Back at GamesCom, onelastcontinue.com had a chance to sit down with  Wes Yanagi of Sony Online Entertainment in order to take a closer look at the upcoming Cross-Platform MMO DC Universe Online. When it came to the part where they talked about how the pricing for this game will be handled the article had this to say.

"Most importantly, we made sure to check in and see whether or not the title will be subscription-based or free to play like so many seem to be doing lately.  In his response we were given a very strong impression that they are leaning towards the expansion-pack business model, as opposed to the traditional subscription fee although such matters hadn’t been solidified at that point over at Sony Online Entertainment...   Whilst this is all well and good, Yanagi neglected to further elaborate on the means through which the game will be making its money.  Whether it ends up with a Free Realms-esque microtransaction service or a more Guild Wars-inspired system of free play supported by numerous paid expansions."

Now this is not set in stone but it seems the guys over at SOE are at least looking at that possibility. whether anything will come of it is really anyone's guess and only time will tell.

The article also had a few other very interesting details on the game like:

  • The combat for this game was design from the start to be a faster pace, action-style of God of War instead of WOW's grind-heavy hotkey system.
  • On the PS3 version you'll have the option to map buttons to either the DualShock 3 controller or a plugged-in USB Keyboard and Mouse.
  • The game will have a platform-open servers which means that cross game between the PS3 and PC versions will be possible.
  • Once you prover your worth, you will be ale to become an honored member of the Justice League or the Legion of Doom.

With all these features, and more, it looks like SOE are hard at work to ensure that this game will be up to the standards of every comic book fan. Personally I feel that DC Universe Online has all the making of a sleeper hit. For the full article just go here.

Online Now

I've been looking forward to DCU Online, but I don't own a Playstation 3 to play it on.  If it is subscription free I will totally pick it up since the PS3's new price drop.

I think it's a strong possibly. SOE wouldn't have mention that to a gaming web site  unless they are seriously looking into making the subscription free.

Guild Wars: Prophecies was released in 2005, almost five years ago, and in that time there has been three full retail expansions released for players to enjoy. Each expansion bringing with it significantly more content for the community to play through, each new expansion adding substantial content that was worth the money it cost to purchase. And each expansion came out in a relatively good time period too, less than a year between each expansion's release. Add onto that dedicated patching, ingame celebrations and events etc and you have yourself a really good free-to-play online only game. One with oodles of skills, classes, explorable environments and a PvP system that puts shame on almost every other.

A game that in the almost five years since launch has still retained a substantial, dedicated community that actively continues to play and enjoy the game. Not to mention we'll now see Guild Wars 2 releasing at some point in the future as well. So clearly ArenaNet have made substantial financial success out of Guild Wars to keep it operating for this long, and to allow them to afford creating a sequel. Proof that free-to-play MMOs, if done right, can be both a financial and critical success for a company and the players.

So my point here is this. If a free-to-play game like Guild Wars can still be going strong after almost five years, and in those five years managed to pump out three expansions less than a year apart from each other, then surely SOE can do the same with DCU: Online.

It just seems too many MMO developers and publishers these days are dead set on being the next WoW. Except the problem with that is Blizzard have that corner covered, they've got their 11.5 million subscribers, they have the money, time and interest invested by their players with a firm grip. Chances of another MMO stealing them away is rather low. So try and fill another gap in the online only game market, make a good free-to-play game and you'll get everyone's interest.
