I can't read Japanese at all, but many people who've read the article seem to be pointing to that fact.

http://www.famitsu.com/news/201204/18013184.html

Specifically these lines:

はい。基本的には忠実な移植になります。解像度に変更はありませんし

and

フレームレートが60になるということもありません。

Hopefully we have some people who can translate it, but man, things are just not looking bright for PC gamers, or even Dark Souls fans in general.

EDIT: this was just found: http://www.destructoid.com/dark-souls-pc-details-specs-control-pvp-and-more-225963.phtml

"Bad news for those hoping to see a high-resolution Dark Souls with this PC port: Miyazaki says that there will be no difference in visual quality between the PC and PS3 version"

UPDATE: Many people have pointed out that the 720p part refers to the TEXTURES and not the pixel resolution.

They're going to release a game on PC that can ONLY be played at 720p? That can't be right.

#3 Posted by Asinies (35 posts) -

Well didn't Transformers: War for Cybertron do something similar?

Also, Namco isn't known for their really good PC ports.

Oop, this article just got released as well: http://www.destructoid.com/dark-souls-pc-details-specs-control-pvp-and-more-225963.phtml

Man, just why?

I bet this game is going to get modded to shit after a week.

Still going to check it out. I'm not going to have time to play on my console until vacation, so a functional PC version would be alright.

I was talking more in line of what people are doing with the Infinity engine games, like Baldur's Gate or Planescape Torment. That engine is not moddable at all, but it didn't stop them from doing total conversions and HDifying them.

I may be wrong and Dark Souls' port can be a piece of shit, though.

Can't read Japanese but where is the confirmation for locked 30 Fps?

Also, I don't care if they're using the same assets as the consoles as long as I get my higher Fps, AA and multiple resolution options.

"Boo, we won't to be able to play this game, experience this man's vision." "Wut, all three versions are the same!? WTF, that's not fair! GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE, DARK SOULS!"

If you're going to port something over to the PC, why not allow it to use all the power a PC can produce? Just such a silly statement to make.

#15 Posted by Ravenlight (8040 posts) -

So they're putting all the work into some extra content and completely skimping on the quality of the port? Baffling. This is why Phil Fish hates you, Japan.

#16 Posted by doobie (605 posts) -

im going to wait and see how it turns out instead of overreacting and getting angry.

im sure it just means there not going to go and re-render all the assets for the PC version which to be honest look great on the PS3 anyway. all i really care about is the frame rate and the game not running at 2FPS in some parts.

#17 Posted by Bocam (3742 posts) -

I translated the two lines for you,

"はい。基本的には忠実な移植になります。解像度に変更はありませんし" = Yes, It's basically a faithful port. There's no change to the resolution

"フレームレートが60になるということも ありません。" = The frame rate won't be 60 FPS

#18 Posted by Buscemi (1106 posts) -

I don't even see the reasoning behind this, are they sabotaging their own game before it comes out?

#19 Posted by Asinies (35 posts) -

@Bocam: Thank you!

#20 Posted by Bocam (3742 posts) -

@doobie: That's specifically what they are saying. You can play it in 1080p but it won't look any different

#21 Posted by TooWalrus (13195 posts) -

Well, this makes sense because-

I'm not sure why, but there's got to be a good reason. Right?

#22 Posted by AlexW00d (6273 posts) -

Could they really be that damn lazy? Only time will tell.

#23 Posted by Giantstalker (1646 posts) -

There are graphic driver workarounds for this for older games which do not support high resolutions.

There are even ways to edit registry/game files to unlock higher framerates.

In the end, you can never beat PC gamers, they will find a way to get what they want.

#24 Posted by TobbRobb (4639 posts) -

For fuuuuuucks sake. I don't care about the resolution thing, but LET ME PLAY IN 60fps. WHY WOULD YOU NOT LET ME!? I don't fucking care if it's hard to do, it's the one thing I demand.

#25 Posted by Akrid (1356 posts) -

You fools! They're saying that the textures and such are unchanged and non-HD, not that the game can't change resolutions...

#26 Posted by Brodehouse (9949 posts) -

In related news, Dark Souls achieves 30 FPS.

If I can get 30 FPS in Blighttown I will consider this a successful port.
#28 Edited by Sinkjaer (31 posts) -

Even if its using the same assets it will still look alot better in a higher resolution.

