Best Castlevania series soundtracks?

#1 Posted by RainVillain (480 posts) -

I'm about to start playing Lords of Shadow but noting gets me more pumped for a game than listening to the OST of previous games in the series.
I remember hearing great things about Symphony's soundtrack... but how about the DS games? What about the NES/SNES games?

I've been listening to the soundtrack from Harmony of Despair, and it's fucking awesome. I think some of the songs on there are from previous installments in the series.

Portrait of Ruin has some absolute gems. Here is in my opinion from every Castlevania game I've ever played, the best song in it's history. It's from PoR.

  This one is also amazing.

Man, listening to this game's soundtrack years after playing the game makes me realize how awesome it is. Some really genuinely masterful music in this game.

Lament of Innocence for the PS2 has the best soundtrack. Just listen to this.

Oh my god NO. Don't do this. The last thing you need is all this over-bearing shredding of overly-distorted guitars. All of the Castlevania stuff is great, but all Harmony of Despair did was take the original orchestrated tracks and muddled it all up with insane amounts of middling solos and distorted guitar shredding.

I personally like Castlevania 2 and 3's soundtrack and Symphony of the Night is a classic for all fans, but dear god ruin it all with the Harmony of Despair remixes.

Dear lord, you'd think I just murdered your dog with that kind of response. Er, perhaps not. Maybe a little too over-dramatic. Still, I think you could've responded to that a bit more... adult-like?

I haven't played any of the Castlevania series except the GBA one, Circle of the Moon and Lords of Shadows. I know the series is known for its awesome music though. However, I haven't had the privilege to listen to most of it.
I only got a hold of HD's because a very generous audiophile on GiantBomb uploaded all of it and shared it with all of us. Personally I enjoy the "heavy" feel it gets from the guitar rifts. Mostly because I love playing along with it on my own guitar.
I'm sorry I offended you with my taste in music.

@ESREVER: Don't get me wrong, I like a good amount of heavy guitar riffs too. But frankly speaking, those remixes from Harmony of Despair don't do their original mixes justice. Yeah, I agree it's interesting on the terms of being something new, but it's just not what Castlevania is supposed to be.

@ESREVER: I hope you're also not being serious about being 'sorry' or anything either. You're just as equally entitled to your opinion as I am my own.

@heatDrive88: Perhaps I should go back and listen to the original mixes.

@ESREVER:    When I think Castlevania, this is the music I think of.

These are you typical BGM's in their 8-bit variations. I don't want to wear rosy-glasses, but they are what they are for their time, and they were complex orchestrated pieces in a time where chiptune was the only option. Yeah they can be remixed into various contemporary forms, but not everything needs a metal remix to be interesting.
