Originally a mascot of Capcom, Captain Commando appeared in instruction manuals in various Capcom Nintendo Entertainment System games in the 1980s; thanking players for purchasing the game. Captain Commando's name was a reference to the Capcom name - Captain Commando.

Finally receiving receiving his own game in 1991, Captain Commando was powered by the CPS arcade hardware. Captain Commando was later release on the Super Nintendo in 1995 and PlayStation in 1998 But the game was not successful and Captain Commando was dropped as Capcom's mascot. Though the character did became fully established in Marvel Vs. Capcom.

Gameplay

Captain Commando was a one to four player Co-Op game, each player has an eight-way joystick and two buttons. Like other Capcom beat'em ups such as Final Fight and Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, the player has a special move that can be done by pressing the attack and jump button. An original element to the beat'em up formula, was the dash mechanic that is done by tapping forward twice; it is useful for getting out of dangerous situations. The player can also perform a dash attack, or dash jump attack; for example, Captain Commando could unleash his flamethrower upon enemies.

Other means of defense are presented for the player. Combat vehicles - armored mechs - can be used, each mech has a certain ability; one mech can freeze enemies while another can set them on fire.  Weapons like melee and firearms also appear. Some weapons that are available are missile launcher, M-16, ray gun, throwing ninja stars, giant mallet and many others can be use.

Capcom release Captain Commando for the Super Nintendo in 1995. The game featured almost everything that was in the arcade original. The differences lies in the graphics, the colors of the arcade version were more brighter than those of the Super Nintendo. The four player Co-Op was limited down to two as well.

In 1998, a PlayStation version was released only in japan. It was the closes to the arcade game. The PlayStation game allowed four player Co-Op with the use of the milti-tap hardware.

Capcom later release Captain Commando as part of the their compilation of their old arcade games in the form of Capcom Classic Collection Volume 2 in 2006.
