Probably like this, only more so.
Probably like this, only more so.
EA and German developer Crytek officially announced this morning that Crysis 2 is in development. Other than the fact that Crytek's developing and EA's publishing, there's not a ton of specific information about the game itself at this time. We do know that it will be the first game developed on CryENGINE 3, the latest revision of Crytek's proprietary engine, and arguably the source of much of its dark, video-card punishing power. More interesting, though not exactly surprising, is the fact that Crysis 2 is being developed for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in addition to its predecessor's native PC platform. No release date has been given. Check out the full press release below.

Redwood City, Calif. – June 1, 2009 – Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) announced today that it has agreed to a deal extension with Crytek GmbH, the award-winning developers of the Crysis® universe, to publish Crysis 2. Renowned for their technical excellence, artistic craftsmanship and commitment to quality, Crytek is building Crysis 2 on their new state-of-the-art multiplatform game development solution CryENGINE®3 for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system, the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, and the PC.

“The development of Crysis 2 marks a major stepping stone for our studio,” said Cevat Yerli, CEO and President of Crytek. “This is not only the next game in the Crysis franchise, it’s the first title we are developing for consoles and the first title being built on CryENGINE 3. We are excited to have the support of EA Partners again as we work together to make the launch of Crysis 2 a huge event.”

“Nothing speaks more to the success of the EA Partners program than when a studio the caliber of Crytek continues to work with us,” said David DeMartini, Senior Vice President and General Manager of EA Partners. “Crytek is already one of the elite PC development studios in the world and we are excited to have the opportunity to partner with them in bringing their award-winning technology and gameplay to more platforms and a wider audience with Crysis 2.”

Is this where we'll begin to see the PC blow current consoles out of the water?  I have a feeling this will look way better on the PC when it eventually comes out.

Multiplatform. I doubt it will be as resource expensive as the previous crysis.

Hope they continue the streak of Warhead, that game was way better than the original.

Well I loved Crysis and will get Warhead as soon as I'm done with the original (Just got the GTX 260 to run the sucker).

I don't know why the title of this is "Prepare to Weep." Isn't it a good thing that PS3 and Xbox 360 owners get to play (hopefully) another great game?

As badly optimized as Crysis was for the PC (and it was) I don' hold out much hope that it'll run very smoothly on a 360.  Still I hope it does work well.  I'd consider buying it for both if it comes out around the time I upgrade my PC

Bought and played through both Crysis and Warhead. Solid shooters within its genre. Will keep an eye on this one.

Well, I guess we know what they're going to be using to push DX11. Let's just hope this one isn't as buggy and busted as the first one was after the first level.

Why would anyone weep? I mean, they put it on every platform they could. What's there to weep about? Or is this a jab at the game's quality? I can get behind that, but it's hardly weep worthy itself.

I can't see this looking much / any better than Crysis (not that that's bad exactly).  I hope they don't continue the trend of introducing turd monsters / aliens / whatever, half way through and destroying the gameplay.

Only recently was I able to play Crysis 1, cause I just recently got a computer man enough to handle the task of running it on medium graphics settings (bear in mind, this thing is fairly cutting edge as far as gaming laptops go).  Still, Crysis 1 was a blast, hopefully Crysis 2 will be more so.  As long as it's not so incredibly resource-intensive it actually makes my computer melt, I'll check it out.

As long as they don't screw over us PC gamers with a dumb down Crysis that feels like it was designed for the consoles, then I'm cool with this.

SO to someone who didn't play the first game, What do you guys think the results will be of the sequel being multiplatform? I know it was pretty acclaimed on the PC so I don't know what to expect as far as the 360 version. Predictions?

Lol, nice way to bump this old topic back Lawz. Crysis on the consoles will look vastly inferior to the PC version. Let's hope the PS3 version isn't shitty.. Crytek doesn't really have that much experience working with the system.

@L4wz: As if you need a $5000 PC to run Crysis, these days. Even back when it was released, my $1400 computer could run it just fine on high. Now, that system wouldn't cost nearly as much. Also keep in mind that owning a good computer gives you more than just game-playing capability,

But whatever; not about to have an "is it worth it" argument, because I realize the answer to that totally depends on personal need. I just hate the misconception that Crysis absolutely requires a multi-thousand dollar machine to play.
