Yeah, that seems odd to me...Even Super Mario Brothers had in-game cut-scenes at the end of each Bowser level to tell you you had the wrong princess...
What about the Sierra Online adventure games series for DOS? Surely they predate the majority of games mentioned and they are rife with exposition delivering cutscenes.
