Stuff's gonna blow up in MW3. A lot of it.

We knew another Call of Duty was coming, we figured it was going to be Modern Warfare 3, but Kotaku reported a trove of details about the alleged project today, an information dump about the collaboration between Infinity Ward, Raven Software and Sledgehammer Games.

Infinity Ward has since acknowledged the leak occurred, though said details are inaccurate.

"A lot of hype & a lot of leaked info on #MW3, some still accurate, some not," tweeted Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling. "To avoid spoiling the experience, I'd wait for the real reveal."

Kotaku's reporting on Modern Warfare 3 goes deep into spoiler territory, as the headline suggests. I'm not going to lay those details out here. If you'd like to know more about the storyline, including details about who lives and who dies, I'll point you in their direction. I'll be sticking to the broad strokes here.

== TEASER ==

Like the other Modern Warfare games, Modern Warfare 3 will reportedly take players around the world for a 15-mission campaign, picking up immediately after the cliffhanger from Modern Warfare 2. The game opens with New York City under full assault, takes players to Paris, London and other notable locales under siege in what appears to be World War III, and concludes in--well, I won't say.

Multiplayer will, naturally, play an important role in the sequel, especially expanding the popular Spec Ops mode. Spec Ops will allegedly include both "Mission" and "Survival" modes. The number of traditional multiplayer maps is pegged at around 20, but that could easily change by November.

There's not much that's a surprise here. The surprise is that so much managed to leak before E3, where it's looking like Activision was prepared to finally bring Modern Warfare 3 into the spotlight.

I think I'd rather wait 'til it's out than attempt to navigate Kotaku's awful layout.

Looking foreword to it.

This was a massive leak, like utterly massive.  The story is basically completely spoiled.  All I know is that  SPOILER WARNING: Click here to reveal hidden content.

Is that some sort of dig at the Infinity Ward founders SPOILER WARNING: Click here to reveal hidden content.

Agreed, I havent even visited their stupid site since the new layout.
#9 Posted by Getz (3155 posts) -

Wow, Infinity Ward is so in shambles they have to work with two other teams just to get their next palette swap out the door?

#10 Posted by Yanngc33 (4461 posts) -

This game is going to be bananas if all that story stuff is true

#11 Posted by Pie (7111 posts) -

I haven't saw the leaked story details at all but if this game concludes in space then it might win. Please don't be a dick and respond to this giving away the story

Uh-oh, a story about something on Kotaku. Everyone change your passwords just to be safe.

Laugh at me as much as you want, but my main interest in the Modern Warfare series has always been the single player plot. As ridiculously exaggerated as it may be, I've always really liked it. It's like watching an over-the-top action movie.

So, yeah. Spoilers, I won't read them.

Do you at least get a napkin when you buy a CoD game?

Anyone who laughs at you because of that is a narrow minded idiot. People like what they like and, like you, I very much enjoy the campaigns in the CoD games. I will also be avoiding these spoilers.

I'm not sure where I stand on the debate concerning the "leak", though. On one hand, they can post whatever they want and I'm sure many people would want to read through it and presently are so there's that, but it's also a dick move to those working on the game.

Try this.

I'm still going to buy this game and will probably end up enjoying it quite a bit, but I feel like this leak only highlights how dryly formulaic the series is. I read though everything Kotaku posted and none of it was interesting. I don't feel spoiled and I don't feel like anything has been blown out. It's a Call of Duty game, we already know what that means. Revealing map names, or even plot points, serves little purpose.

Hopefully the PC version won't be a steaming pile of shit this time, not getting my hopes up though.

#23 Posted by President_Barackbar (3474 posts) -

Eh, I've never been a huge fan of the WWIII-ish plot of the MW games. I'm interested to see if they change up the multiplayer, but at this point if they don't drastically change it I'll probably be skipping this one.

Thanks for being able to report this spoiler free.

