So me and a friend are playing Dark souls together, and at the end of the undead parish he hit the fat gold guy( says still closed Mmmmm) in front of the blacksmith then had to kill him. now i wanted to know was this guy important or is my friend ok.

he was a quest npc that would give you items for furthering your journey And talking to him, As they said above

You can still finish the game but without one of the only npc's who truly likes you and your awesomeness in all your killing and dieing.

He pops up pretty often throughout the game, and gives you some items. I can't remember what exactly, and I'm not sure if he has any more significance than that.

I remember he gives you the pointed shield that goes with the Catarina set. It has a spike on it and can do damage. Not really great.
