Overview
The Castlevania series tell the story of the continually resurrected vampire lord, Dracula, from the vantage point of the heroes who fight his evil time and time again. The best-known protagonists are part of the heroic bloodline of the Belmont family. Armed with their trusty whip, the Belmonts have slayed Count Dracula countless times throughout history.Plot
Set in 1476, 200 hundred years before the events of the original Castlevania, Count Dracula has started to ravage Europe with his army of evil monsters. Though fearful of their superhuman powers, the church recalls the Belmont family of vampire hunters back to Wallachia after a long period of exile. Weilding the vampire slayer whip, Trevor Belmont must journey through the nightmare lands surrounding Dracula's castle en route to defeating the vampire lord and his horde of evil minions. Trevor can either go alone or choose whether to have the aide of three companions, the sorceress Sypha, the thief Grant, or Alucard, the son of Dracula.Gameplay
Like its predecessors, Castlevania III is primarily a side-scrolling platformer. Trevor will have to navigate through the various areas surrounding Dracula's castle, battling hordes of enemies, while avoiding nasty traps and bottomless pits. This time around, Trevor can choose to have one of three companions join him. Each companion plays a bit different and offers different skills. The pirate Grant moves much faster and jumps much higher than Trevor, and can climb walls and ceilings to reach areas that Trevor cannot. Sypha is seemingly the weakest character in the game, but her spells are much more powerful than any other character. Alucard, being Dracula's son, has his father's ability to turn into a bat and fly around the stage. The player can swap between Trevor and his companion at will by pressing the select button. While the original Castlevania was completely linear, and Castlevania II was a free-roaming adventure, Castlevania III takes a hybrid approach. After many of the game's levels, the player is presented with a choice of which level they want to tackle next. Some paths lead directly to Dracula, while others take the long way around to gather different companions. This affords some replayability, as players are unlikely to see everything in the game in one playthrough.
