Traverse the nine circles of hell in EA's third-person action game based on Dante Alighieri's epic poem The Divine Comedy.

Gameplay

The game has been described as: "Button for button, the controls are identical to God of War." Not only that but there are other similarities to God of War as well, enemies drop orbs when they are defeated and you can find orbs in chests as well, which are opened by holding the circle button. Even combat is very similar with the same control scheme. The main thing that sets this game apart from God of War is the subject matter which has been stated to be " altogether more unpleasant..." where twisted creatures burst from doorways, lava spews from inverted crosses and bottomless fiery pits yawn deep beneath your feet."

La Divina Commedia

Dante's Inferno is a concept in the book "La Divina Commedia", which translates to "The Divine Comedy." The book is considered to be one of the greatest literary works in history, and established the Tuscan dialect of Toscana as the Italian standard dialect. It was written by Dante Alighieri. In the book, Dante traverses the nine levels of Hell (in Dante's universe, Hell is shaped like a cone that faces downwards), guided by his friend, Vergilius (Virgil). This duo has also been the source of inspiration for Devil May Cry's Dante and Vergil.

The story starts out with Dante lost in a dark wood (Dante Alighieri was going through a tough time at this point in his live, having just been banned from Firenze [Florence], and as such this was probably symbolic for suicide). He is saved however, by Vergilius, who will guide him through Hell.

The nine levels of Hell:

First Circle

The First Circle of hell is Limbo, where the willful sinners are. Basically all the pagans that did not know of god, live here, there is Socrates, Homer, Virgil and Saladin amongst others. Without baptism they live in a deficient form of heaven, where there are some flowers and green fields, as well as a white castle. Minos resides at the end of this circle, and as the first judge of Hell separates the levels in which the damned shall go to, by the amount of times he circles them with his tail.

Second Circle

The second circle of hell is for those who committed the sin of lust. Figures of men and women are swept away by the winds, being a symbol of unwinded and needless passions.

Third Circle

The third circle of hell is for gluttons. Here they are forced to lie in a slush made up of freezing rain, black snow, and hail. This is as punishment for the garbage they made on Earth when consuming all of their food.

Fourth Circle

The fourth circle of hell is for the avaricious and the slanderers of wealth. The avaricious are forced to push massive stones towards the center of the circle and the slanderers are force to hoard them up against the wall, in an antithetical or ironic punishment.

Fifth Circle

The wrathful and the lazy inhabit this circle, which has the river Styx run through it. In the surface of the waters the wrathful fight for all eternity while the lazy gurgle in the bottom. In order to go lower into hell Dante must cross the city Dis (of the damned) which is guarded by fallen angels.

Sixth Circle

Heretics and atheists lie in tombs in this level. Heretics are buried alive for eternity, while atheists are simply dead.

Seventh Circle

The Minotaur guards the entrance to the seventh Circle and this circle is reserved for the violent. It has three rings.
  • Outer Ring: Houses those that were violent to others' property, they are dipped in a river of boiling blood, according to their sins, and have arrows fired at them from Centaurs if they attempt to leave
  • Middle Ring: Houses the suicides, who live in eternal pain as thorny trees. Those that took the means through which life was sustained (in modern terms, those that commit euthanasia) are forever chased by vicious dogs in this circle as well.
  • Inner Ring: Houses the blasphemers (they are considered violent against God), the sodomites (homosexuals), and the usurers (those that lend money, it was considered a mortal sin to do so in the middle ages). They are forever in a desert filled with fiery sand while fire flakes rain from the sky

Eight Circle

This circle houses the dishonest. Malebolge is its name (evil pockets/ditches). People are thrown into the  different holes according to their sins. The following are the different holes:

  • Pimps and Seducers
  • Flatterers (ass kissers) are steeped in excrement
  • Those who committed simonies (priests and popes who gave salvation in exchange of money)
  • Sorcerers and False Prophets
  • Corrupt politicians
  • Hypocrites
  • Thieves
  • Fraudulent Advisers
  • Sowers of discord amongst men (war mongers and such)
  • Falsifiers (alchemists, counterfeiters, perjurers, etc.)

Ninth Circle

The last circle of hell is guarded by giants. This circle is reserved for traitors, they are encased in an eternal lake of ice called Cocytus. The sinners here are divided amongst their actions, the first:
  • Those that reside in Caina. Named after Cain, this round is reserved for those who betrayed their kin and are buried in the ice up to their necks.
  • Those that reside in Antenora. This round is reserved for those who betrayed political party or city, and are buried even deeper and cannot move their necks.
  • Those that reside in Ptolemeica. This round is reserved for those who betray their guests. They are buried half of their face in and when they cry their tears freeze their eyes and shut them together. They are not allowed the comfort of tears.
  • Last is Judecca. Named after Judas Iscariot, those that reside here are completely encased in ice, and contorted in inconceivable positions.
  • In the center there is Satan, with three heads, each chewing on a prominent sinner, and forever encased waist down in ice. He tries to set himself free with his wings but the wind he creates is ever colder and prevents the lake from unfreezing.

Differences between the novel and the game

So far it has been confirmed that the game will take place 150 years chronologically before the original date. Dante will now be a Crusade veteran in search of his long lost love Beatrice who has been taken by the Devil. Another difference is the combat-intensive and violent gameplay. In the book Dante never has to defend himself or fight off demons. Even though there are times when he is in trouble, other beings protect him and keep him safe from harm.

Known Information

  • The game supposedly runs at a solid 60 FPS.
  • Dante Aligheri, the Florentine poet that the game is based upon, has been turned into a “muscular six foot knight with magic powers” to suit the tone of the game. Dante is fighting his way through Hell to save his lost love Beatrice, who has been murdered and wrongly sent to the underworld.
  • One of the first boss encounters takes place in “Limbo," an area of lost souls who are agonizingly close to God but can never reach Him due to a life of non-believing. It’s here that Dante fights Death himself and steals his magical scythe before plunging into the underworld.
  • The game shares the exact same control scheme as God of War, even down to Circle being used to open chests.
  • The game's artist Wayne Barlowe was chosen because of his work on Barlowe’s Inferno, a collection of images based on Dante’s poem.
  • Structurally, the game is designed to take the player through the nine circles of Hell. The first circle, Limbo, is where you will encounter Death and move through the increasingly more horrific areas. Circle 5, “The Wrathful," is where violent people are forced to endlessly fight each other. The game will culminate in Circle 9, presumably with a massive boss fight against Beelzebub himself.

Controversy

During E3 2009 nearly 20 people appeared outside of the Los Angeles Convention Center in order to protest "Dante's Inferno." Presumably these were protesting on religious grounds, with signs saying things such as "Hell is not a Video Game" and "EA = Electronic Anti-Christ." Initially, even the Los Angeles Times reported, and later updated, that the demonstrators came from a church in Ventura County. Later the Associated Press revealed that the protesters were hired by EA through a viral marketing agency as a publicity stunt.

To compound this issue, the Christian community became displeased over how they were portrayed. Margaret Cabaniss of InsideCatholic.com said:

"It's been clear for a while now that the entertainment industry views Christians on the whole as priggish, thin-skinned fun-killers."

Andy Kirchoff of CatholicVideoGamers went even further to say:

"Gamers of all varieties will buy this product if it's, well, actually a good game. So instead of engaging in a shamelessly anti-Christian stunt to promote your poor excuse of a product, maybe you ought to work on making this game, you know, something better than a blatant God of War rip-off and make it, ya know, something worthwhile?"
