    Atlus were expecting the game to sell 150,00 copies over both consoles overall (source
     
    So yeah that is kinda crazy. Not only did it break its own sales target but also it sold twice as much as Marvel vs Capcom 3 (be it because of the bigger focus on arcades in Japan). I just hope that Atlus US announces a English version soon.

    That's great news. I can't wait to see a Western release from them.

    Now that they gots all that extra cash (and a useless 360 port in Japan), they can localize it here, maybe?

    They were almost certainly spreading the development cost of the engine across this and all future games.

    Could be that they did projections involving western market sales if (when?) they localise, plus the benefits for them to have a 360/PS3 engine and experience with those platforms moving forward with Persona 5 etc. R&D for their next few projects could be largely covered by what they did with Catherine, cutting costs on projects that will be pretty much guaranteed to perform well, such as more Shin Megami Tensei. ie They might not have planned on turning a big profit on this, but it made financial sense when looking ahead.
     
    Anyway, great that it's doing so well for them. I was worried that they'd decide development for the Wii would make the most sense for them, but they went with 360/PS3 and were clearly vindicated. I hope it's more incentive for them to bring the game to the west sooner!

    Especially not new a IP in a single region. I wouldn't be surprised if those numbers were low-balled as much as possible.

    I wouldn't be surprised if they low balled the estimate either, but whatever, as long as there is an english version that I can play in the future I'll be happy..

    With exception of the Persona games, 150,000 copies sold is a very distant dream for a smt game.

    Wow that's great. I was afraid it would not get enough attention since it's not about quests to get dragons, yakuza or moeblob bullshit. Also 150000 is huge in Japan.

    @Bocam: If you consider 150,000 "low expectations", then they have those for Persona too, since their best-selling game ever, Persona 4, only sold 300k within its entire lifetime in Japan. Catherine may be surpassing that.

    yeah, but they've also got like 4-5 projects going on at one time; Trauma stuff, Etrian Odyssey, Ports...

    Which is very impressive given the usual sales data SMT games get in Japan. Best selling Atlus developed game.
