Disappointment over Dead Island
Original entry: I remember watching the amazing Dead Rising trailer back in February and getting really excited about the game. It had mostly fallen off my radar until I started poking around in Steam, and WOW does that game look stupid. The characters in the newest gameplay trailers have that half-animated action figure look, and Deep Silver hired bad actors to speak the boring dialog they wrote. I don't think there's much hype surrounding this game, but it sure looks like it's going to be terrible.

that first CGI trailer was fucking amazing
Agreed, but I'm kind of pessimistic about how the game is going to turn out. I sure hope it's good though. I enjoy when games are good when I didn't think they would be.
I guess they set people up for disappointment by having such an amazing trailer.
Maybe what they should have done is made the initial trailer related to the game in some way, then released the CG trailer later on.
I've seen plenty of hype for this game. Xbox Live is plastered with advertisements for it.
As for the game, it'll be decent. Tons of bugs, boring story, and wonky combat are the complaints you'll hear when the reviews pour in.

Another post about this game and how they already know how it will turn out. Wait till the game comes out before you rant and rave about how bad or good it is. CG trailer has nothing to do with how the game will be. Trailers so far are most likely beta gameplay and not finished game. Stop bitching about something thats not out. KTHXBYE, No more Posts about this plz.

No that's OK, we're big boys, we know when assumptions and conclusions make senseMaybe you should wait and play it first before jumping to conclusions
I approve of the conclusions of this thread, and I think Dead Island is going to be a train wreck.
The "wait until the game comes out" argument is absurd. When games are on the fence, yes, you should wait until they are released to judge them. Sometimes, though, a game just looks awesome in gameplay footage, and that turns out to be the case (Left 4 Dead, Gears of War). Sometimes it looks like a turd and turns out to be a turd. I can't say with 100% certainty because, yeah, Stainless COULD patch all their animation problems together. They COULD record new dialog with interesting characters. The combat COULD seem less clumsy in the final release. I'll gladly eat my words, but I don't think Dead Island will give me a reason to do so. What's more, you're just being a contrarian. You know it looks like shit in the trailers, too. I admire your wait and see approach, but there's a gap between being open-minded and claiming not to see what's in front of your face simply so you can adopt a morally superior tone. Whatever else, the trailer gave my heart a boner, and the in-game footage looks like it's from a game I'd never play. That disparity makes me wonder whether Peter Molyneux had something to do with Dead Island. It's not the first time I've been disappointed by a game trailer--the mini-movie was from a different production house, to boot!-- but it looks like I'll have to wait a little longer before someone releases my Left 4 Dead With a Soul game.
the first trailer wasn't that good + people continued to cum in their pants anyway = disappointment and low expectations
@ImpureAscetic: I completely agree. My problem isn't to really to do with technical issues, whether the game looks as good as the original trailer, or how good the animation is, but that the tone of the trailer is nowhere to be found in any gameplay videos. The game was made out to be really dramatic and personal, whilst the gameplay videos show a game that looks like a first-person Dead Rising, which I wouldn't be too adverse to but it doesn't look as batshit as Dead Rising does. Without that off-the-wall quality, it just becomes every single other piece of zombie media, and I couldn't be less interested.
@ImpureAscetic: To each is own. After this preview I was sold and have my copy preordered at least. We'll see if it's any good, but I gladly sink £40 from what I saw in the preview.
Meh, zombies having their heads smashed in with various objects and doing to with 3 friends. I'm sure I'll have some fun. Need some good co-op till Gears 3.
I hear people say this a lot and while I understand the sentiment, it's your own fault for being disappointed in a game based on a single trailer and then claim it'll be bad when it's not even out yet. CGi trailers are rarely indicative of the actual tone of the game. Look at the Gears of War trailers - while perhaps they hit a bit closer to the source material, the games are hardly ever as somber as the Mad World trailer would suggest. Even Halo had some amazing CGI trailers but when you play the game it's never really evoked the same feelings.
They've always been very clear about what kind of game Dead Island would be. I'm looking forward to it quite a bit. And honestly, even if the trailer wasn't directly tied into the gameplay, it got people talking about the game and certainly generated more exposure so good for them.
If anyone thought the game would be like that first trailer they were kidding themselves. I said it then, I'll say it now.

The game is going to be first person Dead Rising, including stupid weapon combinations to boot (electric wrench, anyone?). I'm not trying to bash the game, stupid has it's place, I know I prefer the older, stupid GTA's to the current line-up (which is also why I am harder than diamonds for SR3).
@Meowshi said:More so than "guy shoots other guys". You have to admit violence against children is rarely explored in any sort of video game product, and I really thought the fact that it was running backwards was awesome! It was also really, really pretty.@Toms115 said:slow motion and sad piano = instant artistic merit, apparently.the first trailer wasn't that good + people continued to cum in their pants anyway = disappointment and low expectationsThe first trailers is one of the most amazing video game cinematics ever. Don't feed the troll, i.e. @Toms115.
Legions of people have been anticipating this game largely based on that trailer.
They have been holding out hope against the sub-par game footage on the strength of that trailer.
Something about it resonated on the same level as the Gears of War "Mad World" trailer for a lot of people. Clearly @Toms115 didn't agree with them/us, or maybe he did at one point but shrugged away any excitement when he noticed the seeping tide of hype and didn't want to be caught in it. Because this is the Internet he has to say the trailer is de facto overrated (as if there were any objective standard) and belittle its particulars so he can malign the people for whom it did work, even though the truth is that its aesthetics just didn't work for him.
It's the same story over and over. There's always a new crop of kids who let themselves get hyped up over some marketing materials and then are disappointed when the actual game doesn't live up to the expectations that have been snowballing in their head. Everyone learns to temper their expectations eventually.
