The developers of The Witcher II are making a game based on pen-and-paper-RPG Cyberpunk.

Please, please let it actually be called Cyberpunk!

CD Projekt Red said the game will be “richly detailed, non-linear, and with a complex and gripping story,” which sounds like something you’d hear from the guys responsible for The Witcher series.

Actual details on the game are slim, but we’re to expect “twists” in the design techniques the studio has employed in its previous games. Given the tonal shift and new universe, that makes sense. It’s likely Cyberpunk will involve a bunch more shooting than you were ever doing with magic in The Witcher.

This is not, however, the same team who worked on The Witcher and The Witcher 2, though several “veterans” of the franchise will be part of this new team.

It’s unclear if Cyberpunk will end up anywhere besides the PC, but with CD Projekt Red expanding onto Mac and console platforms lately, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise to see Cyberpunk elsewhere.

Was never really interested in The Witcher, but they're clearly a talented group so this could be pretty cool. There needs to be more cyberpunk games.

#4 Posted by dragonzord (825 posts) -

You and Vinny would play it, Patrick. Those other people you work with would complain that it's too difficult and give up.

Maybe I've just got Deus Ex: Human Revolution on the brain, but I hope this ends up being radically different.

I demand an archived version of the GoG.com guy's smooth slow jam.

#7 Posted by Phatmac (5726 posts) -

Yeah I'd play this.

#8 Posted by FlipperDesert (2103 posts) -

I want it. So bad. And I've pretty much only taken in the name.

#9 Posted by umdesch4 (773 posts) -

Yeah, this and a Shadowrun game that's actually like, you know, Shadowrun. I'd buy both of those.

#10 Posted by xx1nfidelxx (5 posts) -

It IS called CyberPunk

If anyone can pull it off, it's these guys. That reminds me, I really should get around to playing The Witcher 2.

Can't wait for the special edition that contains the Billy Idol album as a bonus.

I am confused. I heard this was going to be a free to play dress up game for IOS with neon micro-transactions.

CD Projekt is the RPG genre's next big saviour. That is, until everyone starts shitting on them too, Bioware style.

I'm no pessimist, though, so I look forward to this game.

This makes me sad because more Witcher is my kind of Witcher. But it makes me happy because THE WITCHER DEVELOPER DOING SCI-FI!!!!! (and yes, I'm aware it's not THE team, but my point still stands)

It's spelled Cyberpunk not CyPerpunk.

Sincerely, Your Friendly Neighbourhood Typo Commenter.

I hope that new Shadowrun game ends up being decent.

Gonna follow this with great interest, can't wait to see what visuals RED Engine can pull off in a new setting.

After playing the Witcher 2 on 360, I'm extremely excited to see what CD Projekt Red makes next. I hope it'll come to console(s), but I wouldn't be surprised to see it beome PC exclusive.

This will be CD Projekt's KOTOR, where half of the D&D/Witcher fans accuse them of selling out and the other half are still super into it. Then their next big thing after this will lose the other half of the Witcher fans (who will say CD Projekt is RUINED FOREVER), and lose half of the fans from Cyberpunk. And on and on.

I play tabletop and I've never heard of Cyberpunk. Or at least, there's really no one who would tell me to play it when there's perfectly good Shadowrun available.

You can tell it's the future because of the hexagons.

Cool. This could be really really awesome.

So, is this video game based on R. Talsorian's Cyberpunk 2020*? If so is it the Interlok version or Fuzion? Can anyone understand my mostly obsolete rpg nerd babble?

*Probably not because while that sounded WAY cool in late 80's and early 90's these days that's only eight years from now.

In fairness, Bioware's style of games has shifted pretty radically in the past few years. It's really not hard to see why those who loved them through Baldurs Gate, Neverwinter Nights and KoTOR, turned on them because of DA2 and the Mass Effect sequels. CD Projekt are being lauded for not watering down their games for mass market appeal.

"Witcher Developers Making Game Based on Pen-And-Paper RPG Cyberpunk"

This sounds like a title for a Kotaku article, you don't need to tell us who CDP is in the title Patrick, a link to the site's own wiki is good enough.

Awesome!

Will be definately keeping an eye on this project.

This should fill the Blade Runner void now that Prey 2 won't see the light of day for a while.

#35 Posted by TheHT (11661 posts) -

Thought they'd do a third witcher before moving on. Better to take a break I guess and maybe come back to it with some fresh eyes and possibly some new skills. Couldn't ask for a better departure though. Love me some cyberpunk.

#36 Posted by Svenzon (727 posts) -

Cool news! Seems to be a bit of a cyberpunk revival going on lately. I like it!

#37 Posted by Colinpatchin (14 posts) -

I played so much cyberpunk back in Highschool. I'll be stocking up on Cheetos and mt dew, see you guys at club chrome.

#38 Posted by Mathey (455 posts) -

I'm in only if there is sex and nudity.

I'm sure this will be excellent, but part of me would rather they make a game set in the Witcher universe, but also the future. How nuts would that be?

#42 Posted by FancySoapsMan (5854 posts) -

Sounds great, I just really hope it's released on consoles.

#43 Posted by YapaPanda (128 posts) -

Where is this, and how can I throw money at it as soon as possible.

Yo dawg, get this: what if this is that.

This is great news! Nothing more to add. I'm looking forward to seeing more soon.

Wait, like Cyberpunk 2013,2020 V3?

As in Johnny Silverhand and Morgan Blackhand fighting Arasaka's Boys in Black?

OH SHIT! I CANNOT FRAKKING WAIT FOR THIS CHOMBATTA!

#49 Posted by Rawson (136 posts) -

Good. CD Projekt Red are one of the few developers out there that know how to make RPGs.

Not sure. Frankly most of the people reporting wouldn't even know to ask. Personally, I wouldn't be against another take on the stats.

And really our worlds diverged in like 1990. At the very least Cyberpunk 2013 was the first edition, so we are one year away from street samurai loaded with cyberware, hackers plugging into decks, and AV's patrolling our city streets.
