I'm not going to play online: It's still worth it?

#1 Posted by MikeGosot (3227 posts) -

After reading IGN's review, the reviewer said that "online play is crucial", but i want to play this game alone...

I know the game isn't out yet, but, at least in Demon's Souls, could you play offline with no problems?

#2 Edited by Vorbis (2749 posts) -

Is this a choice or a restriction on your connection?

Basically online play lets you see where other people went wrong, it also lets people leave useful hints for you, stuff like hidden items and ways to avoid dying. In the QL for example if they had been online Rorie would of seen a warning telling him not to step out onto the bridge.

So no it's not crucial but it will make things harder for you.

If you're actively avoiding it because of Black Phantoms, don't. Being invaded is very rare. And playing with other people in "co-op" is optional and isn't needed, online or off.

#3 Posted by TheHT (10810 posts) -

Absolutely. There was only one part IIRC where online was needed (a boss that would be controlled by a player) but the rest I played while completely ignoring any multiplayer.

Online

I've heard that Dark Souls has online play that is much more integral to the experience. You aren't required to summon people if you don't want to and apparently black phantoms are a lot rarer, so it's more "enhanced single player" than it is multiplayer. If you can play while connected, I highly suggest that you do.

Both. I have an XBOX, and i never saw a reason to play on XBOX Live, since i don't like multiplayer experiences... And my connection is shitty. Like, really shitty.

Ah, then no, you should not purchase XBLGold just for this game. It will still be enjoyable enough without online.

Marriage between Single Player and Multiplayer is unholy. UNHOLY I SAY!

On a more serious note, i will play this ignoring the "enhanced single player" aspect, but, thanks.

Dark souls without online is like a metal gear game without a soundtrack

#10 Posted by imsh_pl (3295 posts) -

Absolutely. Online play did change Demon's Souls quite a bit for me, but it still is a perfectly enjoyable experience when playing on your own.

#11 Posted by FengShuiGod (1478 posts) -

Online play can be useful if you ever actually get stuck somewhere because you can read people's hints. But, you can always look up stuff online if you ever get really stuck.

I was thinking more of the word epic.

#14 Edited by onarum (1999 posts) -

Yeah they design it in a way that it's not at all necessary (I beat demons souls without calling for blue phantom help not even once) so you should be fine, but at the same time it's a nice feature to have, if only for seeing blood pools from the ones that died (and their last seconds of life) or reading stupid messages, well at least for Demons Souls it was.

BTW does dark souls have the blood pool thing? what about all the ghostly figures running around? those were pretty neat in Demons souls.

I had a great time playing Demon's Souls offline. I don't think it will be any different with Dark Souls.

I don't think the Metal Gear series is epic, so that's why i didn't thought that, but what exactly the online features have that make it so epic? .__.

#17 Posted by Nate (702 posts) -

I don't think it's that big a deal. I sometimes would play Demon's Souls offline, and it's totally fine. Vinny, Rorie, and Kevin VanOrd (I believe) were all playing it offline in the past week, and loving it. So, totally great game even without the multiplayer.

To struggle through a dark dungeon and and seeing the phantoms of other players sharing the same plight adds something no other game has.

Beating off player invasions and assisting other warriors in tackling bosses while teaching eachother new strategies.

Take it as you want but Dark souls offline is just not the same game.

#19 Edited by Marz (5642 posts) -

I played half of Demon's Souls offline ( PSN was down due to the hacking fiasco earlier this year)  and the game was very enjoyable.  I don't find the online all that crucial, i beat flamelurker by myself (most people tend to get a buddy to help out).  Bloodstain hints do help alot once I was able to play Demon's Souls online, I avoided black phantoms like the plague as well and just stayed in spirit form.  Dark Souls seems to have more of the same features.  So yeah totally playable offline.

#20 Posted by huntad (1930 posts) -

You will still enjoy it. It will just be a bit harder/trial and error-esque.

#21 Posted by Aetheldod (3495 posts) -

I´ve played Demon Souls both ways and offline mode is as enjoyable as online mode , so I see no beef in it

#22 Posted by MikeGosot (3227 posts) -

@Questionable: I see... I will try to play online when i can. If i can;

#23 Posted by Floppypants (798 posts) -

Co-op is encouraged, people want to help you. They get a large amount of souls and humanity as a reward. In Demon's Souls, I enjoyed grinding souls by simply helping people kill difficult bosses like Flamelurker. You can trivialize hard encounters when it's four players versus one boss. By not playing online you're just making the game harder than it was designed to be.

