I've been thinking how hentai-ish it looks or is it just me.
I don't know?

It's rated T. I don't think it'll be hentai.

I know. It's hard to believe they would do that. That reminds me, I need to finish Bayonetta.

Fo realz.

Maybe it'll get an M in the US, since we hate sex here.

@JJWeatherman: It probably will be M in the US. Persona 4 had a lower age rating than Catherine in Japan but was still rated M in the US.

It'll probably get a MA+++++++++ rating in Australia, if the game even comes out here :I

nothing wrong with sexualisation in games.

#11 Edited by Farley_Lives (278 posts) -

It's kinda weird you say that, since hentai comes from the word for perverted.

IF, it isn't as bad as we all think it's going to be and the majority of the game is focused on the horror aspect, It has a good chance of making it here, (with different box art of course).  Then some shitty mother can buy it for there 14 year old, and later complain she was tricked into buying pornography for her child, because she doesn't pay attention to what she's buying.

You also can't spell Nippon Ichi Software of America without "nips".

It would be even funnier if she bought the game for her daughter cause a woman's on the cover with a pink background.

Just because something has sex, doesn't mean it's porn people.

EDIT: And I'll also add that some of the pictures are pretty disturbing.

Not sure about you, but I don't think most people will choke the chicken at the giant evil fetuses.

Yes. There are a trillion billion movies with storylines about sex and relationships. Actual stories, not porn. Because sex and relationships actually go together, believe it or not. Is it just because it's a video game that people feel weird about  sexual themes? I'm really looking forward to a game that deals directly with mature relationships among ordinary people, all wrapped up in some nice psychological/supernatural horror. Most games are about sheer violence, or really the exterior world. This game is focused on the inner world, our crazy psychological depths. And our nightmares filled with pompadoured sheeple.

Its rated C-a high teen rating.  Let's compare!  Persona 4 got a B rating, so like a low teen,.  Gal Gun looks on pace for a D rating, so like what R is supposed to be.  A Z rating, equivalent of Adults Only?  God of War III

Yeah I think it is because it's a game doing it. Games never handle relationship stuff in a mature or even remotely realistic way, so when I see shit like this in games, I'm not thinking "Oh, here's the Casablanca legendary relationship of video gaming here", I'm thinking "great, more pervy japanese stuff, but it's SMT, so I'll let it slide".
#30 Posted by Colin (707 posts) -

Isn't the word we are looking for ecchi?

#31 Posted by guiseppe (2842 posts) -

Neither? If anything involving sex would be "perv", we'd all be perverts. But then again, maybe we are? Hmm.

I don't. Look at any advertising for this game, hell look at the top of the thread, it's already been handled in poor taste.

It doesn't need to be either of the two. It could also simply be a "decent enough story that tries to convey adult themes". Going by what the developers have been saying in their blogs, I'm pretty sure that's the intent here.

I ,personally, don't see anything wrong with it. It fits the sexual themes the game is trying to explore.

Sure, there the advertisements shown so far undoubtedly carry the double role of pandering to basement dwellers, but I can't say I've seen anything too out of line yet given the subject matter. Especially the cover, I think its summarizes the game perfectly.

I dunno man, so far I've only been seeing fully clothed cartoon ladies and PG-13 sex scenes.
#37 Posted by Animasta (14718 posts) -

eh, advertising often has nothing to do with the actual game.

remember this?

  1. It's Atlus. They're not ones to lower themselves and make a hentai game.
  2. The game wouldn't even be allowed to have any full frontal nudity in it. Not to mention it's rated C, an equivalent of a T rating, in Japan.
  3. Catherine evidently has more to it than sexual themes.
  4. Sex and love is an actual thing that Atlus wants to tackle realistically.
  5. The media and advertisement surrounding the game doesn't necessarily demonstrate what the game's going to be all about.

If you believe that what we've seen from the trailers, until now, is representative of a hentai game, you're just part of the vast U.S. audience who believes a hint of sex in a game, especially from cartoon characters, equals pornography/hentai and that violence is much more tolerable than sex. The only thing I found a bit iffy in the media surrounding this game was the one advertisement of Catherine eating a pizza with drippy cheese. Other than that, I don't see anything that could even lead me to believe that this would be a hentai.

Considering it's Atlus, well done and not trashy is always one of their goals.  Marketing =/= game.  We of all people should be able to grasp that concept very well.

But it is.

Despite all the loli harem shows and generic ass 15 year olds in giant robots saving the universe, anime atleast has talent like Miyazaki or Urusawa

Videogames greatest achievement in the storytelling department is a glorified choose-your-own adventure book(Planescape:Torment).....which is written pretty decently over all, true. But that's all it is: decent.
