Which Castlevanias are you during Castlevania Month?

#1 Posted by Gr1mace (74 posts) -

My pals and I have officially declared October "Castlevania Marathon Month". We try and play through as many Castlevania games as we can get our hands on before the 31st. So which are you playing at the moment?

I'm currently working through Order of Ecclesia and Dawn of Sorrow while at work. And SotN, Chronicles, and Legacy of Darkness at home.

Since I haven't played Order of Ecclesia yet despite owning it, I may join your quest and play that one.   :P

#3 Posted by Gr1mace (74 posts) -

You totally should good ser. I'm about 60% through my first play through of it and am having a glorious time with the game.

@Gr1mace:

Dude, I think that's totally awesome. I wish I had friends such as you guys.

I still haven't finished Portrait of Ruin. Need to get around to that.
#5 Posted by Gr1mace (74 posts) -

Hell if everyone had pals like mine everyone would sit around playing Castlevania. Which, probably wouldn't be too bad!

Haven't played Portrait myself, though I've heard good things. Hop to it ser, its Castlevania Marathon Month! *'splodes*

Went through Legacy of Darkness......twice. Now I'm wondering if I should unpack the genesis and play bloodlines, or go way oldschool with Castlevania III

#7 Posted by ZeForgotten (10397 posts) -

Just went through Castlevania Chronicles on the PS3 (Downloaded from Playstation Store, obviously)

#8 Posted by eroticfishcake (7782 posts) -

I've just about played a majority of them but I might replay SoTN for the sixth time when I get the chance.

#9 Posted by AngeTheDude (644 posts) -

I just beat my first Castlevania game, Super Castlevania IV. That was a bitch to beat!

#10 Posted by keyhunter (3207 posts) -

Castlevania 64 is pretty dope.

#11 Posted by ArbitraryWater (11477 posts) -

I could try to play Order of Ecclesia, only to get frustrated and give up when I reach one of the game's brutally hard bosses. Or, I could play Symphony of the Night, which is a far better game.

Sounds like some Order of Ecclesia, Castlevania III, Super Castlevania IV, and Judgment are in order.

I should play Portrait of Ruin sometime soon. I haven't even beaten the first boss.... yes I suck at videogames.

I honestly don't know why people complain about the boss difficulty in that game.  Yes, they're not easy, but when I ran into trouble, I did some leveling, got some better gear and tried different glyphs.

Yeah, even with grinding the bosses in OoE are more than capable of taking your health down in only a few hits, and when those attacks cover half the fucking screen no fun is had.

Ecclesia was tough but I wasn't truly overwhelmed until Dracula, and then hard mode handed my ass to me. I dislike the old Castlevanias because the jumping and stair climbing mechanics make them unnecessarily hard, but the newer Metroidvania ones tend to be too easy. Ecclesia was a good balance.

#17 Posted by ArbitraryWater (11477 posts) -
@SuperfluousMoniker: Wasn't Circle of the Moon pretty hard? That's what I keep on hearing from people.

@ArbitraryWater: That one I haven't played. Maybe I should try it for Castlevania month!

Dawn of Sorrow was pretty had too at times.

I've been playing Order of Ecclesia all year as a portable backup for when I'm waiting for a train or something.

Dawn of Sorrow was fun until I got to the ends of the boss fights.  Having to win battles by drawing the seals on the screen got aggravating as the game went on.

Order Of Eclesia
Symphony Of The Night

Super awesome games

#22 Posted by Sticky_Pennies (2019 posts) -

A few weeks ago I bought the XBLA version of SotN and 200/200'd the achievements.
It was just as much fun as I remember it. :D

#23 Posted by Gr1mace (74 posts) -

The difficulty on Ecclesia is one of my favorite things. Mostly because it's an honest difficulty. It's not hard for off screen enemies pot-shotting you or a super crappy camera. It's just hard, and can be over come by practice.

At Dracula's Castle in OoE now. It's kind of slaughtering my plans for the others this month. Game is just too awesome IMO.

#24 Posted by Duo (5 posts) -

@ ArbitraryWater: Yes, Circle of the Moon is really freaking hard. lol

I'm tryin for all the achievements on the 360 SotN version, as well as going through hard mode on OoE.........wow. At some point I wanna sit down and grind through Castlevania III and wondering if I should go through Curse of Darkness.

I just started Portrait the other day. I'm digging so far, just after so much Ecclesia it feel very easy.
#26 Posted by Gr1mace (74 posts) -

I just have to say. The Large Cavern in Ecclesia is one of the most divinely difficult things ever.

I still need to beat NES Castlevania III.

Kill me now. The second to last stage has this absolutely brutal stair climbing + pone pillar + gargoyle section. I'm not sure I'm hardcore enough for this game.
#28 Posted by AngeTheDude (644 posts) -

I'm currently going through Harmony of Dissonance, and I'm so lost. I hope I eventually stumble onto what I'm supposed to be doing. This is my first Metroidvania.

Im playing Dawn of Sorrow and it has nothing to do with this.
The stylus aspect is so shitty.

#30 Posted by CitizenJP (1006 posts) -

Nice, a Castlevania thread. One of my favorite videogame genres of all time hehe!! Well, when I get into the Castlevania mode, the ones I hit up and slay my way through are:

1.) Symphony of the Night
2.) Circle of the Moon
3.) Aria of Sorrow
4.) Dawn of Sorrow

Sad to say but I have yet to play Order of Ecclesia. :(

You and I may be the only ones on the entire site that own that game.

In my opinion the best. I bought this when it first came out back in like 92, and I can't even count how many times I have gone through and beaten it in one sitting. One of my favorite games of all time.

I've been pondering picking up Dracula X Chronicles.  How long does it take to unlock Symphony of the Night, out of curiosity?

Might replay Portrait of Ruin, or I might go ahead and play the first one through just for kicks.

Buying Order of Ecclesia ain't out of the question, either.

Once you learn their patterns properly, most bosses are pretty easy:/

It doesnt take long. It's a secret item I think halfway though the game that I had to lookup to find. If you're just looking for SOTN the PSN has it for 15$ I think. The DXC version of Symphony has 2 "new" familiars and a Maria mode, but sadly its STILL not the saturn version of the game.

And more people need judgement >.> lol

Why can't every month be Castlevania month?

With that said, OoE is very very fun, it was a very good blend of just about every 2D Castlevania in existence. Being fairly new to the series, I have yet to play SotN in its entirety. So with that said, I will be working on SotN, which I just started.
