Was listening to a playlist of old Bombcast clips and came across this gem about Dan's band and musical ability. I thought it was pretty funny to hear a bit of smack talk about the latest hire to the Bomb crew. Here's hoping we finally see Dan pick up a bass as part of an UPF or something.

Yeah. It's kind of nice to hear Ryan berating the guy who in some ways is stepping into his shoes. I'm sure he'd be loving this thread! :)

I'm not sure about his musical ability, but I do know Dan looks perpetually surprised.

Does anyone have a sample of this music? I believe we need to judge for ourselves.

I really need to hear some of Ryckert's music now.

Isn't Alex also a former musician? With Jeff on vocals Giant Bomb should cut a rock and/or rap-metal album.

That's actually in reference to something. I think someone wrote something bitching about one of Dan's reviews and called him a failed musician, but Dan's not a musician. The guy looked up his name and apparently found another Dan Ryckert who was a musician or something.

EDIT: It was the director of that terrible "Noobz" movie. He didn't like Dan's review of it and called him a "failed musician" on twitter.

Obviously, you guys never read his Howlin' Game Informer profile:

Dan Ryckert is an influential American blues singer, guitarist and harmonica player.

With a booming voice and looming physical presence, Ryckert is commonly ranked among the leading performers in electric blues; musician and critic Cub Koda declared, "no one could match [Ryckert] for the singular ability to rock the house down to the foundation while simultaneously scaring its patrons out of its wits." Many songs popularized by Ryckert—such as "Smokestack Lightnin'," "Back Door Man" and "Spoonful"—have become standards of blues and blues rock.

At 6 feet, 6 inches (198 cm) and close to 300 pounds (136 kg), he was an imposing presence with one of the loudest and most memorable voices of all the "classic" 1950s Chicago blues singers. Ryckert's voice has been compared to "the sound of heavy machinery operating on a gravel road". Although the two were reportedly not that different in actual personality, this rough edged, slightly fearsome musical style is often contrasted with the less crude but still powerful presentation of his contemporary and professional rival, Muddy Waters, to describe the two pillars of the Chicago Blues representing the music.

I don't know why I've referenced that thing like 5 times since his arrival.

That is a reference from him slamming the movie Noobz, then having Jason Mewes call him a failed musician

It wasn't Jason Mewes. It was some douche named Blake something. Ah, it doesn't really matter. Anyways some how that crappy movie got the guy from Starship Troopers to play himself, Robin Williams daughter, Zelda and Bill Bellamy. Even Adam Sessler got roped in that mess. Don't watch that movie.

The legend of Dan Ryckert continues.

He drummed in Headboard, Glenn Rubenstein's ska/rap/funk band where Jeff was the second vocalist. And first pimp.

If it were anyone else saying this, it would be taken as an insult. I would be honored to be insulted by these gentlemen if I were Dan Ryckert.

@the_nubster: Ya, Jeff was in multiple bands. Midnight Brown being the last one. You can find all their albums online for free. Not illegally either, they legitimately gave them away for free.

I don't know if you listen to the Bombcast much, but he talks about it occasionally plus he still performed with Midnight Brown while he was at Gamespot. He recently (I wanna say in the last month) talked about how he would leave his bands CDs (I think it was when he was in Headboard) in music shops and Brad mentioned how that didn't make sense because he wouldn't make any money off of it.

My favorite song by Midnight Brown, all time, is Cop Knife, but there's a lot of good ones.

Next Midnight Brown CD he should collaborate with Dan. I'd love to hear that- assuming Dan actually does play music. It's hard to tell what with all his Andy Kaufman like humor about himself.

@cornbredx: I'd heard Jeff was in bands, basically, from the podcast, but I have literally no idea where to get the music. Google didn't give me much last time I tried. His "roommate" is Brendan, right?

PS. that lingering shot of the window around 0:45 is creepy as shit.

PPS. oh god that's Jeff what the fuck

    @the_nubster: Ya, I know. It's awesome.

You can find Midnight Brown officially here

Enjoy. All their albums are there and don't worry about it being stealing or whatever; Jeff is who hosts that site.

Edit: Oh and ya, I think Brendan was his room mate, but I don't think he has a room mate anymore.

Dan recently said on a podcast or something that he has no musical talent, so I don't think he's any good at any instrument.

Yeah, bass 'player' just about says it all.
