38 Studios Unveils its First Look at Project Copernicus

#101 Posted by SmilingPig (1337 posts) -

How will they afford all the servers and tech support needed for a mmo?

#102 Posted by jasondesante (603 posts) -

maybe they can live there once they have to sell their houses to pay back their loan

#103 Posted by tourgen (4465 posts) -

looks much less generic than I was expecting.

But will we ever see it?

TOO!!... buddy it's too, not to!.... TOO little TOO late! and TOO bad!... Haha! The grammar Nazi strikes again!!

Haha, I know how you feel. Incorrect use of to/too, your/you're, and so on always drive me insane.

Agreed.

So pretty

#106 Posted by Rawson (136 posts) -

I can't wait for this game to be declared the new WoW Killer.

No, for reals this time! Because, you see, this one will be familiar like WoW, but it's totally different because it'll have public quests Conan storylines rifts Elder Scrolls "action" gameplay. Can't wait to pre-order this one!

#107 Posted by Seeric (149 posts) -

Considering bland sidequests were a major complaint leveled at Kingdoms of Amalur, if the same issue arises with this game I can't decide if it would make the game horrible because sidequests make up the vast majority of the time spent in most MMORPG's or if it would be a less noticeable issue since sidequests tend to be exceedingly dull in MMORPG's anyway.

Jesus, the cynicism for this game is insane.

I think your being a little to sensitive about it.

The internet is full of haters, and haters...

They're gonna hate.

Personally, I hope this game is commercially and critically successful. I feel the same way about the Elder Scrolls Online. Though to be honest, a part of me also has serious misgivings about the traditional MMO genre, especially fantasy-based ones. Who knows? Maybe these developers will surprise us.

#112 Posted by Arkasai (701 posts) -

If I still played WoW I might be interested in something like this, especially considering the next WoW expansion is Panda Land, and the Old Republic didn't do so hot. As it is though this game isn't anywhere on my radar...not with Diablo 3 and Guild Wars 2 being as fun as they are here and now.

So... if I am watching this trailer right, I'm seeing cel shading in parts of this right?

#114 Posted by Scodiac (470 posts) -

Well, I certainly like the look of the world. Looks like they're continuing with the art style they've established in Reckoning. Interested in seeing more of the game.

#115 Posted by cmblasko (1191 posts) -

@byterunner: Not that I am trying to justify blind cynicism, but given the surrounding circumstances I can understand where the less-than-ideal reactions are coming from.

It looks great, even better if this can reasonably run at or around 60 FPS. Skeptical about no game play, though; that is worrisome. Hopefully they can get something to market soon then streamline the studio substantially.

I dunno man. Being cynical and hating are two different things, IMHO. We're talking about a game being delivered by a studio that can't replay it's loans, so doesn't pay it's employees, bounces a huge cheque, burns $4 million a month, and so will somehow need another $48 million before this even comes to fruition. How is cynicism about this insane? I'd argue the opposite, you're completely insane, or at least naive, to not be cynical about this...

PS. For the record, the footage in this trailer looked interesting to me, and I sincerely hope 38 finds some way to succeed with this...I just don't see it happening realistically.

It looks like they have really been shooting for the moon. That footage looks like the world itself that they've created is amazing. However, I think it's unlikely that they'll be able to deliver a polished, bug-free product in terms of the gameplay and content that goes into that beautiful world. Because of their financial problems and poor management, they are going to start to lose employees and they will have to take shortcuts to deliver the game soon in order to try and start earning subscription money before their loan money runs out. That's a recipe for ho-hum, average reviews, which is basically a disaster for an MMO with a budget this large in an MMO market that is oversaturated already.

@Dagbiker: I feel sorry for the guys who are still there. A couple mid level managers and a small team of low-paid designers (who called out sick to play D3). You thought the E3 deadlines were tough, imagine the governor calling you and saying a demo needs to be on his desk in 24 hours.

Yah, same, at least if EA buys your company, you would know if you didn't have a job in a day. But this must be hell.

#123 Posted by ShiftyMagician (2129 posts) -

The environments seem okay visually to me (though it doesn't excite me at all), but holy hell does that music bore me to sleep personally. That's my one subjective gripe with the trailer at the moment.

#124 Posted by GNitro (11 posts) -

If it is action oriented combat like KoA: R, I'm down.... if it is like WoW or SWTOR combat... count me out. TERA Online has spoiled me in to not wanting anymore of the generic MMO combat.

#125 Posted by PandaShake (388 posts) -

Some of the environments look incredibly detailed. It's one of the few moments where the environment actually looks close to its concept art. Hope they'll pull through.

