So I may have...(totally did) get overanxious and bought a standard copy of DOA 5 even though I have a CE coming in the mail...(because I'm ridiculous and yes I know this) and I can confirm... Jeff's reaction on the bombcast was totally justified. Cause hooooly shit. I don't wanna post spoilers but man. Even if you don't buy this you should rent it or borrow it for a weekend and play through the story mode. Its a fucking treat.

How is story mode structured? Mortal Kombat style? Persona 4 Arena style? Something else?

#3 Posted by mrfluke (3174 posts) - 7 months, 23 days ago

my copy is coming in wednesday, but peeking at the story mode cut scenes on you tube. yea it seems deliberately ridiculous in a way that i can get behind.

#4 Posted by mrfluke (3174 posts) - 7 months, 23 days ago

@Hailinel:its structured like MK, but not as slick. but it has a structure like MK

#5 Posted by familyphotoshoot (626 posts) - 7 months, 23 days ago

How are the tit physics?

#6 Posted by dungbootle (2247 posts) - 7 months, 23 days ago

Jeff seems antsy to get a QL out there, so I guess I'll see it then.

#7 Posted by Demoskinos (8922 posts) - 7 months, 23 days ago

@Hailinel: Its "kind" of structured like Mortal Kombat it does flow from the cut scenes to the fights but it has this "timeline" that it slowly fills in with different events so all the chapters are usually centered around a specific character (at least so far) for example I just finished playing as Mila then it went through all of the cut-scenes/fights in that chapter then when that chapter was done went back to the "timeline" screen where Tina's chapter was unlocked so you can go back and play segments of story mode.

#8 Posted by Barrock (3182 posts) - 7 months, 23 days ago

You really like DOA don't you?

#9 Posted by Demoskinos (8922 posts) - 7 months, 23 days ago

@Barrock: And Ninja Gaiden. Never really been shy that I'm a total mark for pretty much anything they make.

#10 Posted by JJOR64 (18111 posts) - 7 months, 23 days ago

Does this game have DLC gems? Does this game have X-Factor?

Real question though, how is the online play netcode wise?

#11 Edited by mrfluke (3174 posts) - 7 months, 23 days ago

@Demoskinos: yea thats what i mean by having a structure like MK,

(without spoilers of course), you enjoying the ridiculousness of that story mode? i peeked at a bit of kokoros story mode and bit of scenes with brad wong and elliot and it definitely has my interested to play it through cause that stuff was just so stupid i liked it

God damn it I NEED TO KNOW.

#14 Posted by Demoskinos (8922 posts) - 7 months, 23 days ago

@mrfluke: The Kokoro stuff was fantastic.

@familyphotoshoot: Fap-tastic?

#18 Posted by Hunter5024 (2680 posts) - 7 months, 23 days ago

Is it more ridiculous than this?

#19 Posted by Demoskinos (8922 posts) - 7 months, 23 days ago

@Hunter5024: Its not quite up to that but there are some scenes that are downright hilarious that is for sure.

#20 Posted by GoofyGoober (936 posts) - 7 months, 23 days ago

I had no idea that this game was even being release this week.

#21 Posted by Demoskinos (8922 posts) - 7 months, 23 days ago

Okay Its 6:30am and I just beat the damn story mode. HOLY FUCK. Stay tuned after the credits. Seriously. I say bravo because they actually managed to make the DOA lore actually fun and sorta meaningful. Everything "makes sense" in the end they just tell the story out of chronological order a lot. Anyways, I'm going to sleep now.

#22 Edited by Hunter5024 (2680 posts) - 7 months, 23 days ago

So is this the kind of story mode that I need to be invested in the other games in the franchise to appreciate? Because I know approximately nothing about Dead or Alive's fiction, and the idea of playing through DOA Dimensions before this, after already playing through 3 fighting games this year, sounds totally unappealing to me, but this game looks really rad.

#23 Posted by TrafalgarLaw (322 posts) - 7 months, 22 days ago

All you need to know about DoA is that they're fighting for prize money to afford the breast reduction surgery.

#24 Posted by DonChipotle (2151 posts) - 7 months, 22 days ago

My copy should be arriving today. I like a crazy story mode in fighting games so this is great.

#25 Posted by Vanek (347 posts) - 7 months, 22 days ago

I'm not that much of an online guy so a decent single player mode is exactly what I want. The game isn't out in the UK till Friday, so I'll probably order it once I see the QL and make sure everything is fine. I'm on 360 and some people claiming to have early copies are saying the Xbox 360 version has some problems compared to the PS3 version which if true is a shame. It's probably not true, but I want to make sure before I order it. So, in summary:

What version did you get? If you got an Xbox 360 copy have you noticed any performance issues/problems and have you tried the online?

#26 Posted by GunstarRed (4015 posts) - 7 months, 22 days ago

I've played a bit and it's pretty bizarre (the right kind) It isn't Bayonetta/Asura's Wrath crazy, but there is a whole ton of weirdness going on. It's probably partly because it all feels disjointed, like snippets of story. I think the characters look pretty lovely and there's been a ton of insane boob-bounce and inappropriate clothing choices for the weather conditions they are fighting in.

#27 Edited by AhmadMetallic (18957 posts) - 7 months, 22 days ago

I'm trying to imagine a scenario where "story mode" can be any different from a '"quick match" mode in a game where the only available gameplay is fighting sideways (with tons of awesome moves and animations of course), and I fail to do that. I mean, it's a fighting game, you tap the buttons to string together combos of kickass punches and kicks, so can you explain why story mode is amazing? Do you get to do anything other than fight til you K.O.?

