Should I play Demon's Souls before I play this?

#1 Posted by JokerSmilez (1293 posts) -

I recently got a PS3 and while Demon's Souls sounded really interesting to me I was worried about the online integration and the leaving of messages, etc. being important enough to the game that I wouldn't be able to play it at this point.

Should I just skip it and jump right to Dark Souls? Or is Demon's Souls worth playing first?

You might get burnt out going from Demons Souls to Dark Souls so quickly.

I would say you can just jump right in, there is no continuity in the game story wise, just gameplay stuff. If you don't want to play through all of Demon's Souls and delay playing this game I would suggest checking out the Let's Play by Squint http://lparchive.org/Demons-Souls/ It is a really well done LP and he covers a lot of the game and details several play styles so you can get a feel for the experience and have an idea of what to expect in this type of game. In fact, I don't have enough time to playthrough Demon's Souls again myself so I am just watching the LP as a quick fix to tide me over until Dark Souls releases.

That's my opinion, as well. Just go for Dark Souls.

They are so similar that it really doesn't matter. Dark Souls is like Demon's Souls+.

Yes, and read all the novels too…

All I could find were copies in Italian and Polish, going to have to get them translated.

If you jump straight in, you probably won't understand all of the subtle nuances in the rich fiction of the Souls's universe. I'd suggest you at least consume some audio books before you play.

Demon's souls is very much worth playing, id say just play dark souls and if you really like it and manage to finish it and are craving for more you will be one of the lucky few who can get more in DS

It's the same game for a quarter of the price, so sure, go for it. The bloodstains and messages are pretty pointless if you ask me and I personally played through the entire thing in Offline Mode. They should still be there though as they only disappear to make room for new ones. What you should be worried about is the lack of co-op/PvP opportunities. Not sure which version you're planning on getting, but the European servers have always been extremely barren because everybody already bought the Asian or US version.

Also, keep in mind that these servers won't stay up forever, so if you have any intention of playing Demon's Souls online, better get the game ASAP.

You shouldn't play any game before this. It should be the first game you ever play. It's your PS3 saying YO VIDEOGAMES SON.

Enjoy!

Exactly. Demon's Souls is cheap as hell, and it's no less brilliant today.

And if you want to go further, play the Kings Field games as the Souls games are spiritual successors to those.

Something that I heard which makes me wonder is that in Demon's Souls, one of the easiest ways to play was as a Spellcaster and spam magic on everything and only using melee when they were resistant to magic. It sounds like Dark Souls has balanced out the relative ease of that playstyle by straight up limiting the number of spells you can cast by charges instead of MP. Interesting choice.

Anyway the point is that playing as a spellcaster can make the first run through a new game of Demon's Souls relatively easy (compared to melee anyhow). So give that a try if yo ugo back to it. I recommend starting as a Royal because Soul Arrow is the hotness.

Dude are you kidding? You have no chance of appreciating the lore and the environment unless you play Demon's Souls first. Of course any real connoisseur will tell you that you have no hope of grasping any of the true meaning of this games many layers unless you also play King's Field 1-4 first as well.... and both Shadow Tower games.... and Eternal Ring while you are at it!

I'm so tempted to jump into Dark Souls (or Demon Souls) for that matter after watching the recent quick look. Although, I just can't shake the fact that I'll get very frustrated with the difficulty.

I tried to do this last year! Even as primitive as they look, the Playstation games have a rich atmosphere to them as well as fully realized worlds to explore. But, oh god, they control so poorly. And they continued to use that control scheme in the beautiful PS2 game! It's an unfortunate mixed bag, having these amazing worlds to traverse while moving like an obese 3-toed sloth with leg irons and a fused spinal column. I'd still recommend them, but with a huge caveat that you need the patience of a goddamned saint to fully enjoy them.

I am currently replaying demon's souls while i wait for dark souls to be delivered and its more or less just to get me back into the style of the game :D I have put easily 200+ hours into this game and the messages have only helped me, twice maybe. Even then, it was more for me trying to summons someone with the "I am in trouble, please recommend this" Which usually would get me a blue phantom. Get demon souls if you want to play the oiginal or just get dark. Either way, you will love the game or hate the game. Demon's souls is like 20$ new anyways so why not?

Wouldn't it be crappy if you played this, get burned out on Demon Souls and when you go to play Dark Souls no one is playing it anymore?

That is what I'm worried about, what do you guys think? How long does DS go for anyway?

Pros for playing Dark Souls first:

You wont be disappointed with some of the changes that were made that aren't that bad but can seem a little annoying. It's bigger. It's new. You won't be distracted constantly thinking about the new thing while playing the old thing. If you play Demon's first and aren't too burned out for Dark, you'll end up not getting as much out of Demon's Souls because there is something equally awesome to move on to (if Demon's Souls was it, you would grind that mofo like a madman and milk every loving thing out of it).

Pros for playing Demon's Souls first:

Cheaper. Get it while you can, the servers will go down eventually. It's every bit the super awesome must have game and even has some very distinct advantages over Dark Souls. If you don't play Demon's first, you probably never will.

If you can play Demon's Souls like it was just released and you are capable of forgetting Dark Souls exists until you've burned a billion hours on Demon's Souls and really milked it for all it's worth, play Demon's Souls first. If you are just going to burn through Demon's Souls and move on, play Dark Souls first.

For what it's worth, I think Dark is more frustrating than Demon's so far.

I just got a PS3 and the very first game I grabbed was Demon's Souls, for $20. It's amazing so far; I've beaten 3 bosses and I'm level ~30 started as a Knight, heavily focused on melee with a little magic for kicks. Definitely grab it, I have been playing online but haven't had any interactions with any other players yet. The game can be extremely frustrating (see world 1-2) but in all cases you can either level up a little and you'll be fine or simply come back to it later once you've beaten other bosses because you have that choice. I can't really speak to the late game, but I'm having a great time.

Still haven't beaten the fucking Tower Knight though. What an asshole.

Just dive in. Demon's Souls is old hat now. :D

I was wondering the same thing really, but since I only have an Xbox 360 I'm stuck with just playing Dark Souls. But from what I heard you would be fine to just playing Dark Souls. No story related and Dark Souls is just a better version of Demon Souls

People are still playing Demon's Souls so unless you don't play Dark Souls until 2015 I think you'll be OK.

I'm seeing plenty of bloodstains and ghosts around on Demon's Souls as of yesterday. In fact, now is probably a good time to be playing it as people may be trying to get through the first before moving onto the second.
