    Canonical Death

    Concept »

When the player's death is addressed and integrated in-game as a part of the player's continuing story. This often involves reincarnation of sorts, or the player continues by moving on to a different character.

    Short summary describing this concept.

    Overview

In many games, when the player character dies he or she simply respawns, or the game resets and the character is alive again. Because this is so common, players have suspended their disbelief and grown used to the triviality of 'dying' in a game, but some games attempt to provide an explanation. For instance, in Crackdown it's said that when an agent is killed, they are replaced by a clone with the exact same attributes and personality. A more straightforward example is ZombiU, in which the player switches to a new survivor every time the survivor they have been controlling dies.
