Weirdest "cake" reference ever...

#1 Posted by Zaapp1 (657 posts) -

So during Chapter 3 level 1, right after you meet the fairies, there's a dead knight with a scroll on him that literally says "...I can happily declare that the 'Cake' is not a lie!"  WTF Castlevania...WTF.

#2 Posted by MooseyMcMan (10384 posts) -

I was beginning to wonder if I was the only person who noticed that.

I don't see any problem with it though, because it is such a ridiculous time/place for a reference.

#3 Posted by SethPhotopoulos (5060 posts) -

I will accept this proclamation.

#4 Posted by TeflonBilly (4713 posts) -

That isn't the only Portal reference in this game.
Hell, it's not even the only blatant reference to other games in it as well.

Made me smile

Made me facepalm.

#6 Posted by floodiastus (1262 posts) -

I noticed it as well, funny stuff

#7 Posted by steevl (193 posts) -

It felt kind of unnecessary and forced to me. I appreciated the other reference to Portal a lot more because it was a bit more subtle.

But it was an excellent game regardless.

#8 Posted by Enigma777 (6057 posts) -

Yea, it was a lame reference.

The absolute best reference I've seen in any game was Borat in Singularity.

#9 Posted by FreakAche (2948 posts) -
@steevl: Haven't played Castlevania yet. What is the other Portal reference?
#10 Posted by animateria (3252 posts) -

Late to the party.

Very, very, very late to the party.

Also, totally not funny.

I think this falls into the category of not far away enough to be nostalgic but not close enough to be relevant. Kind of like most Capcom products.

#12 Posted by FlyingRat (1445 posts) -

That sounds really dumb...

#13 Posted by JustKamToo (656 posts) -

Don't do cake kids, ok

Sten at the end of Dragon Age saying the cake is a lie I find much weirder.

I guess they realized right before their deadline that they needed anolther Portal reference and came up with this one after five seconds of brainstorming.

In the Necromancer's Abyss level near the end of the game, you find a brotherhood knight scroll that says "I am trapped on this floating rock. This land is one huge, insane puzzle with hundreds of mirrors that can transport you anywhere; such is the so-called 'Aperture Magic' from the Necromancers..."

But still much, much funnier because...well it's Sten!

This made me grin because I didn't get the joke for a few seconds. Probably the best Portal reference I've ever seen.

#24 Posted by IkariNoTekken (990 posts) -

Wait a second...does Patrick Stewart narrate it or is it just for you to read?

#25 Posted by Diamond (8634 posts) -
@IkariNoTekken:  The game has a lot of diaries / logs that are just for reading, this is one of the ones you read.

"The cake is a lie" isn't really that funny to begin with, so I wouldn't hold it against anyone if they can't pull off a good "cake" reference. It'd take a lot to make it funny.

That's a shame, thanks for letting me now anyway.

We're still making cake references?
Listen, once I realized the cake has been a lie since Super Mario 64, I've been done with it.

#33 Posted by ch3burashka (4993 posts) -

So, can we safely assume that Castlevania and Portal exist in the same universe?

Hey yeah, she makes a cake at the end, but where is the cake that she made before he came? WTF Peach? Were you just calling me over for...ok yeah, thats cool.

@nintendoeats: I always assumed the letter was a fake, and Bowser just has really feminine handwriting.
Your theory makes much more sense though.

i played Singularity for about 3-4 hours and stopped.. didnt reach that letter, it seems.

That is just about the unfunniest (that's a word now) way you can reference that.

#40 Posted by craigbo180 (1739 posts) -
@HandsomeDead:
Fair enough then. I completely agree with you about the portal "cake" reference not being nostalgic or relevant but I cant really think what Capcom products you are referencing though?

@JustKamToo: More people need to watch Brass Eye.
