Champions Online is a superhero action-MMORPG for the Xbox 360 and PC. It is being developed by Cryptic Studios, the makers of City of Heroes.

Overview

 Champions will be a subscription based MMORPG, where the player explores a highly styled comic book inspired super-hero themed world. Champions Online is an entirely new world, not to be confused as an adaptation or an expansion from the world of City of Heroes and the problems of paragon city. But will feature an entirely new world with new locations, new villains, and new damsels in distress for your hero to save. Champions will dig deeper into character creation than its “older brother” City of Heroes. Featuring the ability to edit a hero's movement; for instance, a

wolf-like character may choose to leap on all fours rather than on two, a robot may select robotic, jerky movement rather than the average human movements, and a mentalist may choose to float in a lotus position rather than walk. The player may also edit their powers in various ways, including color and form; for example, a heat ray may resemble flames or a force field may have a color specified in the editor.

Heroes will also now have the option to have unique weaknesses and disadvantages, such as being vulnerable to cold. Also, players will custom design their own arch-nemesis in the same fashion as their own hero (creating an entirely new character with their own customizations to their costumes, powers as well as have their own unique back story. Your “arch-nemesis” will appear throughout your own career. If a player defeats his arch-nemesis permanently, they have the option to create a new one or finish their careers without any arch-nemesis at all. One of the biggest change is the complete elimination of any character class or archetype system. All characters can take any skill or power equally, utilizing the player’s entire desire for creativity. The game will also make it easier for a player to spend most of his hero's career as a solo hero if they choose so. The level of your hero will be capped at 50. But like all MMO’s, it will feature special endgame content and gameplay once you have reached the cap.

Champions Online is more action-oriented than City of Heroes, and is being designed to utilize the 360 controls to its highest optimization. Attacks will be mapped to the four buttons, while defensive actions will be mapped to the shoulder buttons. Successful attacks and blocks will increase a power meter, which can unlock more powerful actions, which can be accessed by holding the left trigger to reveal a different button map. In addition, the game will be nearly HUD-less. Death is similar to City of Heroes, where a player may choose to be revived by a teammate or respawn at a neutral site, except respawning does not accrue experience debt. Now the hero's upgrades/armor will be degraded. When equipment hit points reach 0, they cease to function and must be repaired.

In Champions Online, the player is not bound to a single city anymore, but now to the entire world (and beyond)!The player may join various factions around the world, which unlocks faction-specific items, stores, insignias and crafting stations. Regions include urban sprawls, dinosaur-infested islands, underground ruins, and underwater lairs. A special region called "the underground circuit" allows player vs. player competition. Named locations include:
  • The Moon
  • Millennium City, a high tech city built on the ruins of Detroit
  • Lemuria City, an underwater city
  • Qliphotic, a mystical dimension
  • Stronghold, a high level superprison buried in Devil's Head Mesa
  • Unnamed frozen waste in Canada
  • Monster Island
  • Slither Beach
  • Snake Gulch
