I'm feeling rather generous and have decided to take a break from my game to maybe offer some insight towards the Giantbomb community, being as how most of you are among the awesomest.

Anywhoser, I have multiple saves, one surpassing 60 hours, the Demon's Souls plat, and have been everywhere in the game. If you are in need of knowledge I will do my best to assist.

    Alright shoot!

I'm about to fire up my first game today (just got the game), and I never played Demon's Souls. What class do you recommend as a good newbie class? I've heard Pyromancer is a good choice, but I almost always go melee in my RPGs.

Why did From decide to fuck up weapon scaling and ruin late game character building?

Pyromancer is good call because you'll start with high damaging ax as well as the pyromancer flame ability, which is easy to increase in strength. What you should know however is that most axe's cannot combo, and are good for one shot kills or gaurd breaking. Getting used to when to two hand, and when to not will take a bit self learning.

Another good starting class is the Warrior or Knight. However with these classes you'll have to play a tank for the first couple hours (or remove armor/replace with lighter shit) which will limit your rolling and your stamina recovery. You'll have to keep a close eye on your stamina to make sure you don't leave yourself defenceless.

Wanderer and Thief are similar and good too, (Wanderer being my go to guy like Demon's) however they get hit hard and are more of an advanced class I suppose. You need to be good at backstabs, evading and parrys to get the most out of them.

Socerer and Cleric I don't reccommend for a couple reasons, the main being is their weakness with melee at the start (especially Socerer) and their limited spells available. Also the pyromancer is capable of picking up their abilities quickly and is a better melee fighter overall.

The Deprived is a great class in the right hands, offers the easiest costumization. However lacking armor will destroy you quickly, and this class is far suited for ballsy or more advanced play.

In the end it matters little what you choose, you can do anything with anyone. Only the first couple hours will matter. Good Luck and Happy Souling!

I believe what you're seeing is the game comparing what you have equiped and what you're looking at.

It could also be showing you what you're character stats will do to effect the weapon, increasing it's damage output, or if you don't have the required stats, decreasing it.

For the first part of your question this is something I've never known entirely. What I can tell you is A is very good. I believe S is the best, while E is the worst. So it goes like this - S, A, B, C, D, E.

The reasoning behind this I'm not sure, but you see it in a lot of japanese games. Devil May Cry mission bonus works like this for example. I'm sure someone knows, if I had to guess it could possibly have something to do with their educational system? Pardon my ignorance but that's the best I got.

What you're saying is an opinion, the weapon scaling does nothing but effect overpowered characters. If anything this game is far more balanced than demon's. FUCK YOU SCRAPING SPEAR.

You will find better bows as you progress, their exact locations I can't recall. I know you'll find a dragonslayer bow in Anor Londo that is capable of massiv damage. My advice for now is to use the bow to pull enemies (get ones attention out of a group) and draw him back for an easier 1v1 fight. Don't rely on the bows for killshots, just to make you time easier.

As for the Butterfly soul, yes it can be used to create a Demon's Soul Weapon (not the game, a weapon created with a demon's soul). This isn't available until around halfway through the game in Anor Londo. You will find a blacksmith there capable of infusing a weapon with a demon's soul. The weapon must be at level +10  to acomplish is. As for the exact weapon you need, and what it will make, this information I do have but i feel you'll have much more fun finding that out for yourself.

How is it more balanced? Because of lightning weapons and the total nerf in scaling, strength and dex builds are rendered completely useless. In fact, everything is complete dog shit compared to a vit/end build with an electric Uchi =/

Demon's Souls wasn't balanced very well either, but at least it wasn't completely busted. Between lightning weapons and the fog ring, pvp and invading is gonna be all kinds of awful in Dark Souls.

@xaLieNxGrEyx: I got a fiery soul thing from a dead body on the altar of the Chapel/Church just before you face the two gargoyles.

I hear that's used to increase the Estus flask potency. Any idea how I go about doing that? Also, I'm three hours in and rocking a Knight with a shield/spear combo. Enjoying it but wondering what stats I should focus on. Have been dropping all my points into Endurance and Strength and nothing else (found the dragon's tail sword but don't have a high enough str stat to wield it yet).

I see your concerns however I feel it is too early to make such assumptions. I had a player using an electric Uchi in my game and I believe he was doing around 300 damage a swing, something I had surpassed a while ago. I know this means little, but i don't feel we have an end all be all class this early in the games life.

Also I know of the perfect weapon for a Dex/Strength/Vitality build, and if used correctly as in only leveling those stats up besides the weapons requiements, it is capable of dealing massive damage (600+ per swing)

Using this weapon with the wolf ring and heavy armor,  (especially heavy armor resistant to lightening) would destroy a Uchi lightning build iimo

True, and I'm excited to try and build some combinations to attempt to dominate that build. However, I really do think that the fog ring needs to go to hell and stay there forever. I have no idea what they were thinking when they put it in the game. Completely cripples spell casters and just makes me want to not bother with the game.

What you're asking is a very very complicated question, one that I would need to write an essay on, as well as you having more personal wisdom about the game to fully appreaciate. However, I can offer you a more open answer, to help you down the correct path.

For starters, go to firelink, head down there's a mute girl locked behind bars, she will allow you to use the firekeeper soul, because she's well, the firekeeper.

Now for the second part - It sounds like you want to go with a tank build, which is completly accaptable. You'll obviously want to drop points into vitality, endurance, and strength. You'll also want to rock some heavier armor to just absorb damage like you're play fighting a 6 year old.

You will need strenght and dex to wield most better weapons in the game, my advice would be to continue doing what you're doing, and if you happen to locate a weapon that catches your eye, check its stat requirement and then meet it when you have it. You'll find a lightning spear later which is very effective, and you'll come across some larger swords.

