I notice the FPS I play in the last few years all happen to have this problem
there are countless times I have to do things all over again
just because I died before I got a checkpoint
Fighting your way out of Makarov's safe house is one example,
so does that Tayari Plaza with a pair of hunters
and the pillar of friggin autumn on Legendary
and the napalm barrel part on SOG, Black Ops
this problem get even more nasty with the two cods thanks to the unlimited enemy spawn
the ways to get over it are neither rush pass enemies for a checkpoint(halos)
nor cower under cover hoping somehow the system grants you a checkpoint(cods)
and this takes away all the fun out of the game

The problem is the alternative to having spaced out checkpoints is having a checkpoint every few steps, thereby taking all the challenge out of the game. Sure that'd be fun for a bit, but eventually without any sense of difficulty you just wouldn't get any satisfaction out of the game.
