When Crysis was released, if you didn't have a massive PC rig, you were simply out of luck.

Crytek's Crysis was once the game to show off your PC rig, years before the studio added consoles into its playbook. As a result, console owners never had a chance to see what all the fuss was about, relegated to watching YouTube videos.

That changes next week, with an updated version of the original Crysis coming on October 4 to both Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network next week for $20 (1600 Microsoft Points). This version includes tweaked lighting, support for 3D and other enhancements meant to keep the game looking current.

It'll be interesting to see how Crysis holds up. Maybe some PC owners can drop in some thoughts?

#3 Posted by Vinny_Says (5700 posts) -

i was expecting 40 dollar, but 20 is even better. Crysis had no online multiplayer right?

#4 Posted by squirrelnacho (331 posts) -

Crysis on console and 6 year old hardware? No thanks.

#5 Posted by Trylks (829 posts) -

Excellent news! this way I can play crysis before crysis 2 and keep my crappy computer.

Dunno if I will though, my computer is rather crappy anyway...

#6 Posted by Slaker117 (4838 posts) -

For $20? Sure.

Crysis had multiplayer on the PC but this version of the game will not have multiplayer.

It did have MP and it was actually pretty cool for a while.

So is this a Games on Demand thing, or is 20 dollars the new 15?

Bets on if GB loads up the original Crysis for comparison to the new one? I think they're all afraid of that game.

It had one, but honestly I found it kinda crap. Though I hear the multiplayer expansion Crysis Wars is really good.

Ot: yup, 20's good for me. getting on PSN.

It's kind of jarring to see a graphical comparison of the pc and 360 versions side by side.

"This version includes tweaked lighting, support for 3D and other enhancements meant to keep the game looking current."

You mean it has reduced FOV, view distances and lower resolution textures to make the frame rate playable on the console.

$20? Alright, I'm in. I've always been interested in the original Crysis, not because of the graphics so much but because of the (later?) icy environments. I haven't followed this port at all but I kind of figured it'd be a full priced game, nice surprise.

@cbk486

That's the absolute worst screencap that could've been taken from that trailer, I've seen the rest and it doesn't look nearly as bad as that. Hell, even Uncharted 3 could look like garbage if you took a screencap of the worst graphical detail you could find.

I believe it did.

There is no way this will look as good as it does on a pc, right?

Which one is supposed to look worse? I'm not sure what direction I should raise my fanboy hackles.

I am very impressed with the pricing. I have it on Pc, so no need. Still, that is pretty cool.

Whoa, it's hard to believe that that is the same spot in the game. o_O I have seen some footage on Gamespot lately and it looked really good. They showed the level where you try to get to the harbor, beginning at nightime and then the sun goes up etc. pp. That ran so good and looked so good that I was really looking forward to this.

Same day as my birthday! And the same day as Rage..and 23 days before Battlefield 3. Fuck.

I'm not being facetious or anything. It's a fact that there is very little ram to work with on the consoles. I'm sure the developers really had to think about what was going to be cut in order to keep the game running smoothly.

The trees in Crysis were kind of a big deal in the original game, but if the gameplay is perfectly intact, then it's all good.
#27 Posted by StingingVelvet (569 posts) -

That picture is likely honest because having played Crysis multiple times I can tell you the open areas with massive amounts of vegetation just cannot work on <500MB of RAM. It's just not possible. I expect they have trimmed down the detail in large areas considerably, either that or added tunnel connection.

In any case the most interesting part of this release for me will be seeing all the console gamers who bashed Crysis for just being a pretty face suddenly realize that it's actually a very good game that earned those 9.0 reviews.

Dude, the point he's trying to make is that the console version is going to look FAR worse than the PC version. I don't get why console owners get upset when someone points out that their 6 year old hardware is not up to the spec with the latest and greatest on the PC.

Look for yourself, you can see draw-in but I think most of the stuff seems to be in there, especially foliage. Ok, we will have to see next week I guess.

#32 Posted by Scalec (71 posts) -

Oh well I guess that the studio will get a few more bucks if they do this.

#33 Posted by cbk486 (181 posts) -

@Rabid619: It still looks pretty decent for a console game, but I was just pointing out that concessions had to be made. Gameplay is higher on my priority list than graphics, and so far it seems like that aspect of Crysis translates well.

Oh I have absolutely no doubts that it will look far worse, I'm not frustrated with anything like that. What I get frustrated by is people taking the worst possible example they can and putting it out there like it's the standard for how the rest of something will be. Seems to me like people do it for the reaction, and to basically light a fire under peoples asses. Clearly it works, though.

$20 sounds fair.

Console gamers should be rejoicing. Crysis is significantly better that Crysis 2 imo. Much more sandboxxy. Awesome price too. Enjoy console gamers!

@Slaker117: Just wanted to point out that I didn't take these. I got this picture from /r/gaming.

@BlatantNinja23: No, it'll probably have a full 1000gs. Its a full retail game sooo....

#42 Posted by Meowshi (2911 posts) -

For as great as the gameplay for this game supposedly is, all anyone seems to talk about is how the graphics look.

Keep it classy, PC gamers.

Yeah I got what you were going for, no doubt concessions are going to be made to bring the game over, but in some areas they'll be much more noticeable, like the example you provided. Like I said I'm just curious about this game, I'm not a PC guy so it'll be nice to see how it is, though it's still a fairly straightforward FPS, and I'm kinda burnt out on that kind of game haha. Curiosity will win out in this case, though.

Does this include Warhead?

#45 Posted by Jimbo (9804 posts) -

"Crytek's Crysis was once the game to show off your PC rig..."

It's still up there.

I think $20 is a reasonable price. Graphics aside, the first half of the game is legitimately good, and different enough to most console shooters to make it still worth bothering with. Obviously it goes to shit once the 'I'm going to fly straight at you like I'm in Serious Sam' monsters turn up, just like Far Cry did.

Except the fact that PC gamer's are still talking about the graphics and not the gameplay. I wonder why that is?

#48 Posted by MordeaniisChaos (5730 posts) -

@Rabid619: On it's own it looks fine maybe, but if that is really the same exact spot then it looks miles worse than the PC version. Not surprising, or really a big deal, but if you can play this game on a PC, do so. lol.

#49 Posted by wealllikepie (757 posts) -

Lol id say graphically its superior to crysis 2 so itll be holding up quite well :) Gameplay might seem really clunky now thoughh, especially after crysis 2

I guess I am one of the few people who enjoyed the back end more than the first half. I got sick of killing the same five Koreans over and over again.
