I've been hearing a lot of very ignorant things about Vietnam, some very very ignorant things.  

"I don't understand why soldiers comeback from war all messed up, Vietnam seems like a fucking playground" 

Wait, you mean there wasn't regenerating health in Vietnam?

People that make comments like that should be given strong encouragement into enlisting in the military.  It would do wonders for their worldview.

I know when I play Call of Duty all I can think of is the earth shattering realism. You've ruined this for me now.

LOL, people think that Black Ops is historically accurate? Bwahaha. First I've heard of that.

Nobody thinks that and Platoon is awful. Try watching a good Vietnam film like The Deer Hunter or Apocalypse Now.

People are implying movies or games can even bring you close to what a real war is like? 
 

I've been to Vietnam. The Vietcong had some pretty fucked up traps yo.

I'm a military veteran from the war in Iraq. If you think war is fun, you're a douche bag. War is awful and you have to be an awful person during war.
 
Only little children would think otherwise- then when they actually go to war they wet their pants. Don't worry, when the bombarding starts just hide in the corner of your bunker and pray to your god it will stop. Eventually you may get used to it, but you'll probably forever hate the things you have to do and what kind of person it made you be.
 
Vietnam, I am told by veterans of this war, was even worse due to the tunnel warfare and us not being given proper intel on too many an occasion (this aspect is not just in the movies, it really happens sometimes even today). On top of that veterans of that war were treated like dirt, and given no respect due to the times.
 
Do not take war lightly, kids, it's serious business. Unfortunately it has to be. People you know and care about die in front of you. They never come back. It's not fun... at all. (This is to anyone who thinks the Vietnam war or war in general is not that bad, btw, not at the OP).

These games and movies function as propaganda. The stories with blatant subversive elements are meant to whitewash what really went on. They're not meant to portray any truth. Much of this is mostly war time psy-ops propaganda, get the people believing in war, paint over the negativity and crimes, and absolve the guilt.

People don't care for truth. It's far too much to handle. They want a version of events which correlates with their own world view.

Oh and on a leaving point, you'd be astonished at how much money gets pumped into mainstream culture to "shape the views of the people" by the CIA and the Military Industrial Complex. Organisations with almost unlimited funds and almost unlimited power end up doing things like this. You'd be surprised at just how much of your reality is manipulated.
