Overview
Cloaking is to become invisible with the aid of magic or technology. It is often seen in games with stealth components as a means to make the player character temporarily undetectable, usually restricted by how much magic or power the user has left.
Examples of Cloaking
Mortal Kombat
In the Mortal Kombat series, the character Reptile has the ability to temporarily turn invisible. This skill makes it more difficult for the opponent to attack or defend, though by the same token, a player controlling an invisible Reptile must also remain aware of his current location.
Metal Gear Solid
The Metal Gear Solid series has a long history of clocking devices. In the original Metal Gear Solid, Otacon is able to maneuver through the base and come to Solid Snake's aid through the use of an optic camouflage device. However, at one point, the player must also contend with a quartet of enemy soldiers that found the other cloaking devices and attempt to ambush Snake in an elevator.
In Metal Gear Solid 3, there is a full camouflage system, in which the pattern of Naked Snake's clothing and face paint affect his camouflage index rating. The higher the rating, the harder it is for him to be detected by enemies.
The Fear is a member of the Cobra Unit that uses special camouflage in his battle against Naked Snake. However, his camouflage burns through his stamina, and he must frequently consume food in order to recharge it. If the player can defeat him by reducing his stamina to nothing, he drops a special Spider camouflage pattern for Snake. This camouflage is particularly strong and allows him to remain undetected while moving at the cost of stamina.
In Metal Gear Solid 4, Snake gains a new type of camouflage called OctoCamo. This special camouflage allows Snake to blend in with his surroundings by taking on the color and pattern of objects in his nearby environment.
Team Fortress 2
In Team Fortress 2, the Spy's arsenal of gadgets includes an invisibility wristwatch. This device makes him completely invisible to the enemy team, save under certain circumstances, such as when he has just been bumped into, shot, or set on fire. The player can keep its energy up by collection ammo spawns around the map. However, while invisible, the Spy's only other available action is use of the disguise kit. The Spy must uncloak in order to attack or reload.
