Dad makes his 13 year old son read all four treaties of the Geneva convention before letting him play the Mature rated COD: WaW so he can appreciate the reality of war.

I wish more parents took such an active role in their children's gaming habits.

Yeah... the kid gets in trouble if his teammates violate the conventions too? Stupid.

Oh, and this is way old.

Yeah, it's six days old and cluttered all over the board :p

What I like though was that if you're kid is adamant about playing something Mature, then he will have to prove that he *IS* mature enough.
I found the approach a wee bit more clever than just "NO!" or tossing the kid the game and not paying attention to what it is.
At least the parents have an active interest in what they're children are into and are monitoring them responsibly.

I think the dad is really reasonable and its not so much "follow this literally" but more like giving the kid some perspective on the content of the game. A kids first look at war shouldnt relate totally to fun and enjoyment, I think it is a good idea. (although not exactley like that)

i agree with the dad and if it is too bloody for him, he could just use the paintball death card for campaign ;)

(but it seriously isnt even that bad compared to other WWII games)

Not a bad idea, an interesting approach, maybe that and watching flags of our fathers or some other gruesome war story, might help, but if he doesnt want his kid to see the blood then that might not be the best choice.

That is terrible parenting.  What are you talking about?  The Geneva Convention is just a list of rules and regulations regarding international war.  It has very little relevance to appreciating the severity of war.  What they should have done is made him watch documentaries about the brutality of war.  The Band of Brothers series would also have been good.  I'm sure all the Geneva Convention did for the kid was make him ridiculously bored.

Seems reasonable to me. When I was thirteen I would have jumped at that oppurtunity, but instead I would go to a friends house to play Halo and other M rated games.

It's people like you that cause the downfall of mankind.

Anyways, I think it's great that the parents monitor what the kids play, although the fact that they said the violence wasn't too graphic seems a bit off.  Legs get blown off in that fucking game, and there are Nazi zombies.  Nonetheless, if he lets his kid play World at War, he might as well let him play just about any FPS that there is.

Nonetheless, the kid understands things a little better than what he did before, and I'm all for educating children so that they aren't dimwitted fuckstains.

This dood gets an A+...until it comes out that he's a coked-up wife-beater.  If something like that happened, I'd probably wanna cry.

Man, that is actually a great idea, it may be horrible for the kid, but the knowledge he learns before playing the game would probably lead to a better experience, and I agree that parent should get a reward.

Ironically enough the U.S.A never signed the Geneva Conventions, instead they only agreed to it.  At least that's what my old Platoon Sergeant told us while in Iraq.

One of the rules is not to allow a Medic use a crew served weapon (a big gun that requires more than 1 person to use it, usually the other person is merely an ammo bitch), I know this because while we were going on patrols our Medic would sometimes get on the gun in the humvee (M-240b). I remember asking if that was allowed and my Platoon Sergeant told me, and this is a direct quote "We never signed the Geneva Conventions, we only agreed to it."

With that being said, a quick search on Google just proved him to be a liar!. Oh well, it was Iraq. It's not like the guys that were trying to kill us were worried about any sort of Geneva Conventions. :P