#126 Edited by Deusoma (3005 posts) -

For some reason, the part that sticks out to me is that they're still not admitting it's called "Kingdoms of Amalur Online". Seeing "Project Copernicus" at the end of the trailer made me snicker. I sure hope this is good, 38 Studios are good people, they deserve a more decided victory than Reckoning.

#127 Posted by PXAbstraction (337 posts) -

Yep, looks like Yet Another Fantasy MMO.

There have been Korean MMOs that have done that kind of action style combat. Cabal for example utilizes a timing oriented combo system that is kinda reminiscent of music game mechanics or Squall's Limit Break in Final Fantasy VIII and it gets harder to time the longer the combo.

Granted, if this game does have Reckoning's combat mechanics infused with it I wonder how they are actually going to balance that out in a persistent MMO setting.

I like the music a lot. Dunno why. I think my iPhone makes the wind section seem a little off and it's that little off-news that makes me like it.

What do you think?

Glad they showed this given that taxpayers are on the hook for it. Still we didn't see anything that might actually suggest how it will feel to the player or more critically how characters might look.

Looks pretty nice but nothing unique and certainly nothing shown remotely worth a seven years wait, if anything it looks what would have been amazing 5-6 years ago.

odds Copernicus is ever released by 38 -~45%

odds that it's a breakeven venture and 38 stays afloat ~5%

odds that it's a smash success ~0.01%

I hope they succeed but I won't be buying it. Nothing personal, I'm not an MMO person.

Turbine's having a job fair next week. I've got a couple friends who've worked there for years and not missed a check. You know, in case there was anyone out there who liked getting paid on a regular basis for working on an mmo.

@Beomoose: Yeah, sorry, those were two separate thoughts (I feel bad for the wasted tax payers' money / company should have more after 7 months).

On another note, I bet if someone had asked me a week ago if I thought government investing in video games and start-ups was a good idea, I would have said yes. This situation really puts a bad light on that though. If they're going to invest in games they really should make a point to learn more about the industry (would a knowledgeable investor give money to an unproven company whose first game is an mmo?).

I'm not trying to hate (which sounds like it would be for no reason), but between the music and the world footage this could not look more like every other thing I've ever seen than it does so far.

#139 Posted by ptys (1933 posts) -

Although the music is pretty generic and it kind of reminds me of Fable/Wow I hope they can put something unique together for the sake of the studio.

#140 Posted by Rocospi (262 posts) -

Looks pretty cool, and the scale seems pretty big.

But to this day, I still don't understand why people bother to make MMO's. They're expensive as shit to make and maintain once the servers are up. The projected revenue is almost unpredictable. The subscription scheme is unpopular with most people. Free to play is a scam.

So please enlighten me, why developers spend so much time and resources to make MMOs. I mean, WoW is an exception and was a bit lucky.

#141 Edited by nERVEcenter (172 posts) -

Absolutely gorgeous. Now they need mechanics to back it up. Some people have been asking to combine all the elements of today's specialist MMO's into one great game. Something tells me 38's financial woes won't make it the studio to do that.

#142 Posted by Korolev (1703 posts) -

They've shown some environments - which is a good start. But if this is all they've done till now....

#143 Posted by upwarDBound (654 posts) -

Some cool looking environments though some seemed pretty rough. Too bad it's probably too late to do the studio any good.

#144 Posted by Marz (5648 posts) -

looks nice... but the gameplay is what will determine if it's standard mmo tab target... push cooldowns or something cool and different.

#145 Posted by Lydian_Sel (2483 posts) -

Those sure are some nice looking environments.

Too bad they're in an MMO.

#148 Posted by Sbaitso (531 posts) -

Looks like a fantasy world, a good looking fantasy world at that but man...I just don't know. Right now everything seems to be going against these guys, and not because of outside forces. I just really hope this isn't the only thing they have to show, I hope a real video and real info gets out real quick or I fear they could just be done. And it's always a bummer to see studio's go under, no matter how mismanaged they are. Seems like it happens far too often in the game business.

#149 Posted by Sbaitso (531 posts) -

@Rocospi: Well you're absolutely right about WoW getting lucky in a lot of ways. But I think a lot of developers want to make the same bet WoW did because if they get lucky on that sort of scale the payoff is insane. It's super risky but people always want to chase after whats on top, right? It's just like all the CoD style fps games we've seen the past few years, there's a huge potential if you hit it just right. That's my reasoning anyways.

I would buy this tomorrow.
