I don't know how many of you guys here on GB would be fans of the seminal anime Cowboy Bebop, but it's currently being made into a live-action film-- starring Keanu Reeves. In spite of Reeves' involvement, I spent a lot of time cold-calling Hollywood people in hopes of scoring an interview about the film, and I struck gold: I got to ask a few questions of the script writer himself, Peter Craig. Here's a short bit of the interview:

AV: Had you seen Cowboy Bebop prior to coming onto the project? Is there anything about the series that particularly drew you in?

PC: I had seen the show on "Adult Swim" - but not enough to understand it as well as I do now.  I had seen the ending first, unfortunately.  Then I believe I saw "Honky Tonk Women" next, months later - the episode when Spike first finds Faye in the casino.  I'd seen one of the Ganymede episodes at some point, too - Jet with his old girl.  I remember being very impressed with it, though, even with limited exposure.  I liked the pace, the wide-open space.  I liked the extremely droll sense of humor.  It was unlike anything I'd seen before.

Cowboy Bebop was inspired by early film noir films from the 1950's, and that style of film making is still prevalent today and is easy to replicate in live action films. If the writing and directorial staff keep where the roots of Cowboy Bebop drew inspiration intact while making the film fresh and original, otherwise I could just watch the anime, I think it will turn out fine.

My top 3 fave animes without a doubt. I pray it turns out right since it doesn't have to deal with as many over the top aspects such as DBZ's energy blasts and warring aliens.

I actually like Keanu Reeves as an actor and think he gets too much guff. But I am on the fence for casting him as Spike. I just see him playing it overly serious when Spike is a fairly light hearted, easy going character for the most part.

Love the Cowboy Bebop. I'm most curious about how Spike's hair translates to live action. They need to nail it.

I also want to hear the soundtrack. Without good jazz and blues i'll be extremely disappointed.
