Call of Duty: World at War is a video game that consists of 15 releases

Call of Duty: World at War is a great first-person shooter, but it's still stuck in the shadow of an even greater one.

Treyarch gets back in the saddle with this new World War II-themed first-person shooter based in the Pacific Theater and Eastern Europe.

Call of Duty: World at War is seventh major iteration of the Call of Duty franchise and will take place, like a majority of its predecessors, during the World War 2 conflict. Taking place in the Pacific, World at War will have you fighting the Japanese in two separate campaigns. Making use of the Call of Duty 4 engine, the game will feature feature a 4 player co-op mode, an expanded multiplayer and will bring back the perks system established in Modern Warfare. It was developed by the team behind Call of Duty 3, leaving some fans worried about the game's final quality; concerns that would ultimately be dismissed after the game's overwhelmingly favorable critical reception.

Plot

The story mode features two campaigns, the United States Marine Corps battling the Japanese Imperial Army in the Pacific, and the Soviet Red Army on the European Eastern Front towards the end of the war. Duting a mission entitled Maken Raid, an Allied P.O.W. is shown being tortured by the Japanese before being executed with a Katana sword. The player's character witnesses this scene and is later rescued by Marines who liberate the camp. Two other levels have been revealed by IGN involving the player using the machine guns on a FBY Catalina to attack a Japanese naval fleet, and assisting a Russian sniper attack on German troops under the cover of a bombing raid.

Gameplay

A flamethower in action
Call of Duty: World at War will feature a more mature theme than previous installments in the series. Swimming elements will be introduced to the series for the first time in single player and multiplayer. While in water, the player cannot sprint and will only move at half speed. Flamethrowers, first introduced in Call of Duty: United Offensive, will be reintroduced with new flammable environments. The game will be slightly more open-ended than previous games in the series, as there will be multiple ways to complete missions.

Multiplayer

For the first time in the franchise, World at War will feature cooperative gameplay for up to four players via split-screen (on consoles) or four players online. It will also use a perk system similar to CoD4 and will make use of player-controlled vehicles similar to Call of Duty 3. With support for up to 18 players, the game will also feature an updated party system, which will include the ability to create private parties. The game will level cap at 65, as opposed to 55 for Call of Duty 4, and will have 10 prestige levels. For each prestige level you go through it will reward you with a new slot for creating a class.

Treyarch have also announced a cooperative zombie survival mode within World at War that is unlocked after players complete the single player mode.  It places the 4 players into a deserted house which is attacked in large waves by undead Nazis.  With each kill, players earn points which can then be used to either buy new weapons and equipment or use it to attempt to fortify the house with barricades such as furniture and boards for windows.  Treyarch also revealed that there is no end to the amount of waves that assault the house and that the studios personal best was to survive until wave 23.  On a further note, each player can only sustain 2 attacks from the zombies before they fall to their death.  This very limited health system is questionable only because in the campaign and multiplayer, players can take massive amounts of damage before they bit the dust.

Kill Streak Rewards

World at War features the same kill-streak reward framework as COD4, although the results are different. At both 3 kills without dying, five kills without dying, and seven kills without dying these rewards are issued.
  • 3 kills: Recon Plane- This functions identical to the UAV in Call of Duty 4, it gives you a radar for 30 seconds.
  • 5 kills: Mortar Strike- This is similar to an airstrike in Call of Duty 4, although it concentrates on one place instead of doing a sweep of terrain. Being caught in the vicinity of an airstrike will also disorient you, even if it is a friendly airstrike.
  • 7 kills: Attack Dogs- This reward summons a pack of attack dogs for your team that will seek out enemy players and attack them for a set time limit. These dogs can be killed with almost any weapon in the game, but they come in a pack and move fast. If the dogs are killed, they will respawn and continue attacking until the time limit runs out. A tactical advantage of the dogs is that you can follow them to find the enemy.

Perks

On September 27th, a list of "leaked" perks surfaced on Playstation Universe, purporting to be the near-final list of perks for Call of Duty: World at War. The listed perks are quite similar, and often identical, to those found in Call of Duty 4, with the notable inclusion of a tier of "Vehicle perks". These perks have since been confirmed by Activision and Treyarch as the correct list.

Wii Version

The Wii version of Call of Duty: World at War has all the essential features except many multi-player modes, including Nazi Zombie mode, were cut out. The vehicles from the multi-player modes have also been removed. The lack of compatibility with Wii Speak accessory to communicate with teammates is the main suspected reason for this. All the maps, weapons, leveling, and the perk systems are all fully intact. The Wii controls have been stated to be excellent, although not the best first person controls available on Wii so far, that honor goes to Medal of Honor Heroes 2. The game's visuals have also been stated to be very good looking for a Wii game and that the game offers a great cinematic experience.