Edit: Oh it's just the lore being great? Ok.

#28 Posted by mrfluke (3174 posts) - 7 months, 22 days ago

@GunstarRed: just that scene where jann lee throws the nunchucks for kokoro, just the most deliberately stupidiest thing XD

#29 Posted by msavo (7252 posts) - 7 months, 22 days ago

Is it of sub-par anime quality? That's all I really want from my DOA.

#30 Posted by mrfluke (3174 posts) - 7 months, 22 days ago

@Demoskinos: so how is the fight against alpha 152? (not really a spoiler since she is in the opening declaration trailer) is it still a monster of a cheap fight or no?

#31 Posted by Demoskinos (8922 posts) - 7 months, 22 days ago

@mrfluke: Alpha seemed toned down to me TBH much more manageable. Many of her moves like her grabs which used to do quite literally half a health bar of damage have been toned down. She seems like she teleports far less often too.

#32 Posted by Nottle (1879 posts) - 7 months, 22 days ago

What if I never played a DOA game before? Will it still be good?

#33 Posted by mrfluke (3174 posts) - 7 months, 22 days ago

@Demoskinos: thank god, talk about a boss killing replaybility for me on Doa 4 (dont really mess around online much)

how long it take you to beat the story mode? early reviews pegged it for around 3-5 hours. (its not a dealbreaker for me, already ordered my copy)

#34 Posted by Demoskinos (8922 posts) - 7 months, 22 days ago

@mrfluke: About that yeah. I replayed some of the fights multiple times though to try to get the bonus missions complete so I might have had a shorter time if not for that.

#35 Posted by Demoskinos (8922 posts) - 7 months, 22 days ago

Figured I'd post this here to avoid creating yet another topic. My CE just came and HOLY SHIT THIS THING IS HUGE.

Also this was in the case which i laughed pretty hard at....Kasumi is FULLY XXXPOSED YOU GUYS!

It's just silly cutscenes in between the fights.

#37 Posted by I_Stay_Puft (1033 posts) - 7 months, 22 days ago

@Demoskinos: Did the CE come with anything else or was that it. Also what were the price difference?

#38 Posted by Demoskinos (8922 posts) - 7 months, 22 days ago

@I_Stay_Puft: The CE came with a Full Size art book with various concept art and renders of the characters. It comes with a soundtrack with the entire OST as well as a poster and a download token for Swimsuits for all the ladies. $80 was the actual retail price although I paid 100$ after shipping since I picked one day shipping.

#39 Posted by I_Stay_Puft (1033 posts) - 7 months, 22 days ago

@Demoskinos: Yikes that's alot of dough, but heck if you're a fan you got to go with the premium stuff. I'll probably grab the game when it gets on the cheap mostly intrigued by the story but I just got to say after playing Ninja Gaiden 3 a little bit and realizing Itagaki wasn't on this game not really sure what to expect. I guess after watching the quick look it looks like Team Ninja is trying to make the games story crazy, which I can respect.

#40 Posted by mpgeist (453 posts) - 7 months, 21 days ago

The story is as asinine as any other DOA. Thankfully this is best playing (and looking) one yet. Really digging this game so far.

#41 Posted by mrfluke (3174 posts) - 7 months, 20 days ago

played through half of the story mode so far, and you know what? i like it id almost say i like it a lot, it really just seems deliberately stupid which makes it a fun ride.

Really hope it sells well

#42 Edited by mrfluke (3174 posts) - 7 months, 20 days ago

finished the story mode, and you know what, its alright.ill even say i like it a lot, its a fun ride, a huge step forward for this franchise for its story.

and i love the tease at the end after the credits . really hope the game sells well. i wanna see doa on next gen systems. the story is so loose enough that they can even continue it with a crossover game with virtua fighter.

#43 Posted by Hailinel (18024 posts) - 7 months, 19 days ago

I just finished the story mode in one sitting. As is the usual, I had to use cheese tactics on the final boss, but hey, fighting games.

But the story was a really fun ride. And despite what others might say, it made perfect sense to me. The only part I didn't like was that Jann Lee won the tournament. That fucking douchebag.

Yeah, I was really pumped for Hitomi to possibly win it but then he won it and.... unless I missed a memo it didn't seem like it mattered AT ALL. Although there was some beef between him and Rig in that one scene but I doubt that really wasn't anything than a bar room brawl getting picked.

There were a lot of just really funny and enjoyable scenes. The scene between Christie and Eliot cracked me up as did pretty much every scene Kokoro was in.

#45 Posted by Hailinel (18024 posts) - 7 months, 19 days ago

@Demoskinos:I'm pretty sure it didn't.

But yeah, that scene between Eliot and Christie gave me a good laugh, as did a number of the moments with Kokoro (random Akira Yuki entrance!).

Won't be able to play this for a while so this is killing me!

#47 Posted by Dany (7877 posts) - 7 months, 18 days ago

All the story stuff when you're not a ninja is quite terribly hokey. It is like there is a split between the story between the fluff in the middle and the REAL story. Beyond that its very funny, unintentionally so sometimes. Especially with English voice actors.

I think part of that is that, outside the ninja characters, almost none of the other characters have any real importance to the main narrative, or are at best have only fleeting relevance. But they felt that something needed to be done with them anyway, so we have Lei Fang and Hitomi training in a circus and Bass and Tina continuing to...be themselves.

After hearing Jeff's thoughts I'm super excited.
