Hello From Las Vegas!

Well, the Mortal Kombat countdown (kountdown?) running over on noob.com expired at 3PM today and revealed no new news about the next game. Ryan and I are here in Las Vegas, where Midway is apparently going to announce the next MK game, but I’m not sure if it’ll be something we can talk about today, as I’ve heard a couple of conflicting reports about embargo times and dates and stuff. So the news from Midway’s event might remain under wraps until tomorrow. My guess is that the MK stuff will hit today and that the rest of the stuff from the event won’t hit until tomorrow.

But there’s already a healthy amount of speculation out there about the next MK, with most of the juiciest rumors pegging the game as Mortal Kombat vs. DC Comics. Apparently GamesRadar ran (and quickly removed) some sort of header image on its site called “MKDC blog–article_image” and it has a silhouette in it that looks very Superman-like.

Dude, MK vs. DC? Really? Like I said, we’ll send word when we get the chance, but we’ll be sitting in the middle of a press conference, so if you’re dying to know, you might want to click around a bit to see who ended up with the exclusive on the announcement and trailer. Personally, I could go either way on the crossover rumors, I’m much more interested in hearing about how it plays, whether it’ll have weapon stances in it or not, and so on.

Besides, we all know that any one of those MK characters could punch Superman’s fool head clean off. Dude hasn’t been in a good game since the Atari 2600.

[UPDATE] None of the Midway info will be free to run until tomorrow evening, so check back then for more details!

The Giant Bomb Video-Game Movie Experiment: Prologue

I think there’s little doubt that, as far as film genres go, few are as unloved and carry as mercenary a heart as the video-game movie. But just because most video-game movies are universally maligned by game and film enthusiasts alike doesn’t mean they don’t deserve an honest critical appraisal. This, along with a perverse disregard for my mental health, is the driving force behind the Giant Bomb Video-Game Movie Experiment, in which I will challenge myself to watch and assess every video-game movie ever made.

But before I dive into this potentially soul-sucking venture, let’s establish a few ground rules. I’m not talking about movies like Tron, WarGames, or The Wizard, which are movies with prominent video-game themes, but rather, movies based on actual video games. The establishment of this rule led to considerable debate with Jeff as to whether the 1984 Dabney Coleman masterpiece Cloak & Dagger would make the cut, since the game and the movie were in production simultaneously. I eventually conceded to include Cloak & Dagger on the list, just to shut Jeff up about it. Though, really, do I need an excuse to watch a Dabney Coleman movie? While we’re on the topic, how is it possible that Short Time isn’t available on DVD?

Additionally, I’ll be excluding most animated video-game movies, if, for no other reason, to relieve me of the obligation to watch lots of terrible anime. I’ve got a pretty high tolerance for awful movies, but I’m not sitting through five goddamn Pokemon movies, OK? I’ll make exceptions for stuff like Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within and Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, even though they’re essentially polygonal anime, since they have a tad more relevance outside of Japan. I was considering barring any direct-to-video releases, but that would deprive me the joy of screening inexplicably Boll-less sequels like House of the Dead 2: All Guts, No Glory and BloodRayne 2: Deliverance, so DTV movies are fair game.

I’ll approach each movie with two primary critical concerns. One, when divorced entirely from the source material, how does the movie stand up? Two, how well does the movie evoke the spirit of the game it’s based on? These might seem like pretty diametrically opposed criteria, but attempting to pull off both seems to be the yet-to-be-obtained equilibrium of video-game filmmaking, so it seems fitting. Hell, most can’t manage to fulfill either. You can expect my personal biases to shine brightly here, since there are a few video-game movies where I have little knowledge about the source material, and I have no intentions of cracking open Final Fantasy VII in 2008.

