    Dante's Inferno Video Review 21

A much bigger shadow looms over what could have been a great game if it wasn’t for some frustrating moments and an anticlimactic ending. It is hard to take Dante's Inferno as a new IP as right from the beginning Visceral Games have spoken about the inspiration that they took from the God of War series, and man does it show. The main protagonist, Dante, has the same red that when he swings his Scythe blend into his figure making him look like another Greek god that has red paint on his body. How...

    Trapped in purgatory 1

First and foremost, if you are an avid fan of The Divine Comedy, you are going to hate what EA has done to their Dante’s Inferno game. It is as blistered and altered and transformed from the original poem as you feared. I’ve joked before about video gamizing in the past, but Dante’s Inferno really raises the bar to downright sacrilegious levels. But if you avoid taking personal offense to how Dante’s Inferno butchers the legendary work that is The Divine Comedy (and for that matter, the legenda...

    Dante's Inferno Review 0

There's no shortage of hack 'n' slash games that have already appeared on the market this year but none have been quite as shocking as Dante's Inferno, both in build up and in content. It's not the biblical haven and hell that sets this game apart, instead it's a fifty foot naked Cleopatra with mouths for nipples that spurt demonic unbaptised babies and an achievement for killing said babies. To give a little context; Dante's Inferno is an adaptation Dante Alighieri's poem "Divine Comedy", in wh...

Decent, But Not Worth the Money 0

Dante was a poet who wrote a long piece on Hell. However, in Visceral Games' newest title, Dante is not so much a poet but, instead, is a brutish thug who can slaughter the minions of Hell with few problems. In reality, Dante was a skinny, waifish little dude...but in the game, he is a huge brute. The game is God of War in everything but name, but is it fun?Dante was a Crusader here. His wife, Beatrice, made a deal with the Devil that he would be faithful during the Crusades ---- and she...

    Review - Dante's Inferno 3

Gamers are incredibly attached to their favorite video game franchises and are quick to defend them at a moment’s notice on some unknown discussion forum. So when video game journalists start comparing two games together (Or when they use their favorite buzz word ‘clone’) fans rise together akin to a tidal wave to crush any chance the game has to create its own niche in the industry. In this case Dante’s Inferno is the victim as the God...

    God of Emptiness 1

Let's clear this out of the way now: yes, this game is almost a wholesale imitator of God of War. OK, then. Let's move onSo like most games based on fourteenth century literature, Dante's Inferno takes many liberties with its source. For starters, Dante is now Crusader who fights off Death and steals his scythe. And he managed to talk Beatrice into getting it on with him by using the old "I'm shipping off to war tomorrow" trick. So promises are made, promises are broken and lo and behold, Dante ...

One way ticket to Hell 1

It’s rare for video games to look to the literary world for direct inspiration, and you can guarantee there were plenty of eyebrows raised with the announcement of Visceral Games’ brutal action title, Dante’s Inferno. One man’s journey through the Nine Circles of Hell, as depicted in Dante Alighieri’s epic literary masterpiece The Divine Comedy, doesn’t exactly lend itself to the hack and slash genre. But if you think about it, it makes perfect sense. The Divine Comedy’s vivid imagery of Hell an...

    Review: Dante's Inferno 0

I was looking forward to Dante's Inferno.  Having been a big fan of Visceral's previous game, Dead Space, I was anxious to see what they threw at us next.  I had followed all the video previews and trailers closely.  There's something enthralling about a good b-game, and that is what Dante's Inferno is to me.  I have never played the supposedly superior God of War series, although I think I will play the third entry when it is released.  After picking up Dante's Inferno at m...

Extremely imitative but interesting in its own ways 0

Dante’s Inferno places you in the shoes of Dante, reimagined as a warrior from the Crusades instead of the author of the Divine Comedy (why they didn’t just rename the character...?) on which the game is loosely based. He commits several sins in his while he is out fighting with the others, chief among them the act of adultery. This mistake causes his wife Beatrice to be killed, and her soul to be condemned to Hell. I guess this is due to a promise he made her, but it’s never really made clear. ...

Good start however weak second half 0

Dante’s inferno is the second game to come from Dead space creators Visceral games. The game loosely follows the 14 century poem the Divine Comedy. In this the poem follows the tale of a crusade solider called Dante and his journey via the nine circles of hell. However in the game it’s Dante’s main aim to rescue his lover’s soul from the devil himself. There is a very brief tutorial for the game which finishes when Dante is killed and then you encounter your first boss fight of the game, wit...

These are often massive tales of vicious battles, or independent hero’s saving villages. There’s blood, woman, philosophy, boatloads of booze, seedy politics, backstabbing, dragons and ...

With Great Vengeance and Furious Anger... 1

Many cinema-goers may recall a little-known film called “Pulp Fiction”.   In it, Samuel L. Jackson’s character, Jules, often repeats a made-up bible verse; a real showstopper, talking about “the weak” being shepherded through “the valley of darkness”, and striking down those who attempt to “destroy his brothers.   It’s at the end of the film that we realize that Jules really doesn’t know what the verse means, that he says it merely for the theatrics, but his trials and tribulations have caused h...

