Overview
Carl Bell was a Captain in the United States Air Force before joining the United States Space Administration (USSA) as an astronaut. He became the first human in space on May 5, 1961 when his Defiance 7 space capsule achieved one full revolution around the Earth, lasting 12 minutes and 7 seconds. Upon reentry, the capsule crash-landed, killing Bell inside.
After his death, his skeleton was donated by his wife, Edwina Bell, to the Museum of Technology in Washington, D.C., where it is on display along with his deep space suit.
