Cave Story (A.K.A. Doukutsu Monogatari) is a freeware "Metroidvania"-style 2D action game for the PC and Mac created entirely by Pixel. It was later released on WiiWare (and DSiWare) complete with updated graphics and a remastered soundtrack.

US Release Date: Dec. 20, 2004

EDIT2: As soon as I switched over to the Amped 3 quick look...they stopped working. Boo.

The music in this game is awesome.
 
Also anyone using firefox 3.6, make sure to add giantbomb to your whitelist for ad block.  The new video player didn;t work for me until i did that.

Yeah this isn't working for me either... but the dumb DS commercial worked fine. Same browser: Firefox on Mac OSX 10.6.
 
(And yes, adblock is disabled for Giantbomb, as it always has been.)

Looks exactly like the free PC version... which if you didn't know, is the best free game ever made, seriously, its really good.

I think I saw the words Level Down.  That's a strike right off the bat.
 
Maybe it's not as bad as it sounds, but FFXI has really soured me to the idea.

Dude this new video player sucks ass. Half the time it won't play and it can't remember my settings like the old one, so I have to keep switching back to HIGH.

I played a little of the original but eventually my sucky laptop couldn't handle it and the game's fps took a nose dive as the game slowed down to a crawl. 
 
Got a better laptop now, so maybe I'll get this for Wii, wait wat?

@Bloviator: You don't gain or lose character levels. You pick up gem things to power up your weapons, and getting hit by enemies drains the power-up.

If you want to know how Cave Story plays, download the pc or mac version, and play it for a bit. It is obviously inferior to this wiiware version, but you can still get an idea of what's up. It's also freeware, for your information.