Dante’s Inferno: Review      This game has been called an obvious clone of the infamous God of War series, taking a different perspective on a famous, half millennium old story about a man who delves into the realms of hell, does this game just take more then it gives or does it do something to give itself its own identity.      The story begins with seeing the main protagonist, Dante, sewing a cross onto his chest showing his past sins, starting with the raid of Acre, while here Dante was...

Late Bird Reviews: Dante's Inferno 0

Okay, so if you know anything about this game and what it’s like, then you know that it is a mimic of God of War. I was anticipating the games to be similar but the gameplay mechanics are so close that referencing or comparing it to God of War in this review is unavoidable. In the end, will it be as good as the Sony juggernaut or will it have something else to offer?  StoryThis is something of a ranting question, but why did the main character have to be Dante himself? Dante Alighieri was...

    Dante's Inferno Review - PS3 2

Visceral Games' latest release, Dante's Inferno, is most certainly a work of inspiration and borrowed ideas. The plot of the game, based loosely on the 14th century poem of the same name, sees Dante descend through the nine circles of hell in search of his lover Beatrice. Though Visceral's interpretation of the poem won't be winning any awards for literary excellence, it does provide us with believable motivation for Dante, and remains intriguing enough to hold our attention until the end.   ...

“Derivative” is a term that’s perhaps used too often in reviews. I would argue that a good 90% or more of modern day video games are derivative of something that came before. Rare is the truly original title, and rarer still is the truly original title that’s any fun to play. When it comes to Dante’s Inferno, what you’ll hear again and again is that it’s derivative of God of War – so derivative, in fact, that some would claim it isn’t too far from being a pure, unabashed clone. In reality, Dante...

    Dante's Inferno 0

The Divine Comedy, composed with thoughtful consideration over thirteen years, is wholly abused and exploited to make a video game full of tits and demons—but as long as you don’t try to take it too seriously, Dante’s Inferno is an entertaining experience. Visceral did a great job capturing the setting described in The Divine Comedy, and the enemies that you encounter are well designed and tie back to the source material. When it comes to combat, there isn’t really any innovation and while it su...

    Straightforward but fun 0

There's a certain gleeful abandon in Dante's Inferno. Throughout the whole game, I got this feeling that this game was developed by a committee of executives who really hate folks like Joseph Lieberman and wanted to create a game that would blatantly piss in their Cheerios. In that regard, they definitely succeeded, as Dante's Inferno is a veritable checklist of all the things that would upset or horrify a strict conservative. There's nudity. You kill non-baptized babies (seriously, the worst mo...

I know nothing of The Divine Comedy, but I have to assume that the poem never had Cleopatra excreting unbaptized children from her mouth-nipples that have tongues.  Or maybe it does. I don't know. But regardless of accuracy the concept of taking the nine circles of hell and turning them into game levels is so simple, yet genius an idea that I'm surprised there isn't more of it.  The gist is that upon returning from the crusades, Dante finds his wife murdered and her soul gets carried off by Luci...

One Hell of A Game 0

Dante’s Inferno is one hell of an interesting game. Based on the first part of a fourteenth century of a set of poems by Dante Alighieri called The Divine Comedy, the poem follows Dante’s journey through the afterlife from hell (Inferno) purgatory (Purgatorio) and finally heaven (Paradiso). During the Inferno he visits the 9 levels of hell guided by the Greek poet Virgil. Besides the visual descriptions in the poem the similarities between the poem and game end there, the Dante in the poem is a ...

Dante's Inferno Review: Welcome to Hell 0

Dante's Inferno is an action game which can charitably be described as being similar to God of War. The game places you in the role of a crusader named Dante as he returns home to find his love murdered and her soul taken to hell. You will enter hell in pursuit of rescuing her and journey through the 9 circles of hell from the poem, hence the games name. The game play is remarkably like God of War, however it lacks the deep combos or strong narrative. What it does provide are some interesting ar...

early highs lead to slow fizzles 0

Making a game about hell it self is a large undertaking. Making a game supposedly influenced by the most respected work of literature on the subject of hell is an even bigger more daunting task.   Dante’s Inferno claims to be based around the general concept and work by Dante Alighieri on his Inferno work. I have read and become a fan of the original 14 century poem inferno (Part of the much larger work the Divine Comedy) and I found it to be all at once enthralling, disturbing and beautiful ...

    A Very Fun Ripoff 0

You've heard it a million times - Dante's Infero is a ripoff of God of War.  But is this really a bad thing? The latter has brought us hours of super-fun combat mixed with engaging cinematics and an addictive upgrade system.  The difference with Dante's Inferno is that it swaps ancient Greece with the depths of Hell. If all of the above sounds enticing, then run, don't walk to your nearest B&M/online retailer and get yourself a copy of this game.   Having beaten and enjoyed all three chapter...

