Games where the characters are 2D bitmap images (sprites), but the environment and scenarios are made in a 3-Dimensional space. This technique was commonly used on consoles like the PlayStation, Sega Saturn and Nintendo DS. Many 90's First-Person Shooters also used this technique.
Part ad, part game. Advergames are designed to promote a specific brand or product, usually outside the game industry.
Extraterrestrials appear in many video games in a variety of styles. Sometimes they're evil, sometimes they're benevolent, and sometimes they're very similar to humans.
Bats are small, very social flying mammals. They may frequent caves or haunted houses.
Body armor in games acts as additional protection. In most cases, when a player takes damage that would completely affect their health, their body armor reduces the damage taken or takes the damage instead.
Corpses disappear immediately or after a short delay. Often done to help maintain game performance, especially when physics are involved.
A genre of FPS games that are either designed to look and play like 90's shooters or built on game engines from that era.
Bosses are enemies that fight you at the end of a level or at a significant point in the story.
Not all bosses can handle the player by themselves. Many use waves of lesser enemies to fight for them while they rest, and some even let these minions do all the work.
A boss fight is a culminating challenge that pits the player against one or more enemies representing a greater threat and/or difficulty than those previously faced. These scenarios typically feature unique antagonists.
Games that ask the player whether they are sure about the decision that they have just made.
Darkness is used in games to restrict access, increase tension, or just to set a mood. Often the player has access to a light source that can mitigate its effect.
Any weapon that shoots laser and plasma beams or energy bolts rather than conventional bullets.
A door that players must go through to exit the level
Advertisements sometimes appear in game as a spoof on real-life advertisements, or to further envelope the player in the video game world.
The last boss you face in a game, usually representing the final climax of the game.
In games, fire can be an obstacle, a tool, a weapon, or a solution. Just don't play with it...unless you really want to.
Using physical force to damage an opponent, with or without an equipped weapon from a first person perspective.
First-Person is a vantage point that attempts to simulate looking through a game character's eyes. It is most commonly found in first-person shooters, racing games, and visual novels, and to a lesser extent in other genres, such as RPGs, 3D platformers, and adventure games.
Some rooms have faulty lights that flick on and off. Often this is used in horror games to help build an unsettling atmosphere.
Enemies that prefer to keep a distance to the ground, and swoop down occasionally to do some damage.
Foreshadowing is a plot device that allows the creators to leave subtle (or not-so-subtle) hints about future events in the game.
Freeware games are those which have their full versions legally free to download or otherwise obtain.
Games that are designed to inspire the purchase of a specifically branded food product.
General MIDI (also known as GM or GM 1) is a standardized specification for electronic musical instruments that respond to MIDI messages. It is used in the large majority of older DOS and Windows games.
A heads-up display is a graphical overlay of vital information used in most modern games.
More effective than any hospital. These games let you heal damage; ranging from a black eye to a gunshot wound, just by having a snack.
Health is a value that gauges how much damage players can take in a game before they die or pass out. Also known as life in some games. Health is usually represented by a bar or a percentage instead of an exact amount. Found in most non sport games
Hostages exist to be saved, guarded, and occasionally executed.
In-Game Advertising is the placement of advertisements for real-world products within the game, sponsored by companies external to the developer.