#25 Posted by ItBeStefYo (1007 posts) -

OH MAN. I just got excited and I was sure I was not going to buy this one. Goddamnit...

#26 Posted by OllyOxenFree (4987 posts) -

Great great great.

#27 Posted by Jeffk38uk (719 posts) -

So long as the plot remains over the top with some notable actors I'll be fine with what they throw at us and from what's been potentially leaked, all over the world to fight in.

Which is what Battlefield 3 is also apparently doing....coincidence.

Will be playing Black Ops up until the day before MW3 is released.

@JoeyRavn: I stupidly read the spoliers, granted I'll have forgotten most of it and to be honest, most of it is a given, people fight, people shoot, people die etc. I do agree though single player is a big hook for me, it drove me to COD4 and as stupid as MW2 was teasers about the story drove me to preorder it.

Damn, that hurts like a throwing knife to the eyeball

Probably the only one who doesn't give a shit

#32 Posted by PatVB (332 posts) -

I really hate the fact that I am excited about a Call of Duty game, but this sounds over-the-top enough to be completely awesome.

#33 Posted by Cybexx (1226 posts) -

I'm actually pretty happy they are not chickening out with a prequel to avoid the Soap and Price fugitives storyline.

Wrong. You're part of a growing legion of disaffected gamers who want to see COD, Activision, Infinity Ward, and all their IP torched and fucked.
#35 Posted by VWGTI (1919 posts) -

Class job on reporting this, Patrick. I would expect no less from you.

#36 Posted by countinhallways (630 posts) -

Leaks always happen, but man this one is a very early, and very thorough.

I imagine there are still some people at Infinity Ward who are less than happy about what went down after MW2. Total speculation here, but perhaps this is someone's way of getting payback.

Not bad, but I learned my lesson with MW2. I'll rent MW3 and just play the campaign.

#39 Posted by Vorbis (2750 posts) -

Still weird they continue to use the IW name but I guess they've broken down enough teams to refill the gaps.

#40 Posted by katanalauncher (215 posts) -

Blah Blah Blah... WAR!!!!! Blah Blah Blah

#41 Posted by FoxMulder (1711 posts) -

So long as it has shooting I think I might pick this up.

#42 Posted by THRICE (167 posts) -

Unless there are some drastic changes to the multiplayer this time around and for the love of god a new graphics engine I'm just gonna get BF3 this ear. Fall is crowded as shit and I think I can skip CoD when theres Battlefield 3 out at the same time.

#43 Posted by AaronChance (143 posts) -

Looks to be in desperate need of a new engine. Quake 3 isn't like it used to be.

hmm interesting theory it does seam like this info has to be largely speculation or from someone on the inside

the amount of information and  the type of information doesn't seam like a press package or even an e3 presentation thats being leaked by some marketing team
#45 Posted by TooWalrus (13256 posts) -

I know it's cool to hate the most popular game in the world, and I'll agree that after the first few weeks, MW2's multiplayer went to shit- but god damnit, I love the stories in the first two Modern Warfare games, and I can't wait to dig in for another dose.

More Spec Ops?  I will purchase this product.

Patrick, you have my respect for reporting this news properly. I just don't get why any sort of video game news outlet would spoil and entire game before we even.

No, seriously. I really just don't get it.
I mean it's one thing to post an endgame spoiler about a week before a game's release. There's a risk for some people getting unwanted spoilers, but it's only a week or so before the game's and even then usually it's just a detail of the story or some sort of hidden reward. This was the entire damn story just laid out in a blog post for the world to see before the game was even announced. Hell I couldn't care less about CoD, but this is still ridiculous.

Again Patrick, I commend you on not sinking to such levels for the sake of being an edgy journalist. Kotaku just done screwed the pooch on this one.

You're really gonna be disappointed to find out that Patrick said he'd do the exact same thing if he had the chance. The only reason he hasn't is because Kotaku has the exclusive sources for this information, so it's unprofessional to steal all their story. He just summed it up and gave a link to the full spoilers.
