they think it makes them unique. what will make you unique is playing a variety of things. but whatevs, enjoy whatever makes ya happy! ill see you in battle!
