Quick Look: Dark Void Demo

#1 Edited by Venatio (4491 posts) -

I thought the graphics were pretty bad but the gameplay was fine

Also, I like the music and the visual style even though the graphics aren't great

#2 Posted by Blair (2507 posts) -

I'm excited for this.

#3 Edited by CptChiken (1987 posts) -

The site is getting very slow, and I can't delete double posts because Luchadeer wont let me.

Instead I will replace the duplicate with this.

Looking forward for this.

This should be good.

#7 Posted by NTM (7409 posts) -

Nolan North's in too many games now.
#8 Posted by Griddler (3344 posts) -

Hell yes. Is this on PSN aswell?

#9 Posted by Dany (7887 posts) -

The visuals remind me of Crackdown and borderlands....what is that called again>

Yeah, playing it, it felt uneasy....transitioning from one to another was great but yeah, not that great.

#10 Posted by ez123 (1965 posts) -

He got out of that UFO quickly.

#11 Posted by dhuff (120 posts) -

It's so crappy... now I'm glad they didn't get David Bowie to reprise his role as Tesla

#12 Posted by Zicdab (388 posts) -

That didn't sell me on the game.

#13 Posted by GeekDown (1170 posts) -

The graphics look a bit rough at spots but I liked it and the flying was fun. Definite buy for me...

#14 Posted by Hilfemaster (102 posts) -

great now i don't need to download the demo

Hah, I thought this sounded a lot like Battlestar Galactica. And sure enough, it turns out that BSG composer Bear McCreary is behind Dark Void's score as well.

#16 Posted by Rhaknar (5939 posts) -

i tried the demo, was very underwhelmed. and I usually like less than stellar games (i liked and finished bionic commando, and im loving the saboteur)

#17 Posted by ZmillA (2272 posts) -

the shooting and flying feel "good"? I thought it felt like crap. Don't really know why jeff is so fond of this game...

I remember a time when I used to buy a magazine more or less just to try the demos on the disc, yet now I totally agree with what this guy is saying.
#19 Posted by stinky (1549 posts) -

if i never hear of darkvoid again i'll be ok.

#20 Posted by FunExplosions (5407 posts) -

Looks waay better than I thought. Looks real fun to play too. I really hope Nolan will start to deny some contracts pretty soon, I'd hate to get sick of his voice.

#21 Posted by Shrimp (11 posts) -

Looks like the scale is a bit off. That ship and the boss at the end almost looked like toys.

#22 Posted by EpicSteve (6487 posts) -

That game looks hella generic from the demo. I though Dark Void would end up being like Bionic Commando in terms of a lot of people having issues with it and others loving it.

#23 Posted by dEFaNkT (62 posts) -

no

#24 Posted by wrecks (2266 posts) -

Seems like a very basic game with a cool jetpack mechanic.

The GB staff seems to be hyped for Dark Void, judging by various comments from them on the Bombcast, and I actuallyI had a "Hey, Dark Void could really be something" moment a while ago after a trailer.

Now that I've seen actual, real gameplay, I have concluded that they're insane. This looks bad.

I played this demo last night and it just... didn't feel good to me. It definitely gave me a Crimson Skies vibe, but the flying's too loose and when you're on foot the enemies are bullet-sponges.

#27 Posted by Kung_Fu_Viking (710 posts) -

Is it meant to cut out like that just as Jeff's talking about the boss looking thing?

#28 Posted by Xshinobi (387 posts) -

Can't wait for the full release.

#29 Posted by Mgsfreak (133 posts) -

Never looked into the game but for some reason I expected more, Must of got it confused with something else.....

#30 Posted by nanikore (2740 posts) -
@Kung_Fu_Viking: No. The Duder of Death has struck again.
#31 Posted by Agent47CSim2 (1085 posts) -

I thought it looked alright... before the demo was out. It didn't really get excited by this and some texture popping was awfull on the giant robot and yes the enemies are bullet sponges on foot.

#32 Posted by HateCage (22 posts) -

Gave this a go last night.  The flying was better than I thought it would be.  Gunplay seems fine.  However, the graphic quality was quite a let down and the music sounded tinny.  Guess they can't all be winners but I will rent this and give it a full look.

Animations look a little too stilted and unpolished for a game that has been in development as long as Dark Void. The laser animations on the UFOs, in particular, look like they fell out of the first Half-Life. I'm beginning to wonder if Tsujimoto meant to umbrella this game with Bionic Commando as one of the tribulations of outsourcing to the West.

#34 Posted by Nasos100 (727 posts) -

it ends abruptly at 10.17. what this intended?

#35 Posted by Soap (3594 posts) -

I've only just realised they have maneged to hide a fucking flight game under the pretense of something good.

Shameful.

Weird... I had been reading and seeing stuff about Dark Void for so long. After playing the demo, it feels like I've read about a completely differente game. Sure, it was just a demo and I could be impressed with the final product. But I'm not buying it at release anymore.

I guess you're wondering along with every single person who read the article.

crap!

#39 Edited by handlas (2684 posts) -

Nice quicklook.  Jeff seemed to think it was alright at least.  Glad they did this since I think the demo is getting WAY too much hate from everyone.  Seems like the first person that put up his "demo impressions" bashed the game and everyone fell in like sheep to agree with him (many of which admit to not even playing the demo).  Lot of whining about the controls as well.  They are fine.

Not that the demo was outstanding.  But it has it's moments...particularly the air combat and even transitioning to the ground combat was fun.  I think there is a good game buried in there that I hope someone makes later on if this game does indeed end up being crap.

#40 Posted by Scarabus (481 posts) -

This looks a lot jankier than I expected.

#41 Posted by Nasar7 (2703 posts) -

Love Nolan North's voice acting but it'd be nice if he didn't use the same exact voice in every role. Also, the game doesn't look as terrible as I imagined, but not that great either.

#42 Posted by pawsoffury (122 posts) -

Best thing about that demo was that sick bass line.

#43 Posted by TerraDelu (501 posts) -

Ive been doubtful until now... that shit looks awesome. Plus, Nolan cocksucking North!

Nolan cocksucking North huh?  What a compliment!

The 3 videos I've watched today, I've had to hit replay and then clicked somewhere near the end if I want to see the end of the videos, as it cuts out just before. Kind of sucks.

#46 Posted by zombie2011 (4973 posts) -

oh only 10 mins.

#47 Posted by HatKing (5973 posts) -

There are some things about this game that I really enjoy, I get a really good throw back vibe from the arcadey flight sim gameplay, specifically the mission objectives.  I am not sure how I feel about some of the wonkiness of the visuals... but it is just a demo.  I'm still looking forward to it.
#48 Posted by TripMasterMunky (2403 posts) -

Demo did not sell me at all. Don't know if it's a mediocre game or a mediocre demo or both. Don't care as much for the cartoon-y art style either.

#49 Posted by Impossibilium (684 posts) -

this now looks like a Shadow Complex 3D sequel.

It didn't before.

#50 Posted by Geno (6477 posts) -

Didn't this get licensed as a movie too or something? Wtf?
