A game that uses a mixture of 2D & 3D techniques. Commonly used to describe the use of either 3D graphics restricted to a 2D perceptive, or 2D graphics used to fake the appearance of a 3D perceptive.
Sure, these days have almost every game sporting the newfangled 3D, but way back when, everyone had to live with plain old 2D. 2D, or two dimensions, limit the game to scrolling backgrounds, but some games even now make use of this basic concept.
The Chupacabra is a purported creature resembling a gargoyle, said to exist in parts of Mexico, Puerto Rico and of course, video games.
A headless horseman of Irish folklore. It is said to carry its own severed head, bearing a mischievous grin that reaches from one side of the face to the other.
Frankenstein's monster is the creature inspired by the Mary Shelley novel, Frankenstein. Usually creatures inspired by this theme are made from different body parts and almost always have bolts through their necks. They're usually naive and destructive.
A monster in Castlevania II: Simon's Quest that attacks with its claws.
It's arguably the one move that symbolizes the medium to those outside it. The ability to jump, be it onto a building, a platform, or a skull, is one of the all time most important abilities ever put in a video game.
A ghost or cryptid in Japanese folkore that takes on the appearance of a fuzzy (usually white) ball. Appears frequently in the Castlevania games, where it is known as "Fuzz Buster" in the western versions.
The meter which is used to gauge how much power there is left to use magic abilities.
A game where you eventually receive a map of an area. Like in Metroid Prime you have map download stations to get a map outline of the area. This is the same concept in the exploring Castlevania games.
Medusa Heads are found in Castlevania games. They fly around trying to collide into the player.
A style of action-adventure gameplay revolving around exploring a labyrinth with the necessity of locating new items and equipment to progress beyond otherwise impassable obstacles. The concept is named for its common usage in the Metroid and Castlevania franchises. While the term most commonly refers to 2D games, it can also refer to 3D games.
Sirens are alluring seductresses that have been depicted in many ways including avian hybrids (Greek mythology), mermaids, or regular women.
When someone takes someone else's soul or life essence. They may do it to get more health, power-ups, or just because they are just plain evil!
A succubus is a demoness with the appearance of a beautiful woman that seduces men to steal their energy during sexual encounters.
Vampires are undead, nocturnal creatures that subsist on blood. They have superhuman powers and are sometimes able to shape-shift. They are weak against sunlight, foreign objects stuck in and left in their hearts, decapitation and sometimes holy water and crosses.
Zombies, more accurately called the walking dead, are reanimated corpses who feed on the living, and have become a ubiquitous video game enemy. They often move slowly, but can be deadly in large numbers, which is unfortunately how they tend to travel. Shotgun time!
