Ahem:
With BlackOps and Halo adding standard theatre modes to their games, the prevalence of YouTube gameplay videos has reached what some believe to be its saturation point. Several years ago, only major media outlets could post regular gameplay footage.
Somewhere along the way, a few people discovered capture cards and began making their own videos. For whatever reason, online gameplay seems to be the most popular. Perhaps this is because the most exciting games to watch are highly competitive. Additionally, the online arena seems to be the best place to show off worthwhile skills. Single player gameplay situations tend to repeat themselves, and can be practiced. Playing with people online, and dominating, is not so easy.
Machinima, and its sister channel Respawn, showcase a wide variety of online gameplay videos. Personally, I enjoy the Call of Duty ones the most. I think a combination of a game I know (and play), the commentary, and the awe of watching someone much better than myself make them interesting. Some of the better commentators have also used gameplay videos as launching points for more radio style commentary on various topics, including girls, school, and current events.
The real problem that I have faced is trying to sift through the hundreds of videos available. For every quality gameplay and commentary, there are six or seven terrible ones. The television recorded with a cell phone, boring gameplay, or annoying commentary can ruin the experience. Therefore, I am always excited when I find a video that is unique or interesting.
Today, I discovered a video by Seananners, a Machinima staffer. I have watched his videos for some time, with varying levels of enjoyment, but this one is excellent. It combines skill with a unique idea and competent editing. I would appreciate more videos of this type. I like that it is short as well.
What about you guys? What makes an "Epic Montage" for you? Is it the 360 no-scope? Is it a hilarious glitch? Or does it come down to amazing editing and soundtrack?
Below is the video I consider to be an Epic Montage.