I originally intended to attack the list in chronological order, but in a bid to make the ordering of the movies every bit as nonsensical as the Giant Bomb Video-Game Movie Experiment itself, I will instead view them in descending order of the Netflix “best guess” rating generated from the ratings I’ve personally given other movies. This choice stems from the fact that I’m a complete lunatic and already organize my Netflix queue this way, though by going with a personalized best-to-worst ordering, I’m ensured the most waterboarding movie-watching experience possible. Like every other hastily established rule in the Giant Bomb Video-Game Movie Experiment, there will be a few exceptions, such as Double Dragon, which is apparently rare enough that I had to go hunt down a copy on eBay, as well as the upcoming Postal movie, for which I simply cannot wait for the DVD release to see.

With all of the behind-the-scenes work we’re doing on Giant Bomb, along with the increasingly hectic pre-E3 schedule, I’m reticent to commit to a hard schedule for this terrible idea, though I’d like to do installments somewhere between weekly and monthly. For now, take comfort in the fact that Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is currently at the top of my Netflix queue.

Giant Info Bomb #2: Reviews, Podcasts, and More!

- Yes, it’s our plan to publish video reviews alongside our text reviews. But that’s a fairly time-and-resource-intensive process that requires us to have more equipment than we currently have. We’ve had a meeting or two about getting our studio priced out, purchased, and installed. So once that’s out of the way, we’ll start playing around with video reviews.

- I’m working on a guidelines article that describes how Giant Bomb reviews games. It’ll be ready in time for the general site launch, but the basic idea is that three stars is roughly equivalent to “it’s OK” or “this game is average” or “I am entirely indifferent about this product.” Five stars is, roughly-speaking, “this game is great and/or awesome.” One star is probably something like “at one point I thought about vomiting while playing this game.”

Also, just to reiterate, there are NO half-points on our scale.

- We’re deciding on schedules for the podcast and the How To Build A Bomb video series. We’ll probably record the podcast on Tuesdays (we just recorded a new one, Ryan’s next to me with headphones on, hacking out all the bits where I accidentally sound intelligent and replacing them with farm noises), but the video will probably be shot and posted when something meaningful happens. I think the next video will be shot tomorrow and posted on Thursday. We’re starting to have more regular discussions about site development stuff.

- While I think there are plenty of opportunities to play video games and get laid (though maybe not simultaneously), I felt the need to link you to this Dragon Boy Suede video, called “Quit Playing Video Games and Get Laid,” because I really like the line “more chicks, less Missile Command.” As someone who owns a Missile Command machine, I’ll just say that it’s not quite as useless in that department as you might think. Or, at least, it’s not an either/or. Look, just watch the video. Best use of a Power Glove since that episode of G4’s CinemaTech where we took Carrie Gouskos’ Power Glove into a men’s bathroom.

Giant Bomb: Your Questions Answered!

Hey everyone, just wanted to pop in and say thanks for all the e-mails of support that have been pouring in since the blog went live. Together, we can build something seriously radical.

I also wanted to address a handful of the common questions that have been coming in from you so we can get the easy stuff out of the way all at once. So, here are a few things…

- If you want to change the icon you get when posting comments, head over to www.gravatar.com and sign up. You can upload images there, and they’re tied to your e-mail address. So whenever you use that e-mail address to post comments on a gravatar-enabled blog or site, that image will pop in. It’s not an instant process, though, so once you get your image uploaded, you may have to wait a few hours for the image to start appearing.

- Yes, we will definitely have forums on giantbomb.com. Building a community of people who love games is a big part of what Giant Bomb is all about.

- Thanks for all the offers to donate money, equipment, or other stuff like that, but we’re currently taken care of on that front. The best thing you can do to help us is to tell your friends about the site. Spread the word!

- We aren’t currently doing any hiring, but we will be down the line. When we’re hiring for a position, we’ll post about it on the site with an e-mail address you can send resumes to.

- If you have serious business-related inquiries or proposals, feel free to keep sending them to the info e-mail address at the top of the page and someone will get in touch with you.

- And yes, we have a security system.
