So, one of the biggest things I've been excited about is how much better all the character models look for this DOA 5. They have more of a realistic bent to them rather than all looking like anime real dolls which is great. Each character especially the girls have distinctive faces and jawlines now. Just look at this comparison of Helena...

I mean... she actually has facial structure now and her hair looks like.... hair. Really hoping this game does well as its up against Tekken Tag Tourney 2 in September. It seems that even though Ninja Gaiden 3 was a bit of a blunder that they have put some real work into this. Even the alpha demo I played was extremely polished looking for was was supposedly an alpha build of the game.

@McGhee: They've added some fun stuff in this one. Including a online training mode where you can just dick around with someone which unless another game that i don't know about did it might be the first game to do that. It also has training options to simulate lag in the offline training room so you can learn to compensate and adjust when playing online. I'm really excited for the changes they've made they actually took a ton of feedback from the alpha demo players and incorporated it into the game. Looks like its going to be a fun time.

The updated character models are really a case of night and day. After playing a lot of Dead or Alive: Dimensions last year, it's really stunning to see the characters with such improved facial features in DOA5.

Wow looking at the difference from the earlier parts of this generation to now really is quite impressive. If only the story in these games were less confusing and stupid I might be a little more interested in them. Still, I may pick up this game anyways.

Yes certainly significant efforts seem to have been made toward a more photorealistic style through more detailed textures.

I've never been ashamed of enjoying videogames, but there's a limit and DOA is it. If it's still a fun game then put those mechanics in a wrapper that isn't so pandering.

Also I agree with your thoughts that the models are way better now and I might consider giving DOA5 a go. I liked the gameplay of DOA3 and am very interested to see more of this new game.

Oh, and when I first played Dead or Alive when I was younger, I didn't think so much about the sexual aspect of it, but now... Tits. I mean, come on. It's crazy. Although I'm not exactly interested in these kinds of game that much anymore, I will say that they were fun for a time, and probably still are.

Steering this topic back from the detour..... the newest episode of Fighter Chronicles has also dropped where they actually mention the character redesigns. Pretty cool stuff.

Both Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and Dead or Alive 5 look really fun but the insane 50+ character roster in Tag 2 is kinda driving me away from it while the smaller roster of DOA5 gives me the impression that they're making their characters distinctively enough.

Indeed. I can't see how they are going to balance everything in that game much less like you said make everyone feel distinct enough. Funny thing about DOA 5 though its almost all but been confirmed that Leon is not making it on the roster this time around. He was of course pretty much a Bayman clone and I think that is why they axed him.

No... Tekken has been iterating over 18 years now, the characters are all more distinct now that ever, that being said there are a few characters with only minor or cosmetic differences included in that count, i.e. Eddy/Christie, Kuma/Panda, Jaycee/Michelle, Roger Jr/ Alex... Tekken is going to come out the more balanced and refined fighter without a doubt, I'll try DOA as well but it's kind of a reboot.

Tekken Tag 2 has been out in Japanese and Korean arcades for a while now, the arcade machines are all connected to Namco servers, and they have already gone through a major revision. DOA on the other hand has not been playtested by any kind of community so there will likely be a few exploits that may or may not ever be fixed

Actually you are wrong about DOA. They've been constantly having pro-DOA players play the game and give feedback. They also took a ton of feedback from the player survey for those who played the alpha demo. They have made major revisions to the game since the early stages retooling entire systems and adding other entirely new systems like critical bursts.

I've always been a fan of Virtua Fighter 5's character models, personally. They're getting better, but she looks like she still suffers from lack of detail and nuance in the body, going by other screenshots. Everything else looks pretty good, though.

It looks good. I actualy think she looks sexier now that she looks more realistic. Im not to into fighting games, although I did buy DOA: Dimensions for my 3ds.

Its a probable notion. If you watched the video I posted the mention how they wanted to take the series in a more mature direction. The fan service is still there but its more down played this time around for a more realistic tone. That in turn means the girls now all have different proportions and fairly more realistic proportions.

True. However Gen-Fu's storyline wrapped up in DOA 3 and he still ended up being playable in 4 and if the latest trailer is to be believed he will be in 5 as well although of course hasn't been confirmed as playable yet.

I didn't say it wasn't there. And from all the costumes I've seen in game most of them are fairly more conservative in nature. The Bikini costumes all require to you to either pre-order or get the collectors edition at that point your basically seeking out the fan service so you can't really complain.

There's always going to be the crowd that's more into DOA for the bikini volleyball absurdity more than the fighting or any attempt that Team Ninja might make to tone things down. That's just the way things are, and it doesn't surprise me that they'd throw that crowd a bone.