    Dante's Inferno Review 0

By - Craig H.Dante’s Inferno follows the first part of Dante Alighieri’s poem, The Divine Comedy. The source material for Dante’s Inferno was almost tailor made for a video game. The Divine Comedy is an amazing piece of literature and thankfully the developers did not try to change or add too much to it. The story for the game is fairly simple. Players take the role of Dante as he travels through Hell to save (and absolve) his love, Beatrice, which he has damned through the sins of his life. Dan...

    Hella Rad 0

The Third Crusade's Kratos God of War took the third person action brawler and made it something new. Dante's Inferno takes God of War and... that's about it. It's not as polished as God of War, the fighting system is simplified, and the setting is roughly based on the Hell envisioned by Dante Alighieri in 1321 rather than roughly based on the entirety of Greek mythology. In spite of the rough patches, and perhaps because of the setting, it was a huge amount of fun.  Written 650 or so years...

    Twas a good game... 0

The thing was ridiculously short though. As I have read the divine comedy though I found it terribly dissatisfying as it bore little to no resemblance to the actual story. But I suppose that's to be expected how could you market a game based on philosophy? It was a satisfying game to play, short though, once again, little to no replay value. God Of War is definitely a better choice for a game of this type....

    Wonderful! 0

This game is "Bad to the Bone" and for once I don't mean that in a bad way.  I keep hearing everyone stomp a mud hole into this game because it reminds people too much of another game.  Well, as long as everything works, and the game its self is good than that's all that matters.  That is what happens on Dante's Inferno.  The cut scenes are bizarre, but to the point that you cannot turn away, the chatracters are interesting and addictive, and the enemies will make your skin crawl right off your ...

Contrary to what many reviewers have said, I found the game extremely fun and enjoyable. It's a GoW clone for sure but it's an excellent clone. The game has pretty tight controls and some really fun powers and moves. The only part of the game that frustrated me were some of the level designs. There were too many death falls which was totally unnecessary. They also have some pretty annoying timed puzzles but they were few and far in-between, thankfully. Trial and error levels should not b...

    Dante's isn't so bad. 0

OK, firstly. I'd like to say this won't be an in-depth look into Dante's but just a quick summery of the games pro's and con's. I rented this game a couple of weeks back when it was just released. Everyone seemed to be comparing it to God or War, but as for me, i hadn't played a G.O.W game since the very first. I didn't expect a great deal mainly cause too many reviewers drew so much of a comparison to "other" games in the genre and immediately dismissed Dante's. I simply looked at this game on ...

    Dante's Inferno is a great rental. 0

Dante's Inferno is a game that I have many feelings over. Some of those feelings are good, others are simply just not at all. The story starts and finishes strong, though I am a little confused at exactly where the ending finishes or even leads to. The combat in Dante's Inferno is very reminiscent of a God of War type game, in fact, with the addition of Death's Scythe, it is very similar to that of GoW. That being said, one of the differences between GoW and DI is going to be the addi...

Thing about Dante's inferno, i've never read the divine comedy that this game is suppose to be based on prior to playing the game after playing the game i read the poem, biggest problem for anyone who has read the epic poem is that this does not in fact follow the poem.  Yes dante is there, beatrice is there, but beatrice is helping dante get out of hell in the poem she isn't his lover.   Im gonna try and break down what i think works with this game and what i think doesn't.  Things i loved abou...

Dante's Inferno is a game by the same guys who made dead space. I think they should have really stuck to making survival horror games. The game has a lot of problems. If your going to make a God of War clone you need to have a really good combo system. So here goes my review.  Game play- The combo system isn't very good. You have two skill tree's Holy and Unholy. So in the holy tree you beat the shit outta demon baddies with a cross that throws holy light at them. Most of the Holy tree you have ...

It is their 1st successful entry into the genre, accompanied by full fledged marketing campaigns, Super Bowl ads, pre-order extras, free downloadable content and so forth. The demo of the game is quite gripping, and it captures the actual start of the game as well. A Missed Opportunity 1

I find it very interesting that many reviewers panned Dante’s Inferno for its “gratuitous” nudity and sexuality, while at the same praising the “creative,” extreme, and often misogynistic violence. Apparently, shoving a scythe through the face of a pleading sinner is great entertainment, but the presence of nude men and women crosses some line of good taste. Not that I am advocating Dante’s Inferno’s depictions of nudity any more than I am advocating its use of violence. In my opinion, MOST of th...

(Read the original review on my blog)  Yet another game that I am glad I rented from GameFly, because I ended up not playing it nearly as much as I wanted  to. But it's not that I ran out of time, rather that I just got to a certain point and just stopped because it wasn't fun anymore. I made it about half-way through the game, to the circle of Greed, before I quit due to lack of interest and enthusiasm. That's not good news. The first problem came when they started to reveal Dante's back-story...

    Go to Hell. 0

No really, that’s the driving plot point behind the new EA/Visceral Games title Dante’s Inferno! Based on the original epic poem “The Divine Comedy” by Dante Alighieri, we traverse the nine circles of hell in search of Dante’s wife Beatrice. Apparent by the inclusion of the phrase ‘Dante’s wife Beatrice’, you can tell there have been many creative liberties taken with the original subject material. But it’s okay. If we wanted to stick straight to the classics, this game would be much drier in to...
