As a hardcore FPS fan, I think, for the experience at least, I should try out Counter Strike and see what the whole buzz was about while I was playing Halo 2. I know, I'm going to get raped out of my mind, but still, I could be paying a lot more than $10 for that. My question is, which version should I be going for? I'm more looking for the more popular one, which I assume is 1.6 or should I be getting Source? I understand the hardcore Counter Strike community is more or less against Source, but what say you?

You will have a much better time with Source imo. It's a tough game but once you kind of understand how to play, it's not too bad

All of the hardcore Counter-Strike players will say to get 1.6, but I enjoy Source a lot more.  For one it looks a whole lot better and there seems to be a more decent community.  Well as decent as a the Counter-Strike community can be.

I'm thinking source in the reality that I'm going to be a huge ass noob.
I might just end up getting both, 1.6 will probably run better on my Macbook Pro anyway.

Are their huge differences between them besides the visuals? Or is it just nitpicky stuff that people complain about when they've played something so long that any minor change screws them up.

I don't know of any real gameplay changes, but then again I was never a huge Counter-Strike player.

there's not much difference, besides the physics engine with makes it fun to blow up the barrels and stuff around you. Source also comes with bots (1.6 does not)

i have 1.6, CZ and Source and they're all great. Source is much easier for me and more enjoyable, though 1.6 is much more challenging but still damn fun

They're pretty much the same as far as I know. The only small detail I can remember anyone complaining about was that headshots in Source was slighty easier to get.

Source will run excellently on your Macbook (if you have Windows installed on it).

Also, there are better games you could pick up for that money.

Unfortunately I do not have windows currently installed. I'm still at the dilemma of trying to figure out if it's legal for me to just torrent a windows XP license now that you can't buy them anymore. I need to do that first.

Well I have a copy of Windows XP, however it has already been installed on one of my much older computers that I don't have anymore. I can install it on this computer, but I'll have to go through a lengthy process over the phone so that I can get another license code. Any suggestions?

Aren't there cross over programs that make games more compatible, I only know of them though, not if they're any good. Might be worth looking into.

Eh, if you don't have Windows then you can't play either game, Steam only runs on Windows. And you can still buy XP even directly from Microsoft. I'd also argue the "fuss" of Counter-Strike was existing long before Halo 2 but I guess that's of no consequence, other than keeping your expectations lower for a much more outdated game than you'd think if you compared it to something of the Halo 2 era.

Anyway, I'm sure you'll find it fun still as the core gameplay is solid, while if you've only played games like Halo online it iwill be a very different experience what with the round based play, no respawns, etc. If on the other hand you've played games like Modern Warfare then imagine something like that, only more streamlined and pure. Play with bots a little (there are some great bots to download for 1.6 as well, I think their creator worked on the Source bots even) then hop online. If you have a few friends to show you the ropes it would be better because you'll be destroyed pretty fast before you get the hang of it even though the is rather simplistic. Well, as long as you get a good server that is (and do disable auto-download of content because many are so modded you'll be downloading for ages before you find a few good servers to favorite).

Yeah, I could use Crossover Games, basically lets you play a select number of games on you're mac. However in the long run I think it would be much better to have windows installed on my computer.

You should get source its more popular at this point and a arguably a better game. Also since you have played a lot of fps's it shouldn't be that hard to get into.

The hardcore gamers could say 1.6. I've played both a whole lot, but mostly Source (+2000 hours :/). But I think you should try both. They feel a lot different from each other, and you can (if you get really good) pull single shot kills every time in Source, where 1.6 is a bit more difficult and I've heard a lot of 1.6 players saying Source is too easy.  I prefer Source, but its what fits you.

Start with Source. The recoil is much more controllable, and that's huge in CS.

I have a word of warning though, it's okay to try it, but watch out. I played from Beta to about a year ago, and that game will eat away at your time more than even WoW. While I was Invite, I would spend nearly 40 hours per week practicing....for a video game.

You guys are crazy, source isn't even close to 1.6

One example is the bullet sprays are random in source, so you can't pull down when firing to get a predictable spray. It sounds ridiculous, but if you've ever played 1.6 competitively you'd understand.

Another is visual hit queues are almost non-existent in source. In 1.6 you will usually always know when you hit someone by way of blood or sparks(if they have a helmet). This really went a long way in 1.6, because you adjust your strategy on the fly in a game like this based on how much damage you've done to someone.

There are a bunch of other things that source got rid of that turned the Super competitive Counter-strike into a casual FPS. That's not to say Source is terrible, its just a very different game. If you are interested in reviving the awesome competitive-ness that was 1.6, support the upcoming mod CSPromod; A mod that blends source graphics with all the 1.6 gameplay.

Edit: forgot to mention that playing 1.6 right now is a chore. Because 90% of the servers listed are just advertisements. It's really hard to find a server with actual people in it.

You will get your ass torn apart if you buy 1.6 for two reasons.  One, you have been playing Halo which is an extremely watered-down multiplayer compared to CS in terms of difficulty.  Two, the 1.6 are extremely hardcore, why do you think they are playing such an old game that is so fugly by today's standards?  Most will likely know the game inside and out.

Source is your better bet for two reasons as well.  One, there are more people playing it and as such you will have more variety in terms of player skill level and maps (although de_dust2 and cs_office servers are still likely to dominate the servers).  Two, CS:S hitboxes are, arguably, more inclined for newcomers.

I used to be an incredible pubstar at the game (I did leagues but every clan I got with had serious ego issues that would divide the community) so if you have any questions, shoot.  I now play mostly TF2 which is a lot of fun and still requires a lot of skill, but is no where near as competitive as CS:S is (in terms of pubs).

Now if you don't mind getting your ass handed to you, choose 1.6.  Why?  Because, at least for me, the fact I have to sit out makes me play better because I want to avoid sitting out.  If you can handle that and are a quick study, then go for 1.6, going on a kill streak in 1.6 feels much more rewarding than in CS:S, imo.  Also, have a good headset to play with so you can hear footsteps.  Footsteps are much easier to hear with a headset than with speakers.

I played both competitively for years and for someone coming into it, i'd go with Source. However if you are a hard core fps and wanna experience what it was like 10 years ago, go with 1.6; both are ridiculously cheap.

ugh, not counter strike lol... that game is just stressful because you have to be up on all senses, headphones on, leaned closely toward the screen...  I do not recommend you attempt counter strike.

Long ago I was hellbent against source, I was a regular 1.6 nut. Then I stopped playing for a long time, and now whenever I play it's source. Just get source, you'll have a better time.

Just download it via a torrent to skip the lengthy phone process then :)

The people who still play cs 1.6 are the people who has played it for many many years. I think you will get a little less resitance from playing Source

@Gorillawhat:
You can use the same code on like 9 computers without having to get another license.