Also remember, that many players including very good ones (as well as myself) start the game over after locating their weapon of choice. You're in the learning process right now just keep pushing forward.

My last bit of advice would to be not to increase any stat over 25 before knowing what you want. Just keep going with what you're doing and try not to kill one stat. Having 35 vitality wont help you much if you can't wear armor or swing a sword.

    Thanks! Greatly appreciated.

I was increasing my endurance as I really didn't want to ever be more than 50% encumbered. Then again, with how little I use roll except when in boss fights, I guess that doesn't matter and I should focus on the armour. Plus, I always have a hard time working out when to roll and when to block in games. Had the same issues in Demon's Souls and every boss fight ever in God of War. Would rather have a high enough endurance stat to be able to block all but the toughest attacks without getting staggered than try to dodge in case I misjudge the distance.

Can't wait to grab the lightning spear. I cast some Gold Resin/Lightning powder thing on my spear and just tore through some armoured foes earlier and really felt good about it. I specialised using swords and arrows in Demon's Souls but, having tried out the spear here, the safety of the added reach is really sitting well with me.

Thing is though, endurance is actually only half the contributer to blocking. Remember a good shield can protect your indurance without having to pour all you stats into endurance. try leveling up a shield if you're having trouble and not pouring those important souls into endurance when it's not needed.

So does the damage stat on shields still represent the amount of damage a shield will soak before it reflects on your endurance like in Demons Souls?

@xaLieNxGrEyx: Wanderer. tips please? I put points into str to get it to 16 for some weapon stuff, the rest is going into dex , end and vit but the question is. How much should i put into it? :o

Should i focus on just DEX for now up until a certain number or alternate between the three? I think my dex is 22 while vit and end is 15.

Edit: I'm a spear/shield, sword/shield or sword / spear with some cheap bow-tactics mixed in kinda guy :)

    Ah, didn't know that, thanks!

Still a bit too early on to be able to upgrade equipment (at least, I don't think I can do so yet - all the options were greyed out when I visited the blacksmith near the Chapel. Then again, I also had no souls with me at the time so that could have been a factor.

As soon as you meet the Blacksmith you can upgrade, you just need souls and Titanite Shards, which he sells you.

On another note: Does the first Blacksmith only upgrade weapons to +5?

Yo duder, can you help me with the upgrade system? I don't really know anything about it, and I want to start doing some of it, since I've learned the Drake Sword isn't going to help me forever. The things I know are, that some weapons scale with stats, I have a Claymore, a Zweihander and a Winged Spear, and I'm pretty sure I've read those weapons could become pretty good once upgraded, but I'm playing a bandit, so are they ideal for a strength, vitality, resistance/endurance build, or are there any other weapons that are better suited for that, other than the crazy axe I have that requires 50 strength? I know that some enemies can only be killed if the weapon you are wielding is devine, how the hell does it become that.

Hope this isn't too much, and too stupid a question, the game has not explained any of this yet, but it might in the future (I'm just now entering Blight Town).

You can tell what stats scale which items by where it says "Param Bonus" or something to that effect. It grades how well your stat affects the weapon's damage with an E-A (or not at all) scale. For example, if a weapon says Param Bonus: *strength symbol* C *dexterity symbol* C, then that weapon will benefit from your dexterity and strength moderately strongly. Both the claymore and Zweihander will be better than the Drake Sword damage wise at +5 (meaning upgraded 5 times) with a strength of around 30, and they both scale with strength and dexterity (I think more towards strength though), and I think the Zweihander scales better with strength than the Claymore does. (I know that because I have both to 5 and 31 strength and both do more damage than my Drake Sword now, with the Zweihander doing significantly more.) The winged spear scales better with dexterity than it does strength, but it scales with both. So, they are all three fine for your build, but the Zweihander or Claymore would be better suited towards the stats you mentioned. Divine weapons are made when you have a +5 weapon and you need certain materials to then upgrade it to a divine version (I believe you do this at the first blacksmith you meet). darksouls.wikidot.com will be a great resource to learn all of this once the game is out for a while longer and the wiki is filled in.

First off, I want to simply say thanks for all your insight and knowledge of the game :D.

But my question is (and it may be spoilery, it may not, since I haven't beaten the segment):

I got sucked into the huge painting in the Ador Londo Cathedral.

    1. Is this a bonus area?
    2. Can I get out once I'm in, or do I need to just finish it (It doesn't seem to demanding for my build)

Just minor things, but questions regardless. Again, thank you.

I now have another question: Where should I go to get large titanite shards? Maybe PM me in case others want to find out where themselves.

@xaLieNxGrEyx:  So I just read about how if you drop items it can turn into a phantom and wander into other peoples games leaving you with some pretty good items. My question is how do you know when they are phantoms and how to you get the items from them? Thanks for the help man

What is better? Killing the wolf and getting the souls/ring, or letting him live and getting the sword. I have been putting most of my points into strength + endurance, fyi. Haven't upgraded faith/int/attune but I use pyromancy on occasion

I can imagine that being really helpful, really tempted to use a guide for a little while just to get me on the right path, but most of the game is about figuring shit out on your own, I just wish they introduced you a little to the mechanics, I can't imagine trying to get into this game as a someone who picked it up randomly, and just play video games "casually",

I don't know the exact question to this, as I've only gotten to the wolf once, however if you'll need to join the forest covenant and get to rank 5 by invading and killing players you venture into the woods to get the giant cat to ask you to kill the wolf.

This is where you can decide to let him  live and recieve the rewards, however you will be betraying the forest covenant and they wont be too happy. It's your choice and you're gonna have to live with it lol

Sackmanjones - That's the gravelord covenant you can join in the cave of the giants by talk to nito

Toolus - More humanity increases your damage output as well, however small
