Sega hasn't done much worth getting excited about with the Virtual On series in a while, but like so many other of Sega's franchises from its arcade heyday, the series continues to inspire legions of fans to pine for the past.

One such fan is Dan Clarke, an artist over at JP74.com--and fellow mech aficionado. He's produced a series of rather awesome Virtual On posters for your perusal. Clarke hasn't yet committed to producing prints of the posters (though he should!), but they're currently the perfect size for mech-ing up your mobile device.

Makes you wonder what happened to the whole mech genre, anyway. Have we just moved on? Sega tried to revitalize Virtual On on Xbox Live Arcade, but that didn't go anywhere. Perhaps our savior is Capcom's Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor, which swaps the controller of a thousand sons (and buttons) for a completely controllerless experience, relying on Microsoft's Kinect device.

    Gulp.

Check out the rest of Clarke's posters on his website.

Bah, why'd you have to remind me about the new Steel Battalion? I really want to bust out my old controller for something. Anything.

Im sad that the trailer for the new Mechwarrior reboot game was the last thing we saw out of that "game" a couple years ago.  We could do with a really well done Mech game based on the Classic Battletech/Mechwarrior canon.

I really enjoyed Virtual On on the Saturn. For whatever reason, Oratorio Tangram didn't have the same draw on the Dreamcast, so I wasn't into getting it on XBLA. I guess the formula just can't sustain more than one game.

Some sick dome-explosions in that original, though.

Double Fine is also working on Trenched, which is sort of a mech game, right?

Really looking forward to Armored Core 5. People just write off that series all too often.

I am so excited for this game. It looks - as they said back when mech games were popular - totally radical.

I'm looking forward to Armored Core 5, being a big fan of the series. Hawken also looks great. And whatever happened to that MechWarrior reboot that was supposed to be happening? They released that teaser trailer, and then nothing.

What happened to to the mech genre?  Its called Super Robot Wars.  That is a train that will never run out of steam.

I know what you mean, I felt the exact same way at the time, but I eventually came around and began to see the merits of the DC game.

I play the original Saturn game with this baby :)