I *hated* black phantoms in Demon's Souls, I could never kill them, but I learned how to deal with them. When they invade, just quit the game. The game saves all your progress but the player is gone when you come back.

#24 Posted by Aetheldod (3495 posts) -

@Floppypants: What a cheater :( killing a black phantom is the greatest feeling ... specially when you use a big dragon as your help :P also invading someone and using the stage as your advantage etc.

Another player who invades your session in order to seek you out and kill you.

I loved frustrating other DS players, so causing someone to disconnect instead of killing them would feel just as good for me. I think the easiest way to deal with them would be to just stay in Soul Form, though.

Exactly .... altho there are also some enemies that are black phantoms which are a harder type of enemies , usually they never respawn after you defeat them.

It'll still be worth it, but you should still give the online gameplay a chance if you can.

#29 Posted by Floppypants (798 posts) -

@Aetheldod: I imagine that killing a black phantom would feel amazing. It would be extra amazing for me considering how much I HATE THEM. But they beat me. They broke me. They've even broken my gear with scraping spears. I hate them.

Actually, this is the most interesting thing i've ever heard about the multiplayer.

You should probably do more research into Demon's Souls and Dark Souls multiplayer components before writing it off. Off the top of my head, these are what online brings:

  1. Being able to summon up to 3(?) Blue Phantoms, which are other players, so that they may help you in battle.
  2. Being able to view messages left by other players that are oftentimes very helpful when searching for hidden items/equipment or avoiding an otherwise unforeseen death.
  3. Being able to view bloodstains left by other players so that you may view their last moments before they died and in turn learning from their mistakes so that you may avoid the same end.
  4. Having your world tendency influenced by events and other players.
  5. Being able to be invaded by Gravelords or sending out Gravelords, as a Pyromancer, into other players' sessions. Gravelords are monsters, basically.
  6. Being able to invade other players' sessions or be invaded as/by a Black Phantom. The creatures in the invaded player's session will not attack you

Oh, sorry if i sounded like a jerk! D:

What i meant was: "The aspect of the game getting harder with multiplayer is more appealing to me than the cooperative aspect."

#33 Posted by FluxWaveZ (19305 posts) -
@MikeGosot: Huh? Did I sound like a jerk? I just meant that the multiplayer is a pretty big part of the game and that it'd be preferable to know more about it before not wanting to partake in it.

When you're in human form, you're in constant danger of being invaded by a Black Phantom. Black Phantoms will usually do this because these are players who are in Soul Form and, if they manage to kill you, they'll regain their body. If you kill them, however, you'll be awarded with all of their souls.

I was mostly talking about Demon's Souls as that's the game I know about (I've been avoiding/ignoring a whole lot about Dark Souls), but I had no idea they removed the Soul Form. Interesting.

Actually I have heard from some guys the game freezes up if you play it online for like 1-2 hours without a break. So I would advise avoiding online anyway until they get the little kinks fixed. Fair warning/tip too, the invading summoning aspect is not lost single player. Apparently there are factions in the game and you can earn the ability to summon buddy npcs and npcs that hate you can invade your game even offline. No I don't know the details of it only that it can be done and will happen.

#38 Posted by Nitrocore (369 posts) -

In Demon's Soul the online part of the game wasn't crucial, but it did add more depth and tension to the gameplay, especially when players could enter your game willie nilly, I'm hoping it's the same in the new one.

I reckon it would be worth it to try and get online with it, but at the end of the day I don't think it's make or break if you don't have access to the online play, interactions with other players was quite limited in Demon's Souls, and it could well be the same in Dark Souls.

They showed it on the IGN 24 hour stream and there are NPCs/factions that when you talk to them, they will give you an item and before fighting a boss, you have to be human and find their summon mark to summon them and they will give you aid against the boss. Note though that they won't be as good as a living player (in most cases) but hey, how smart does a meat shield need to be?

#41 Posted by Karkarov (2942 posts) -

@Vashyron: Fair enough. I haven't watched any of the streams though for various reasons, want to go in with as little knowledge of anything save game mechanics as possible.

Of course it is.
