China, now officially known as the People's Republic of China, is an east-Asian nation with a history of government dating back to the seventeenth century BCE. For most of its history, China was ruled by a series of imperial dynasties until the year 1912, when the Qing Dynasty collapsed during the Xinhai Revolution. A republic was founded in place of the imperial government, but the Chinese Civil War broke out in 1927 and wasn't resolved until 1949 when the Communist Party took power and the nation was rechristened the People's Republic of China. The Communist Party remains in control of China to this day.
As a Video Game Setting
China's long and rich history of politics, war, and culture provide ample inspiration for video game developers. Classic Chinese literary works such as Journey to the West, Romance of the Three Kingdoms and The Water Margin have all seen video game adaptations or works inspired by the texts.
Contemporary China also serves as a setting for numerous video games. The country's status as a communist nation and its complicated relationship with western powers has allowed for games that depict modern China from a variety of angles.