I have no problem with simple textures and models from the console version.

But an artificial 30 fps frame limit is just idiotic. I don't get the logic behind such a thing, why sabotage your own product? The next thing will be a lower limit on load times. God forbid it should be to fast.

It will be interesting to see if the pirate version gets fixed like they did with LA Noir.

Pirates got 60fps, 16:10 ar and larger FOV after the developers had failed in doing so.

why

Mass Effect 2 PC. Plays a video, and the loads last as long as the videos. Fine for consoles, but on PC when you replace the BIK files it loads super fast and doesnt have to play the video.

Sucks for the people who were dying to max out Dark Souls and have a hell of a fucking mind-tripping japanese masochist time gathering souls. Hell I don't even like the game from what I've seen yet the idea of maxing out that niche gem made me contemplate buying it.

Just sucks for the pc community. I pretty much expected that as soon as I heard From are handling the port. Japanese developers ar not very good at making games for that platform.

#33 Posted by Brendan (7804 posts) -

Is there any logical reason for doing this? I'm not looking for justified sarcastic or negative responses, but something from the devs perspective. Does anyone know why it would be in their interest, in any way, to do this?

#34 Posted by Asinies (35 posts) -

I mean, I have a theory that Namco thinks having everyone locked at 30fps would make the game more fair during PVP matches or something silly like that.

#35 Posted by WMWA (1162 posts) -

So you guys bitch about not getting a PORT (keyword there) of this game. Then bitch about it being a PORT. (there's that damn word again)

No, we're bitching about it not being a good port. It's really not that hard of a concept to understand.

I had completely forgotten about that, even though I used a custom moviepak myself.

Guess I'm not able to make up something that is dumber than whats already reality.

It would be interesting to hear how these decisions get made. What argument was behind having people looking at loading screens for 20 seconds. They did not contain any info regarding to the story.

I don't wanna play one of this generations defining masterpiece because it runs in 720p and 30 fps! I'll just bitch and complain and talk about how awesome my PC is and how awesome Dark Souls could have been running in 1080p at 60fps on my amazing 24 horse power processor that didn't cost much and outdates the PS3 by 35 years.

Give me a fucking break.

What you're saying is insane. "I don't like the game but If I can make it look a bit prettier then I'm in." "Hell I don't like the game but I can get a few more frames than on the ps3 (which you own amhadmetallic) so take my money"

I really love how you give the implication that we're all PC gamers. I played the game on the PS3 and loved it. I see Namco is botching the PC port, and you're telling me I have no right to complain about it JUST because I'm also a PC gamer? Get off your high-horse kid.

I'll say this once again. If you're going to port it over to the PC, why not do it right?

#41 Posted by Twinsun (476 posts) -

It is what it is, but it's too bad if the game won't live up to it's true potential on PC.

#42 Posted by Iron_Tool (221 posts) -

Why Namco why!?!?

I said it made me contemplate buying it. Sometimes when a game looks and feels so exotic and strange, with mad level design and art such as Dark Souls', the graphical capabilities of a PC can turn it into a film-like experience from the future. Graphics are NOT the reason one should buy a game, but they sure as hell play a huge aesthetic role with unique games such as this one.
I wouldn't be surprised if the immersion and eye-gasm of maxing out Dark Souls on my 570 would make me more willing to progress in it and keep playing it.

Have you seen the Silent Hill HD collection. 30fps would be a major step up. I read the 720p thing as that they would be doing a quick and dirty port rather than re-doing all the textures etc.

#47 Posted by Azteck (7449 posts) -

That is absolutely retarded. Guess I'll wait for the community to find a work-around. At least for the FPS-lock because I cannot play a game at 30fps anymore.

#48 Posted by thornie (169 posts) -

Fuck that. Seriously, FUCK THAT. What's the point? I'm just going to pick this up for PS3 sometime this summer.

#49 Posted by MikkaQ (10288 posts) -

So what's the point the port if I could just play it on Xbox or PS3 and have the same experience?

Probably because...The thing with those games...I'm sure FROM has...Dude I got nothing. Who the fuck knows man. I am gonna say it's because they want all three version to be exactly the same. Also, it's FROM. Who the hell knows the real reason. It does seem odd to have platform with more power and not use it. Maybe it's just lack of experience with PC gaming. Japan is not very well knows for it's PC community.
