It looks like many of the Demon's Souls classes have carried over, some new classes have been added (Bandit, Pyromancer) and some old ones have been removed (Temple Knight, Royalty).

In case you can't read the text:

      • Warrior ( Soldier) : Fearless Warrior, Weapons expert, High strenght, dexterity
      • Knight ( Knight) : Low-ranking knight, High HP, solid armor, Not easily toppled
      • Wanderer ( Wanderer) : Aimless wanderer, Wields scimitar, High dexterity
      • Thief ( Thief) Guilt-ridden thief, High critical hits, Has Master Key (!)
      • Bandit [New] : Savage bandit, High strength, Wields heavy battle axe
      • Hunter ( Hunter) : Bow-wielding hunter, Can handle close-range but vulnerable to magic
      • Sorcerer ( Magician ?) : Sorcerer of Vinheim Dragon School, Casts soul sorceries
      • Pyromancer [New] : Great Swamp pyromancer, Casts fire spells and wields a hand axe
      • Cleric ( Priest ?) : Cleric on Pilgrimage, Wields a mace and casts healing miracles
      • Deprived ( Barbarian) : Unclothed enigma, Only armed with club and old plank shield
It seems likely that all classes now start at level 1, which would explain the absence of the Royalty class. Furthermore, Luck and Magic stats no longer exist, while Attunement, Resistance and Humanity have been added. You'll also apparently be able to choose a starting gift for your character.
The appearance customization looks largely the same, and similarly silly. The change from 'Gender' to 'Hormones' for the Male-Female slider seems sensible, if still somewhat humorous.

Some more new screenshots have been posted in the Gamescom 2011 album.

Edit: the following video has now also officially been posted in the Videos section.

Lastly, in case you missed the new trailer posted yesterday, here it is in unwatermarked HD.

Huh, could of sworn they said they'd be removing the starting class system entirely. I suppose it won't matter in the long run if you'll still be able to customise however you want with zero limitations. Great trailer, btw. I've only just now caught up on how amazing this game looks; the improvements from Demon's Souls are much more apparent.

If there's another Tutorial boss I can spend half an hour beating to death with my fists, I'll be happy.

And I'm always really bad at the make-your-own-face thing. It's always just a little off, every. single. time.

..Now who's rolling Wanderer with me?

It's all about the gender....I mean hormone slider.
Humanity stat though? That mechanic sounds really interesting.
Looks like I'll be rolling Cleric since Temple Knight was my go-to class in DS.

I tried Royalty and Magician in the previous title and I'd say Magician was easier since magic was OP in PvE, but looking at those classes, I guess the Knight class would resemble Royalty the most except without the initial Faith points.

From the videos I've seen so far, it seems that heavy armour, while obviously not allowing you to move as nimbly as light armour, might actually be feasible for movement this time around. The rolls look significantly faster and longer and what's perhaps even more interesting, is that heavy armour seems to occasionally prevent you from flinching when taking damage. This could even the odds in a sword fight.

I'm very curious about this as well. If I had to guess I'd say the Thief has a key on him that allows him to access certain areas which other classes would first have to find specific keys for to unlock. Again though, just guessing.

Playing Bandit, definitely going for the bandit. Going to make myself a Khal Drogo like personality, yeah, you heard me right. Offensive-based melee class with a few tricks up his sleeve, (and doesn't enter battle naked), loving it.

Besides, only type of magic that I respect is, as seen in the Witcher 2, lesbomancy.

I'll agree with you on magic being the way to go in PvE but I dont think that made the magician an easier class to start with.  You can pretty much turn any class into any build (although some are better suited) so by the time you are active in PvE your initial stats don't really matter.  I was referring to the royal starting with a catalyst and knowing soul arrow, with the added MP regenerating ring (which all other classes cannot obtain until midgame-ish).  As a royal in the early game you could pretty much fight everyone with soul arrow and the ring allowed you to not worry as much on MP management.  The only part of the game class really matters is the start, and in DS the royal had several early advantages making it widely regarded as the easiest starting class.

Regardless I think you are probably right :D The knights combo of high HP and solid armor might allow for more mistakes early on in the game.

Oh, No! I played Dark Souls at E3 and it did not register that Royalty was not a selectable class. That being said, they only had a few on display, including the pyromancer. But, a class called "Deprived" !?!? - I may just have to give that shot. Likely on my second play-through, though. I used Royalty in Demons Souls - because they started with that rare MP regenerating ring. It made the first few hours a little easier, assuming you had the patience to let your MP recharge.

Wearin' sweet lookin' armour is always how I want my character to roll so I am probably gonna go Knight.

I still haven't finished the first game but I was never able to play as a Royal well. I always got killed one hit, maybe I didn't level up health enough or something but when I started playing it again I started as a Temple Knight and had way more fun. Gone were the days of making one mistake on a boss and doing the whole level over again.

If you go magic/range based low vitality Royalty build you really need one of the big 100% damage reduction shields.  Purple Flame Shield et al.

You played it wrong then: you're supposed to play it two handed and with the pavise on your back. The Mirdan hammer was one of the favorite weapons in PvP.

That's what I'd wager, too. Or at the very least it's to open up crates and chests littered around the world with supplies, while the other classes need to hunt down minor keys.

And here's how the classes look in-game.

     Warrior

     Knight
     Knight
     Wanderer
     Wanderer
    Thief
    Thief
     Bandit
     Bandit
     Hunter

     Sorcerer
     Sorcerer
     Pyromancer
     Pyromancer
     Cleric
     Cleric
     Deprived
     Deprived
I was thinking of going with Wanderer, but the Bandit's shield looks pretty strong which, combined with the heavy axe, might be a little overpowered. Too early to tell though. Who knows, maybe these weapons will slow him down considerably, plus I don't expect the armour to be very strong either.

    Deprived is silly though.

Was it just me, or did playing as a magic casting class not seem as fun? I played royalty and used a mix of healing magic, projectile magic and rapiers, and the swordfighting seemed really fun and robust. Pyromancer seems like a really fun class, but I'm scared that it won't be as enjoyable as playing something like the knight.

I doubt From Software would be opposed to adding that in. Their games are crazy enough as it is. A telekinetic hacker in a medieval fantasy setting would be fairly normal for them.

Some TGS footage is starting to surface, among it a video revealing the classes' starting statistics:

    Level4535443126
    Vitality111410912118101111

    Endurance12101091411811911

    Intelligence991112891510811
    Faith911811109881411

So apparently the Pyromancer is the only class that actually starts at level 1. I'm still leaning towards Wanderer, though the Thief's relatively high Faith is appealing as well.

Here's the video, which also shows more character customization and starting gifts.

Plenty more 360 (!) footage here, including the entire tutorial, though that's something for another thread.

these classes just boost starting stats don't they?  Or do they actually get special abilities per class.   I tried being a thief in Demon Souls, ending up going sword and board in the end :(

Well they have different starting equipment and weapons, but you're probably right; if it's anything like Demon's Souls your starting class won't mean much as you eventually shape you character to your liking anyway. Though if you already know the direction you're planning to take, it helps to have a class that's properly set up for it early on, like starting with a Cleric if you're planning on investing a lot in Faith.

Interesting video, I wonder if it is only the barbarian .... I mean "deprived" who gets to choose their special item bonus. I love how most of their descriptions basically say 100 different versions of the word "useless". There has to be some sort of trick to them though obviously.
