I picked Xian cause my other friend got Sam B already. I would have gone with the other dude but he comes off as such a douche bag.

After a zombie virus sweeps across a beautiful island resort, survivors must fight their way to freedom while trying to find out exactly what went down in this open-world first-person action game.
Your preferred Dead Island character? (poll)
Purna to start. Plus her background was the most interesting, beside Sam B. Hopefully I will eventually play as all of em.
Love both Logan and Sam B. I voted Logan.
Logan's the Jack of all Trades and Sam B's the Tank! I've always thought Blunt weapons were better against Zombies than Bladed weapons.
I have started a game as Xian, but truthfully, I'm not really a fan of her. Sharp weapons seem somewhat difficult to find, at least in the beginning act and they break down super quickly. Also, they are really, really close range.
I may go Sam B just because I want to stick with melee for most of the game and he seems like the most practical character (especially given the way the game controls).
logan is misrepresented as a throwing weapons guy as thats just his fury, from what i know he's the jack of all trades master of none and has no weaknesses
also he is a massive dickhead and thats why he's the best character
I went with Xian. I love slicing zombie limbs off. After I saw that Sam B has a regenerating health option in his talent tree... I decided that I'm going with him next round.

yeah, but when you find a good one they hit HARD. like I have this strong sugar cane knife, fully upgraded, it pretty much one shots normal zombies and slices the limbs off of thugs in one hit.
@Laketown: Yea, I played for a while tonight, still went with Xian, and now I have a sweet sickle. It's so satisfying to slice an arm off and then follow it up with a full cranial removal.
I wouldn't worry about it, if it's just the weapons putting you off. Towards the end of the first act and on it isn't (or shouldn't be) an issue, and w/ her durability combat skill they last long enough. I have more machetes and axes than I know what to do with; still waiting on a good sword though :(I have started a game as Xian, but truthfully, I'm not really a fan of her. xian mei because like everyone's been saying bladed weapons are easy to find and with her "sharp weapon durability" perk it really helps. plus swords are awesome even if you get them at a early level.
I wanted the bladed weapons specialty but I just couldn't stand seeing my little skinny shadow, seeing my stupid little high heeled tiny pointy toed foot kick all the time, and hearing myself throw out girlie voice comments about everything. Honestly, the deal breaker was the shoe - I would have played Xian if she was wearing jeans and tennis shoes or boots or something, but I'm not slaying zombies in a mini skirt and heels - pretty lame attire for a "martial artist", she should have changed clothes after the zombie attack.
Logan is so cliche, I couldn't even play the game if he was the only playable character. Same kind of annoying baditude character that ruined games like Infamous and Dirt 2 for me.
Purna just doesn't have an interesting specialty so I really haven't even looked at how her character is developed.
So, it's Sam B. all the way. Blunt weapons is the second most interesting skill set, and he's a suitably comical character to fit the gameplay with a nice zombie killing voice. I still wish I could be Sam B. with the bladed weapons skill set though. I haven't had some good dismembering fun since Postal 2 and it looks like I'm not going to get much of it here now either, just some satisfying zombie head crushing.
I think Sam B is the best character stats wise (not to mention he probably has the easiest start), so that's who I would pick as the "preferred" character. However, my favorite is probably Xian since well, electric katanas are pretty awesome.
Sammy muthafuckin' B! I picked him for practical reasons, as I figured blunt weapons would be the most common, and thankfully I was correct. I also found the combo of blunt preference and rap to be giggle-inducing, so that added to the choice. Due to idiocy I didn't even notice he had the option of regenerating health until like 10 hours into my playthrough, but I didn't really need it anyway as I've only died twice at about 35% of the way through the main story. Love the dude's backstory and his overall demeanor, and breaking the arms of zombies is awesome and gross. Thugs with their floppy broken arms reminiscent of a skateboarding injury trying to slap you with it is hilarious
I have a question for people play Xian: Does she get better? These sharp weapons are breaking REALLY quickly. Also, if something breaks (that I haven't upgraded and is just a normal weapon) is it better to just drop it or drop the blunt weapons first?
I'm probably gonna go with the sharp weapons chick if I pick it up, but I'll look a bit more into the other characters first.
went with xian mei, really happy with my choice and only up to level 11 i think. the durability and stamina upgrades from the combat tree seem to be making a difference, and i'm finding some great weapons.
at first i wished i had gone with sam b because like every single weapon was blunt and all i had was a little stabby knife, but now i've got big ol machetes and can take heads and limbs off with ease.
edit: she almost seems TOO easy sometimes, with her execution stomp, you don't even need to use a weapon really, just kick them to the ground and stomp on their head.
Was playing Logan and getting frustrated about the combat mechanics. Then I discovered that almost all weapons are throwing weapons and now I couldn't be happier about my choice. No more fucking around in melee with Infected trashing you down or running through you. Haven't engaged a single zombie in melee since I started playing correctly and my enjoyment of the game skyrocketed.

He's not misrepresented at all, get max Boomerang and you'll realize how freaking awesome throwing is :Plogan is misrepresented as a throwing weapons guy as thats just his fury, from what i know he's the jack of all trades master of none and has no weaknesses

I'm playing Logan with nothing but zap/toxic machetes and alcohol. Throwing a machete and seeing a thug burst with lightning is so great along with the machete automatically coming BACK.
Sam B seems like easy mode and my bro is playing as him. Xian is a cool assassin class, but it's too weird seeing a red heel kicking back zombies. Purna isn't really good unless you'r playing Coop.

WHO DO YOU VOODOO BITCH.
No seriously Sam B is the best character.
Came here to post this, good job on taking care of it already!
I like Xian, the slicing is a lot of fun. But Sam B's got a lot of good skills, and blunt melee weapons are incredible easy to find everywhere. I'm really tempted to try Logan cause throwing my weapons is a lot of fun, and it'd be weird to focus on that. Guns seem boring as hell, so I'm gonna skip Purna.
i'll go with xian... got an epic axe for her which i modded with phoenix... crit on a thug -> instant dead... her downside is the low health, but damage wise shes like omgwtfbbq... tried logan, cause i liked the 'throwing weapons' concept... but until you max out boomerang hes just a pain in the ass to play with... also, you tend to loose weapons when you throw them, sometimes they just disappear, or half-clip through the ground makin it impossible to pick them up again... sucks if it was acutally a weapon you cared for :F
